In theory I could really like this but I just can't bring myself to read YA romance books these days. I am not above cringe or tropes, so that doesn't bother me (if it's cringe and tropes that I like). But it's often times either something I've read before for free online somewhere (cough fanfiction) or it's always the same. And in the very nature of YA there is the issue that it's about very young women or even girls. I think that's my biggest issue, I just long for (good!!) books with some older lesbian protagonists but they are rare in every genre. I mean it makes sense that YA is about young adults so I don't blame the genre. As an "older" woman who has left the young adult range maybe five years ago it just feels a bit weird. And as I said, twenty somethings are popular in adult literature as well so I think I am just a bit tired of it. Either way, I love your book reviews! ❤

I definitely agree with most everything you said and it felt good to hear someone else voice some of the slightly disappointing parts about it. The only thing - I guess I thought that the woman was able to find the castle because the magic was sort of running thin and starting to go wonky? so that little part didn't really bother me. But also I do wish her magic capabilities has been explained better! It definitely felt a bit silly that she was so helpless when it came to the fire
I just read this book and really enjoyed it! It felt a lot like a lesbian version of Naomi Novik’s ‘Uprooted,’ which was a book I loved as a teen. It felt so nice to finally have a sapphic fairy tale to keep me company on dark lonely nights.
I discovered the book because of this video and really enjoyed (also a 4 stars for me). Thanks! I read it in one day. There's something so captivating about it. I share your feelings about the Witch being unable to control the fire lol.

I think Im gonna DNF this one at 54%. as you said, the author doesn't use their time on the castle well. they do nothing. the plot it's so interesting but at the castle it's just boredom. so many interesting things could've been written. i'm very disappointed. not to mention... a girl alone in a castle... witch a witch.... YA? YIKES. At least it should be adult contemporary.
