Note: In LoL Lore the Lamb and the Wolf are known as Kindered and represent death. (Lamb == peaceful death, Wolf == Violent Death). So what she is raised by is by death essentially and rather than letting go of her innocence, she lets go of the possibility of a peaceful death (thus peaceful life) and embreaces the fate of a warrior
In noxus the lamb exists to lead people to wolf instead of offending a peaceful death like in other regions. Thats how a rioter explained it anyways from my understanding.
The figure that offers her the stone with the wolf heads is actually the Noxian version of the Lamb. In Noxus, they don't revere the Lamb, they revere the Wolf, seeing the death in battle as the only death worth striving for. The whole scene is Ambessa wrestling with death, striving to prove herself worthy of continuing to live and fight another day. Also, post-Arcane, it is confirmed that it is Mel that she's pregnant with at this moment, and the flash of gold there is Mel literally saving her mother's life at this moment. I really love the whole Runterra lore with the wolf and the lamb, and I'm very glad to see that they are continuing to build their narrative with it.
Noxus reveres both Lamb and Wolf. To know the Kindred is to know both. They just view Wolf as the more honorable death. Conversely, Demacia believes Lamb to be the more honorable way of passing.
I love at the very end where the wolf wanders back through the morning mist, like death allowing her to live by sheer force of will. As far as other League of Legends cinematics to watch, there is literally one dropping tomorrow morning about Noxus(where Ambessa comes from) and the cinematic was made by Fortiche, so that would totally be worth checking out. Great analysis as always brother!
This is honestly one of the best breakdowns of this video I've seen. It's so amazing how you're able to understand these characters so well solely through the cinematography.
The first time I watched this, I just had the most visceral cry at the end with Ambessa screaming and the choir taking over at the end. That bit reminds me of Muses singing about the tragic story of Hercules. Its like this song is equal parts triumph and mourning, how pain and trauma and tragedy can turn you into something stronger but also something you cognitively, empathetically recognize as wrong. Survival versus sacrifice. God, I hate her in the show sometimes, but I'd be lying if this song wasn't on repeat for me at the gym.
What a good analysis! Well done. I noticed two things in this music video. The Fortiche studio, which produced Arcane and this video, never chooses an image, a shot, a scene without reason or reference. These people never make something beautiful just to look beautiful (which would already be incredible), but bring another level of reading. The last scene where we see Ambessa on the beach contemplating his defeat is located at the foot of the cliffs of Etretat. In a novel by Maurice Leblanc (the creator of Arsène Lupin), the stone needle of Etretat hides a secret which allowed Caesar and William the Conqueror to invade England. Napoleon failed because he did not know the secret of the needle. Three warlords like Ambessa. The theme of the wolf and the lamb obviously refers to Jean de la Fontaine's tale "The Wolf and the Lamb" where a merciless wolf devours a lamb that he has wrongly accused. A tale of moral teaching for the King of France Louis XIV. The tale begins with "the reason of the strongest is always the best" a statement denied in the rest of the tale. In Arcane, Ambessa justifies her actions by this very questionable philosophy: "a wolf has no mercy". The level of writing and direction is breathtaking.
I totally agree with your take on innocence and life for the lamb here but I think there are various meanings applying at the same time. I think additionally this is quite literally meant since the lamb stands for an innocent life and has a blue bracelett, i think this is supposed to be her son Kino who she "willingly" gave up/sacrificed in order to save Mel ("I pray you never have to suffer the agony of forsaking one child to save the other). In that Shurima setting she sacrifices the lamb but agonizes about it (blue/whilte paint with her doja moment; blue = Kino) and it is painful for her. Thats why in one scene a young child(=Kino) holds the lamb and she cries about it. Mel on the other hand carries the lamb/wolf theme within herself as well. At the end of Arcane she wears the white cloak (=lamb) and later when winning against he mother and the black rose(LeBlanc) she is in her black wolf's clothing revealing her combat power. Ambessa even cofirms it with "you are the wolf!" at that moment. For noxus the lamb is differently seen than in other Runeterra cultures. Since giving up or showing weakness is a shame, in noxus the lamb does not offer the swift arrow of death at all but only the way of the wolf (wolf relict). From this believe the scars Ambessa receives are scars of gold and seen - as you said - as a badge of honor. The amor you see Ambessa in at the end is the her skin "Chosen of the Wolf".
well 9:07 its champion called kindred witch is death he collect souls of dead people and kindred is two seperate spirits with different role first spirit wolf: who collect souls for people who dont want to die with very hurtful way thats why he was there in beginning and second spirit is lamp came to people who accept death giving peaceful death but kindred know that ambessa wont die on that war on 10:24 but after that next events
One more thing: In the cinematic "Still here" you can see another champion fight Kindred. Tryndamere, who´s also a warrior. As already stated, all over Runeterra, people either accept their death, or fight it. If they fight, they fight the wolf. The warriors Ambessa is fighting represent the Wolf in her minds eye, fighting death. They are not her soldiers. In the end, after the fight and her transformation, accepting her warriors life, she is standing with them, because the wolf accepted her fighting spirit. Letting her live, among the warriors. Funny enough, Fortiche decided to use other champions of the game, for those warriors. If you look at the frame at 8:40 you will see them. Swain on the left, the current ruler of Noxus. Pantheon, the aspect of war. And Katarina, a noxian assassin, wich is the red haired lady you can see in the new Noxus cinematic.
I understand there is a lore behind this. However as a mother myself, I can't help but feel her moments of mourning and grief in these scenes are for her Child Kino who she sacrificed (or couldn't save). There seems to be so much guilt and pain around it and it would explain why she fights so hard, and willing to join the wolf. Once she finally gets that moment of "full form" in the ending scenes, there are moments she is wincing or almost like she is trying to "snap out" of this illusion and realizes she has to fight to survive for the child she is carrying or perhaps remember the sacrifice of Kino, which cannot be in vain. In season 2 when we see Mel confront Ambessa about Kino, as the hardened woman she is, there is a split moment of vulnerability where she sheds a tear for her deceased son. She even claims he was all the sweetness in her heart. If we listen to the lyrics in the second verse, it states " there's a hand on my throat and a child and my feet" which could symbolize her position of having no choice in the regards to the sacrifice she made for both her children . Either way, I can't watch this video without crying.
Ironic part of this video is Half of it has nothing to do with the arcane backstory, or ambessas backstory in Arcane, Kindred spirit yea, but this was a cinematic for Ambessa yes and some back story for her and the ritual she did to bless Mel with those mage powers (Theory) but then the other half is to showcase the new league of legends skin line and won't ever be mentioned or shown in the new season of "Arcane" I will call it that for now since we don't know what its going to be called, So the troops you mentioned you probs won't see mainly because one of them is Katarina, the assassin from the Welcome to Noxus cinematic the red head chick who fought with the giant spider elise
9:44 I absolutely HATE this scene and its environment. Everything else feels real, authentic and original. This one gives me a ‘cool pop music video’ vibe and kicks me out of the world they got me sucked in
