Alip Ba Ta (Alif Gustakhiyat) is pure hidden gem. No one knows him before until he posted his rare gift on guitar playing on Facebook, then a friend suggested him to have special channel on TH-cam. What was happened then he exploded the world music with his phenomenal performance. By today his subscriber is almost 5 million, even though he never ever asks people to subscribe his channel. We thank to Alip (and millions of his followers) as well because he introduces our country (Indonesia) more to the world through his performance. Alip himself is still a humble young man, just like before. Many big labels and big names offer him to make collaboration or professional recording, but so far he refuses (something that people think it is crazy). Alif just want to be himself, enjoying simple life with his little family, playing music for fun to make people happy. Just that simple!

In my opinion when looking at Alip Ba Ta, we need to first understand his Javanese background-Alip grew up with strong Javanese culture, which includes a variety of musical traditions such as gambang-suling, gamelan, etc. Particularly in his hometown, Ponorogo in East Java, there is a popular musical dance known as “Reog Ponorogo”-it can be said his exposure and practice of art and music started since a very young age (although we don’t know exactly when he started playing guitar?) Alip Ba Ta’s exposure to Western music helped honed his musical sense, being able to put a soul into everything that he plays. Not only that, his participation with Western music also enriched and improved his musical skills, especially within his guitar playing ability without forgetting his Javanese roots.
