Spud Webb was my favorite player as a kid. The best player under 6'0 to ever play the game!
+jeremypepper You could argue he's one the most relateable players in NBA history given that he was 5'7" which is between average height for a woman (5'4") and a man (5'9") in the U.S. He's one of those pro athletes you could talk to and be eye level and he won't feel like giant like with Shaquille O'Neal or Michael Jordan (both of whom are over 6' tall). He also proved that dunking has more to do with fitness than height. If you have strong enough muscles in your legs you can reach the rim.

Man I remember seeing this as a kid.
Spud Webb was a hero to all of us who were never tall enough to dunk with ease.
I remember when I was about 15 yrs old at about 5'7" tall, I was so obsessed with dunking. I used to wear ankle weights, I used to do squats and all other types of exercises to increase my vertical leap.I finally accomplished it, I went from a 20 inch vertical leap to a 40 inch vertical leap but I got a torn acl afterwards. After watching this dunk contest Spudd Webb inspired me to dunk as well as he did/does. It still amazes me to this day how he was/is able to do jump so high.

25 years ago today...and I was in the house for it! I might still have the t-shirt.
I met Spud when he was playing for NC State at the airport in Louisville. I'm 5-7, he ISN'T 5-7, he was a wee bit shorter than I. He was a very nice guy too. I knew then, in 1985, that he would put his mark on PRO ball history. Never had a doubt in my mind. I miss seeing him pick up the pace of a game.

I remember reading a SI article on Webb when he was still in college. His coach used to have him guard players that were up to 6'6" and they would laugh to themselves until he swatted their shot.
He put on the best show of any of these guys, especially considering his height.

OMG lol awsome - the 86 d-comp was 10 years ahead of it's time with 360s and over-the-person- standing-there dunks! We didnt see any of that til Miner and JR Rider. BTW Gerald Wilkins kicks! Hey, Even Jordan never did a 360 or between the legs dunk.
My favorite dunk was actually the Statue of Liberty 360 dunk, even though the man had done it before.

spud webb's head is getting over the bottom of the backboard which is 9' 6'' which makes his vertical about 50 inches, give or take 1 or 2 inches
Spud deserved to win. I used to think Nique was robbed, but Spud put on a show. Nique needed one more creative dunk in the arsenal. He lost out the same way in '88 on the same type of dunk.

@K33nBarrie Ermm...you couldn't be anymore wrong. Guys like Michael Jordan, Nique, Erwing, Bird etc. are just as good as the the NBA players now like Dwight Howard, Kobe, Wade, Durant, Rose etc.
Trust me, if you were around in the 80s watching basketball, guys like Spudd, D. Wilkins and MJ were just magic to watch, and they still are!
