Linux Internals: PCI and USB

Today I am exploring the tools for PCI and USB. These tools allow us to exam the PCI and USB devices to see if they are working properly and have valid kernel or kernel module drivers. I also talk about how the kernel assigns device numbers to each device and where the tools get their information to display back to us.

One I thing I learned about is the /usr/share/misc/pci.ids files. I thought that it was the cards themselves that were storing the text information and communicating that to lspci.

Thanks DJ for another useful video. Your video should prove very helpful as it comes on the heels of VirtualBox only being able to see USB ports as USB1.1 and being unable to see my scanner. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would share any tips.

Even if they claim to support UAS, it may not always be the case. I have two DeLock USB->SATA with a JMicron (152d:0578) controller where I had to blacklist UAS for that specific controller, because it caused the kernel to continuously reset it back to XHCI and then load it back to UAS which in turn caused the drive to lock up constantly during the switching. They work fine on XHCI, but because they report the support for UAS, they have to be manually configured not to use it.
