I'd ordered and recieved my double Blackstone sample kit two months ago. Brand new car and am establishing a baseline, expecting a long term ownership.
You’re better off doing the analysis around 15-20k miles to get all breakin material out before establishing a baseline. You’re first few changes will have that in the narrative.
Oil samples are a great tool to trend very expensive industrial components. I’ve used it extensively in aviation where you could catch a potential failure that could snowball into a 100k dollar repair bill or take an asset out of service. On an old used car I’m not personally sold on the value.
I believe that’s where the oil analysis thing started was in the aviation industry, then it became more of a thing for cars later. As for the value? 🤷♂️ it’s $30 and if you’re an enthusiast I can see how you would just do it to nerd out.
I've used Blackstone in the past with my 10W-30 Hi Mile Mobil 1. The spec that goes out first is total dissolved solids. If you live in the US, thats not true. If a vehicle came with a cat, regardless of age, it has to remain compliant with the smog controls that were in place at time of manufacture. I just this year had to replace the cat on my 83 Eldorado, so it would pass its smog test, and its 40 years old.

Yes letting a car sit undriven for long periods is bad for many of its parts. Many people believe that it's a good idea to run the engine for a few minutes every couple months but this is also not a good idea. Much better to run it for 20+ minutes (being driven, preferably) so that the engine AND THE OIL get nice and hot. It's almost better not to run it at all if you aren't going to let it get fully hot. You really only need to prefilled diesel oil filters because of their size and they are more likely to get air in there which is definitely a bad thing for an oil supply
Interesting you mention using oil from cap to lube gasket as if you're trying to get as much oil for the container as possible. But then after you pour oil in the filter you wipe off the excess with a paper towel. So throwing away some of the oil.
You are using good oil, i use Castrol. Cheaper than mobil 1. But why not use a good filter like k&n. Wix is the worst filter you can buy. This would help to. Not all filters are the same either. I would look it up on TH-cam, i did. I used fram for many years and now changed to k&n.
I agree with filter pre fill some say possible contamination but pouring oil into the engine is possible contamination plus very few oil filter manufacturers don't plastic seal the filter air borne contamination in an unsealed box is far more than pouring oil into the filter.
Flaw in your logic is this. Pouring oil into the filter you can add contamination that is on the wrong side of the filter and from there goes straight to the main bearings. Even manufacturers say to not prefill the filter and there's no reason to do so. The very short time that it takes to fill the filter and hit the bearings is less time than it takes for cold oil to circulate on start up and being that you should never do an oil change on a cold engine that wasn't just running the bearings still have oil in them and won't be dry. As a shop owner and technician myself I've seen the results of prefilled oil filters and it is not pretty. Do what you do at your own risks but I don't advise it.

@@brucek.hoffman5868 your comparison isn't straight up. Your comparison is like saying a brain surgeon hasn't ever caused any problems with brain removal and then saying the average person would not cause problems. As a technician and shop owner I have to make sure that any advice I give is sound. Thats a standard set by law and it creates the need to base any advice on the principle that most people know nothing about the subject matter and that as the person who has the knowledge to offer such advice that the average person is not going to use that advice and to easily cause damage. So no most people should not be prefilling oil filters. Most aren't in an environment that is able to provide enough protection from foreign material to enter the filter. The average diy person is laying in a dirt driveway on the ground with minimal amount of lift for the vehicle and limited line of sight. They are most likely going to knock the oil filter against other things that have lots of dirt ect on them or drop ect. Some vehicles the filter is in a horrible location and even with every ability a shop has its hard to prevent the introduction of foreign material into them. Though the final part of my response to your statement is im concerned with the simple claim that your buddy as a technician is saying that he's never seen an engine fail from foreign material introduction. Thats very very concerning because most engine damage is due to some kind of foreign material wether it be sludge water debris ect. Theres no definite way to claim that something was introduced in the system via the oil filter. Its based of an educated guess. Finding dirt in an engine bearing on a well used engine that has just suffered bearing failure its safe to say that it likely came in via the oil filter getting contaminated. Finding dirt in a bearing on a freshly assembled engine thats not going to be the likely thing that occurred. Doesn't mean that it wasn't 100% just most likely. Also the fact that most contamination isn't even necessarily visible or big enough that one can see it. In order for anything to really get into the tight places that live in the bearing clearance area to cause damage it has to be very very tiny. So im going to be more concerned about anything that's liquid or that could cause a chemical problem than any other type of contamination. Things like salt water from the roads dripping down things of that nature. How can I make the statement that I have seen the damage done from contamination introduction from a filter? When you find rust in an engine thats been running recently there's no way for that to happen where the oil is in contact with the metal unless there was something that got into the oil such as salt thats corrosive and the most likely place for that to occur would be the oil filter as most are on the bottom of the engine and easy to have a chunk of slushy salty stuff dripping and potentially enter the filter.
Would the very fine particles caught by the magnet not have been held in suspension by the oil and removed by the oil change ? I've yet to see a video by anyone to demonstrate or debunk the magnet claim.

At every 3000 mile oil change I use prolong engine treatment. The absolute best in preventing dry start ups. I've been using it for a long time and my engine has never sounded and ran smoother. Tons of research out there. They have a transmission and fuel additive too.
Be careful. I know for a fact that Prolong works, but it comes with a price... If your vehicle is driven at least 15 miles per day, then you're good. But if it a short tripped vehicle - then Prolong may be doing more harm than good. In vehicles that get short tripped or sit for long time Prolong causes rust and corrosion on various internal engine components. If a vehicle is a "garage queen", then bearings are usually the first to go from Prolong.
@@SanProsan1993 Really... Where did you hear that? I can't say I've ever heard of a additive like prolong rusting any metal internals... but I'd be interested in seeing were you read or heard that. But.. if true, I drive mine everyday so I GUESS I'm covered.

