I favorited this video probably around a year ago. Last month or so I bought a print of the finished piece without realizing where I'd seen it before, until just now when I was going back through my favorites and found it again.
Hi, Roby! Stunning painting of the owl. Watching you paint puts me in a calm, happy place. So generous of you to share your process and your beautiful artwork. I always look forward to your videos. ☺️
Hi Brenda! Thank you for your continued lovely compliments, you're so generous to me. I sincerely appreciate it and I'm glad that you're enjoying them so much! Thanks again, your artist friend... Roby
Hi again! Thank you Kayleigh for all of your nice comments. I appreciate that you took the time to write! I am using CarbOthello pastel pencils and I get them at Dick Blick on-line. :)) Roby
I just want to say to you THANK YOU! Everytime I look at one of your video I learn something new which is fantastic! You are a very good person and, obviously, an amazing artist!!! Thanks Roby!!
+AF - FineArt Hello AF -FineArt ~ You're so very welcome! I'm so glad that my little videos are helping you, that's wonderful. Thank you for your generous and appreciated remarks, makes me happy! Thanks again! :)) Roby
Dear Roberta, This demonstration was wonderful..well beyond wonderful. the eyes, the feathers..so captivating. I'm trying to paint a Barn Owl in Acrylic for a gift (6"6")..I understand how the Owl is put together a little better now! Thank you.
What absolutely incredible detail; I could nearly swear this was a photograph when completed. While I don't anticipate ever reaching this level of skill, my sincere thanks for the inspiration!
@The Horse Lady 1212 As for the lasting time on the Carbos, that's hard to say. Most of the colors last a good long time. The colors that go faster are white, black, light yellow #105 and light blue#435. I can get through about 4-5 small paintings before I need to replace those colors especially the first 3 mentioned.
Wow! I am lost for words. This is so intricate and beautiful, your talent is incomprehensible. You have inspired me to practice more with different mediums. I love it, thank you for sharing this.
@TheHorseLady1212 Hi! Aw, thanks for the sweet comment! My pencils seem to last fairly well. When you sharpen don't leave them in for too long. I have found that especially with a new sharpener you only need to leave it in about one or two seconds after your initial sharpening. Any longer and you just grind off needlessly. The sharpener that I use is the X-ACTO Powerhouse that I purpchase at Office Max. Get the warrenty to go with it, it saves in the long run!
@x979023x Thanks so much for your nice comment, I appreciate it! My favorite brand seen here are the CarbOthello pastel pencils. I get them at Dick Blick, you can buy them in sets, by the box or as singles. Be careful not to drop them though. If the pastel gets broken inside they won't sharpen!! I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric sharpener that I get at Office Max. Get the warrenty, it's worth it! Good luck and have fun!
Hello! Thank you for the nice comment. Believe me...we artists are our own worst critics!! Keep practicing and learning and have fun with it!! :)) Roby
Sacred Phalaenopsis Hello Sacred Phalaenopsis ~ Thank you so very much for this lovely comment, how nice of you to take the time to support me! Many thanks~ :)) Roby
@theeachuisge Hello! Thanks very much! I use Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum the 10 ply. My pencils are Stabilo CarbOthello pastel pencils and some of my favorite soft pastel sticks are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt. :)) Roby
@love4JHWH Hello! Thank you for your nice comments! I pretty much just do pastels. I have done some oils in the past but stick to the pastels as it what I know and love. My favorite brands of soft pastels are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt. My paper is Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum 10 ply. I find that it has a great tooth for my style of painting and you can apply several layers with no problems. Thanks again! :) Roby
Hello! Thank you for the nice comment!! Keep practicing, you'll get it! Most of all have fun with the journey, it's all a learning experience! Thanks again... :)) Roby
This is unbelievable!! This has to be the BEST owl drawing that I have ever seen!! It's amazing how you do such detailed drawings, but yet they are so small!! Great job, this is definitely subscribe worthy :D
I have to say, I absolutely adore your talent! I am a huge fan of artwork, and love to draw or paint, but can never seem to get the face-shapes down correctly. I am in agreement with you about drawing and painting eyes; they're wonderful! Great work!
As always, beautiful work, Roby. I aspire to create works even half as wonderful as yours. I would love to see you do some (even if brief) tutorials on how you render various textures (like feathers and fur) and other things, like owl eyes, etc. Thank you.
