    There are a number of things that will slow down the cb. A worn cloth, lack of grip on the tip, follow through on the shot, etc. The thing slowing down my cb speed in some of these shots is dirt. The table could be cleaner, and the cue ball could be cleaner. I put in a ton of reps on this table but do not clean it every day. The cloth is top of the line Simonis 860HR and is only 6 months old. And the cue ball has not been cleaned in months. Not good maintenance on my part. Thanks for watching.

    Excellent video. "Stay down until ball in pocket," "use level, not jacked up, cue," shape of tip, follow through. Thanks so much. Some people make the draw shot look so easy, but a lot of simple (but not easy?) factors go into it.

    Finally, someone who understands the difference between shoulder drop and elbow drop. There is absolutely nothing wrong with dropping your elbow a few inches, despite what some of those con-men instructors who can't play a lick say. Shoulder drop is completely different, it can very easily cause your cue to veer off to the side. Good video BTW.

    Bruhhhh, that diagram and his explanation of the dime size tip make so much sense now.
    I use a house cue to break with which is considerably flatter than my playing cues tip. After the break, I forgot to switch out cues and did the longest draw of my life. I assumed it was the heavier weight of the house cue that made the difference when I realized which cue I was playing with.

    The closed bridge thing caught me of guard. As someone who is using almost only the open bridge it is easier to do a long draw shot with it(cue ball 4 to 5 diamonds away from the object ball). I tend to stiffen up and not follow trough enough with the closed bridge.

    • @FXBilliards
      @FXBilliards  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marko Nikolic it helps to have a good smooth shaft with the closed bridge. When I play with house cues , I use more open bridges because the cues are often dirty or too sticky to pass through my bridge. If it’s working for you, stick with it.

    Good tips. Yeah, I don't know WHY a loose grip helps, but it DEFINITELY does. One thing someone told me that helps with a straight stroke is to ensure that the v created by your thumb and index finger finishes at the same point it starts the stroke in, which is directly on top of the stick. Eliminates all the 'chicken winging" crap. I was watching one of our best amateurs one day, and he was not shooting up to par. He is also an instructor. I told him he was cocking his wrist slightly, and he corrected it and instantly started shooting well again. He smiled and said "good call', so you can help people far better than you by knowing good stroke mechanics, sometimes, even if theirs are far better than yours, normally, and telling them with the proper respect and tone, obviously. I just said it matter-of-factly, with an "I think you're bending your wrist a bit" starting the statement.
    Another help was to use a straight line on the table (the line between the cushion and the rail works well, and to bridge the cue directly over that line and stroke with the tip ending on the surface crack directly lined up after the follow through. You can even see if the rest of the stroke is straight with careful observation. If not, have someone (or video) your stroke from directly behind, it can reveal a multitude of stroke problems. It sometimes helps to stroke two or three like this when your mechanics are getting sloppy even during a match, I find.
    And when your shooting suddenly becomes erratic ALWAYS think stroke mechanics, because 9 times out of ten, that is at least part of the problem. The way that was described to me about the light grip is think of DELIVERING the cue stick to the ball, and letting IT do the work. It helped in several areas of shooting. Hope this helps.

    Hey Brian,
    Thanks for all the amazing instructional videos. I still consider myself new to pool. I'm at the Predator World 10 ball in Las Vegas right now. I'm watching the professionals play on pristine tables with beautiful balls rolling so effortlessly. What sort of adjustments should league players expect to make realizing that we're not playing on equipment like theirs?

    • @FXBilliards
      @FXBilliards  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These days a lot of pool halls have the same very high-quality equipment. But keep in mind as a league player you need to adjust to the equipment, - but that’s the same in many sports. Arrive early - get some reps on the equipment - that’s the best you can do. Thanks for watching

    Awesome video Brian. I do have a question however. What cue tip do you recommend? I’m currently using a Kamui Black medium soft. I’m able to draw back to the the rail when the cue ball is positioned on the head string and the object ball is on the foot string on a kitty-corner angle for max distance corner to corner. I’m trying to pull the cue ball directly back into the corner pocket but the cue ball usually trickles in from that distance. I’m wondering if a softer tip would be recommended. I have aerated my cue tip on occasion and I’m using predator chalk. Thank you for any advice. 😊

    I can draw fine when the OB and cueball are 2 or 3 feet from each other, the draw that's very hard to pull off is when the shot is 8 or 9 feet between balls....usually the cueball just dies no matter how much draw I out on it, so I'm just following on those shots to get some position.

    Who hates doing drills? I go to the pool hall with the intention of doing drills.
    I'm absolutely shocked to find out how many players aren't willing to do what it takes to get better. That means drills. That means practicing with purpose. The means shooting that shot you missed in the match over and over in practice. That means adding new shots by practicing them.
    I'm at a loss for words for the amount of players that refuse to do these things.

    I find most people shoot to hard on a draw shot. This is seldom necessary. A softer hit will draw farther with less chance of miscues. Plus it's just pretty as heck. Not unusual to get way more draw than you wanted at first. Follow through and light grip on the cue is super important!

    I know there are three levels of hardness to most tips. Is there a certain level that is best for draw shots or makes no difference. I play with a Moori med Hard . Would like to know your thought on this.

      From what I know...and it makes sense the softer the tip the more spin you can get.
      A softer tip deforms more on impact so that a bigger surface contacts the cueball. That means there's more friction and therefore more spin. I also think that should make a miscue more unlikely.
      I don't think it'll make a huge difference though. When you have good stroke you can get pretty good results with any tip.

      I actually prefer a harder tip, and I find no difficulty in draw shots even with table length shots drawing back table length. There have been studies that show that there is no measurable difference in spin with regards to tip hardness. In fact one could argue that the extra friction, surface area, and time of tip on ball could negatively affect the amount of spin. Then again, I really don't stroke the cue that hard to begin with - actually a lot lighter than the strokes demonstrated in the video - so possibly softness or hardness of tip would depend on softness or firmness of stroke. Tip shape and a straight stroke are far more important.

    Chances are, you are misscueing because your cue stick is not level while you shoot. You may be dropping your shoulder during the shot. If your can, make a short video of your shot and email it to me through our fxbilliards website. We can watch and give you some feedback.
