The analogy that healed my heart regarding tithing was this: If your neighbor lends you his lawn mower, then he is trusting you to bring it back. When you return it, you're not GIVING to your neighbor. It's already his, and he's asking you to BRING it back. That's what I think of when I read Malachi 3. God is saying to BRING (back) what is His. You can never GIVE what was never yours. It's not a transaction of giving so you can receive blessings. It's a trusting relationship. And what an overwhelming honor it is to be entrusted with God's portion and to be enabled to carry that back to His house!