Hello DJ Stephens, thank you for your very nice comment! I sincerely appreciate it. I haven't yet built the confidence to actually talk lol!!! Maybe sometime. I can tell you though it's all about layering and blending one color in with the next when using the pencils. I lay in the first color then use the next color to blend them both in. As for doing hair, it's like putting shingles on a roof. One over the next working your way down. It's time consuming but the results are worth it. Thanks again for stopping by! :)) Roby
@Twilight4Real Hello! Thank you so much!! Practice is so helpful, the more you do the better you get! :)) I use dry chalk, stick pastels and CarbOthello pastel pencils. My favorite stick pastels are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt to name a few. Thanks again! :)) Roby
WOW so great you have a great talent. ART and painting is my hobby i gonna plan to make an owl butt i did not know what owl i gonna chose so you inspired my for BARN OWL. Thanks Roby.
Hello elcaminante500! Greetings to you in Peru...Thank you very much for this nice comment, much appreciated! I'm glad that you enjoyed watching and thanks again. :)) Roby
@BumbleDumle Hello and thank you! I do use reference photos, either my own photography or other photographers WITH permission. I can draw out of my head but I like using a reference better! :))
Beautiful work, Roby. Thank you for putting these out for all of us. I had never considered pencils and chalk before today. Always wondered how in the world! And now I have seen your inspirational talent. Thanks again, San
Hi San! Thank you very much for your nice comment, I appreciate that! I enjoy doing the videos and will continue to do so. Give the pastels a try...just might be a great fit for you. Should you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me. If I know the answer I'll share it. Thanks again! :)) Roby
@TheRyanst Hello! Lets start with the paper, I use Bristol Board 500 cold press. I then use pastel sticks, some of my favorite brands.... Rembrandt, Sennilar, Schmincke (so buttery soft) Unison to name a few. I apply the pastel sticks and then push it into the paper with my fingers. Give it a try, it's fun!!
Hi Melanie, I'm using all soft pastels. My pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils and I get them at Dick Blick on-line. To achieve the "fluff" it's about adding layers and contrasts. If you'll notice I lay in a color and then use next color to blend them both in. That gives you a soft look then continue on with the same process. For shading use your darker shades to recede and the lighter colors to stand out, that gives the painting depth and dimention. :) Roby
@drawingfreak321 Hello! Thanks so much for your great comment, so nice! Keep practicing, I'm always learning something even if it's by accident! :) Roby
Hello! I am using the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric sharpener. I get them at Office Max. We have a local store but you can get them on-line as well. They don't get that great of ratings but I've never ever had any problems with them. If you get the warranty as soon as it gets dull you can return it for a new one, love that! When it gets dull enought to start breaking the points off consistantly, thats when I return it. :)) Roby
Hello! Thank you so much for this wonderful compliment, it is just beyond fabulous and so much appreciated!!! I'm so glad that I have inspired you to try different mediums. Thank you for taking the time to comment with this fantastic praise and support! Good luck with your artwork!! :)) Roby
@ Georgette Orwell For some reason I'm unable to respond to your comment so I hope you may see this. I'm doing well, thanks for asking! I've been super busy with commissions and haven't had a spare minute to do another video. I plan on doing more for sure as soon as I can. Thanks again for stopping by to say hey! :)) Roby
Hello there! Yeah, the Faber's are fine and I have an artist friend that uses them and she says that the Fabers don't fit the sharpener as well as the Carbo's which I love. It's a matter of personal choice. The Carbo's are rated one of the top two brands and are lightfast too! I'll just stick with my CarbOthells and soft pastel sticks that I am used to and call it a day. Thank you for your comments, very nice of you! :)) Roby
Very generous of you to share this beautiful piece, in response to the feeble criticism re: tracing photo, would be very interesting to see said persons work! Wonder if he has ever traced?? so what!!!! it served a purpose and the drawing skills are surely there if you are able to render such accomplished work. Bravo!!
Hello Victoria~ It's my pleasure to share. Since it's a linked comment I didn't see the tracing criticism. I have worked very hard over my artistic journey and have practiced thousands of hours to hone my drawing skills. I'd go one on one with anyone to prove that I have NEVER traced anything!! To me the graphite drawing is the hard part. I use a see through ruler (had this one for 40 years) measuring distances against my reference photo keeping me on track. The pastels are like I'm a little girl again coloring in my coloring book lol!! Thank you so very much for your support and "having my back" that means a lot to me! Your friend... :)) Roby
Not to butt in but did you use colored pencils before switching to pastels? I have a set but they see very hard, but they will erase! lol. Right now I'm just doing graphite and charcoal but wonder if you went through a colored pencil stage?