Interesting you mention using oil from cap to lube gasket as if you're trying to get as much oil for the container as possible. But then after you pour oil in the filter you wipe off the excess with a paper towel. So throwing away some of the oil.
My new Wrangler 392 has 6,000 miles on it and I have already changed the oil three times!
I've never seen in the directions to change oil that you should prefill your filter. Once you start it the oil will instantaneously fill the filter..
Scotty Kilmer doesn't do it.
Are you able to teach short term and long term fuel trims and how to use them both to diagnose vehicles?
@@claytoncoolidge992 a mechanic buddy has bin pre filling filters since b4 he became ASE certified w/11 last time i saw him... learned f/his dad who did also... never lost or had a problem w/an engine... y don't u explain the NOT PRETTY part of pre filling filters... just remembered, a truk mechanic buddy who worked 4 HERTZ TRUKS showed me how 2 do that bak in early '70s, & hav bin doing it ever since... how many probs hav i had ? ? ? ABSOLUTLY NONE, that means 00000000000000000000000000 ur full of it...
40000 Miles is way too long of an interval.
Hey i need help i have a 06 grand prix gxp 5.3 v8 my engine cooling fan dosnt want to turn on i got it a new relay and tested the fans they both work just fine and there is power in the wireing . I just dont know any more please help
can you do a video about service 4wd please
Wow, Jimmy didn't use a AC Delco oil filter? What's the world coming to?
Surely a sign of the coming apocalypse.
Haha! Wix XP is a really good filter.
@@1RoadGarageROAD Is it true that Napa Gold filters are Wix filters? That is what I have heard. I hope so that is because we have a Napa Parts 5 miles from where I live.
@@eyesalooking Napa Gold used to be made by WIX I’m not sure about now, I do know that Napa oil is made by Valvoline but I’m a Mobil 1 & WIX man strictly
I have a 2004 Expedition 4.6 I haven't change the oil almost 2years I use full synthetic, since the pandemic I put 4,000 miles on it but the color of the oil is still clear tan not black like yours, should I change it anyway to be safe?Any comments will be appreciated I have 129,500 miles total now.
Try Amsoil and get a comparison.
Just a thought.
I would switch to a better oil and use a good filter.
Can you post a link for magnet you put on filter?
A low mileage vehicle doesn't mean it has been sitting as it means that they weren't morons driving it everywhere. Probably was their weekend vehicle.
At every 3000 mile oil change I use prolong engine treatment. The absolute best in preventing dry start ups. This stuff conditions oil and literary sticks to the metal engine parts better than ANYTHING on the market. Proven to be the best for years and years. Been around a long time. Check it out.
I’ll look into it. I know I’ve heard of and seen it around. Thanks!
Good to know.
@@SanProsan1993 Really... Where did you hear that? I can't say I've ever heard of a additive like prolong rusting any metal internals... but I'd be interested in seeing were you read or heard that. But.. if true, I drive mine everyday so I GUESS I'm covered.
@@johnwagner4559 If you drive it daily long enough for it to warm up - then you're good. This info came from oil forums such as "bobistheoilguy" and similar. Info was confirmed by tribologist who deals with oils and oil additives on daily basis in the lab.
Why did you throw the oil pan bolt into the old oil? Did you replace the drain bolt with a new one?
Oh my lands!
Well, it's a good idea to "document" inside of your book, of each vehicle. I do it with each, and every vehicle I own, be it car/truck/motorcycle. It's a good idea, this way you can see if something is going wrong,,,, like if your gas mileage begins to change for the worst, you 'll be able to check on your book, look back and see what you "have/haven't" done in a while.
👍👍
That's what I've always done too. 3 X 5 notebooks are cheap and easily stored in the glovebox.
Soon u try Amsoil Signature series pair with Amsoil oil filter
Yea I don't think letting a vehicle sit too long is good! At least run it before the gas goes bad!
Like what ? FOURTY THOUSAND is just unheard of... 150k is considered low...
It's not like a blood test !!!
Okay
Jimmy, try Amsoil..
U say costco try their oil its better than Mobil 1. And do the oil test on it.
Yes, I’ve seen it but yet to try it.
I've been using CostCo oil for the last 4 oil changes (5K miles) on my Ranger, and the oil samples show about the same as before. The engine only has 329K on it though...
Here I am with a 200k GMT-360 😂
i have a question please
the dash in my car don't show kilometers anymore i changes light and checked fuse but still same problem, do i need to buy new dash? thank you
Need to have instrument cluster repaired or replaced.
@@Tablesaw818 yes I'll do it but i heard that my car kilomètres will dissappear and the new cluster car kilometers will be in my car is that True or not?
sorry for my English and thank you very much
@@difsid569 it all depends on the year, make and model of the vehicle. Most newer clusters can be programmed.

That Mobile1 youre holding is NOT fully synthetic its synthetic blend group 3 oil, and no oil will help that gmc lol
And the black stone labs website is???
Sorry, it’s pinned at the top of the comments now. 🤦♂️
Do yourself a favor. Get a fumoto drain valve. Also, that doesn’t mean it “sat”. Maybe they just didn’t take road trips in it or lived close to “town”.
His oil drain looks like mine, straight down. That's the reason I didn't get a Fumoto valve on my current Ranger. Afraid it may catch on something and bend, or worse break the pan. I do miss the 'no tools needed' oil changes...
@@fredflintstone4715 you’re afraid, I get it. But it won’t. Give it a shot.
So the oil you drained has just done 15,000 miles?
Nice one, what’s the real point of this video ??