By definition if you fill all of the paper with pigment it is defined a painting. If the background paper plays a significant roll in the finished artwork it is defined a drawing. Because the pure powdered binders and pigments are the same as in all colored mediums including oils they are considered a painting medium. The debate on this rolls on but I consider my pastel artwork paintings as do most pastelists. :)) Roby
Hello! Thanks for the great comment, I appreciate that! I had high school art but that's it. I've always loved drawing and started at an early age. My Grandmother and Mother were both artists so I guess you could say it's in the genes! I will be uploading another video fairly soon so stay tuned! Thanks again! :)) Roby
Thanks! beautiful work, you make magic with pencils, so subtle but with such a realistic visual punch.........I'm painting an owl for the 1st time...I'm discovering that feathers are a subtle undertaking............
Hello tpe54~ Thank you very much for your great compliment, I appreciate it very much. I hope that you have a great time working on your owl painting feathers and all!! Thanks again for taking the time to comment! :)) Roby
Hi Roby. This is superb. A decent length video doing your focus on amazingly fine detail and great use of colour and blending. I was attracted to this as I love barn owls and paint birds in watercolour - I like fine detail too, but having seen your great work it's inspired me to have a go at pastel. Thanks for sharing it - really lovely! :-)
@CandyKilledUsAll Hello! I didn't splain myself very well, lol! I do blow all of the dust away as soon as I can between pencils. I just leave some for effect to blow away on the video as I had mentioned. My editor and I think it's fun to watch it dissapear. Silly....I know!! :)) Roby
Thank you Judith! I'm using the X-ACTO Electric powerhouse sharpener. It doesn't get the best of reviews but I've personally never had any trouble with them.I purchase them at Office Max. :)) Roby
Wow! I just happened to see this after a friend posted it on twitter. You are rrly talented...I wish I could draw like this, it's totally amazing and beautiful!
Hello Vesper~ Thanks so much for taking the time to give me this nice comment, I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks again and Happy New Year! :)) Roby
Hi! Sure, you can certainly achieve similar results with the prismacolors but the blending will be differant due to the prisma being waxie and the pastels not. I don't have a lot of experience with the prisma's but it would be fun to try. :)) Roby
@kayhayhay Hi there! I know it seems strange to call it a painting but here is how it goes. If you fill in all of the surface with pastel it's call a painting but if you only did just the subject and left the background as is it's called a rendering or a drawing. Thanks for your question, I've had that one before. :)) Happy New Year
Hello! I am using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Some of my favorite brands of soft pastels are Rembrandt, Unison, Sennelier and Schmincke. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric sharpener to get the great sharp points, purchased at Office Max. My other supplies I purchase at Dick Blick on-line. :)) Roby
Hi! Love Skittles! I'm am using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Some of my favorite brands are Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison and Schmincke. My paper is Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum. :)) Roby
Hi! Actually I do use graphite. But...I'm not heavy handed with it so the pastel will go right over it without any problem. It's when you press to hard and dent the paper and put too dark of a line and go over it and over it that it interferes with the pastels. If I notice that I have put too dark of a line I'll go in and lift up some of the graphite with a kneadable eraser. I use the Dixon Ticonderoga 1388-2HB soft. :)) Roby
fantastic art¡¡ me encantan los dibujos de animales salvajes, me asombra el color y detalles en las plumas que has logrado (the color and details in feathers are amazing) no es nada facil, (its no easy to do...) saludos desde Peru
@becsvet1 What a lovely comment Becky, now very nice of you to take the time to say such wonderful things about my painting, THANK YOU!!! Just thank you!!!!
Hello! Thank you for the fav and thanks very much for the purchase. That is amazing, guess you like it! You're great for letting me know, sweet! :)) Roby
Hello! Thank you! I use a simple graphite pencil the Dixon Ticonderoga 1388-2/HB Soft. I look at my reference photo and I'm pround to say that I actually draw it out. I don't use projectors or trace. I have practiced a lot of years do do decent drawings for my paintings. I use CarbOthello pastel pencils and soft stick pastels such as Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison and Schmincke. Paper is Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 cold press Vellum 10 ply. Supplies at Dick Blick on line. :)) Roby
Thank you for sharing. This owl looks so real, it looks like I could touch it. Very well done. Just beautiful. I love owls.

Hi Eline! Thank you very much! Practice is the key!! Thanks again! :)) Roby
:)) Happy New Year
looks real...that is very amazing
Hi trueblue Last! Thanks so much! :)) Roby
Beautiful!
:)) Roby
Thanks for the comment and good luck with your painting! :))
:)) Roby
Magnificent again.
:)) Roby
