  • @larsfrandsen2501

It is very interesting for me coming back to Genesis after 30 years away from it. I lost interest in the band a few years after Gabriel and Genesis parted ways, although I do love the albums they put together right up to and including And Then They Were Three. The undeniable highlight of their writing, for me, was Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, which I regard as a masterpiece by any standard.
So what did I do in the interim? Well, Genesis and some of the other musicians around their circles (Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth and a few others) made me want to study music seriously. I put my entire life’s effort and soul into doing just that, and I graduated with degrees from three very prestigious music schools in London and New York.
I have loved the music of Genesis since I was a teenager, and I am no causal consumer of their music. Coming back to it now, I find that I still love their writing just as much as I did back then.
Listening to many hours of interviews with the members of Genesis lately, it seems clear that they regard themselves as song writers first and performers secondarily. Tony Banks in particular mentions several times during various interviews that he never had any particular desire to be on stage to perform his own music; the writing was the important aspect of his musicianship. The other core Genesis members seem to share Tony Banks’ attitude.
Along comes a professional concert pianist to play these marvellous compositions by some of the most gifted song writers in the history of rock music. For those perhaps not too familiar with professional classical music training, the technique of a pro concert pianist might seem overwhelming or excessive. But as any professional pianist would attest to, I am sure, playing Genesis is no match in complexity to playing, say, Rachmaninov, Chopin or Bach.
This is not some guy showing off: compared to the heavy weight rep that this pianist also plays, he probably learned this Genesis medley relatively easily.
I feel fairly sure that Tony Banks would feel proud to have his music played by such an accomplished instrumentalist. I can’t argue with him. I think the pieces stand up to many interpretations, including, of course, the original performances by the writers themselves. But I must chuckle when I read some of the comments below suggesting that the pianist here is trying to show off.
I am reminded that rock music of my youth was, surprisingly, one of the most conservative and reactionary of art forms, where audiences wanted note-for-note reproduction live as they had come to expect from the recordings. How silly is that?! Accept we must that a solo piano performance does not have the weight of a rock band behind it and therefore must try to create excitement by other means.
Wonderful performance! Different, yes, but wonderful!

The younger working class generation were too angry for that, and so turned to punk instead. However, I have noticed an awful lot of young TH-cam reactors enjoying this music again. And I’m heartened by that. Music that extends beyond 3 minutes and takes you on an odyssey of escapism is simply magical. And Genesis, Yes, and Floyd were the best of the best at doing that.

I agree it's too fast, and I'd argue a bit too "fortissimo" (loud) in spots as well. Unlike an electronic keyboard, the piano is about dynamics. Some of these melodies are rather delicate and should be played as such. But in fairness, things tend to get louder and faster when you're performing live for an audience, it's just a different energy than playing for the cat and the goldfish in your room.

Always thought 'Hairless Heart' would make a marvelous 'classical' subject for piano. He proved it. Love that he chose to include 'Mad Man Moon', one of the most beautiful of Genesis' many, many fantastic melodies (though a little heavy handed at times).

This video is perfect to show to the young people the quality of the compositions from Genesis.
I am lucky to have seen the concerts in the years 1970 in Paris.
Tony Banks is a not only a great composer but also a very good pianist.
Actually the singers have rarely a classic formation.

I disagree, tony banks is a concert pianist, rock pianist, remember that the majority of Early Genesis came from the roots of classical music (Steve Hackett is a trained classical guitarist, Peter Gabriel is a flautist, Tony Banks is a Classically trained Pianist) to contribe where the music comes from its deffinative classical music that is the core component of Classic Prog Rock!

Nelson Robert Willis don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Genesis in all of their iterations, even the one later with ray wilson as their lead singer, however what I meant by that comment is that he plays these songs way too fast, especially firth of fifth which loses some of its beauty when it's rushed like this. Still amazingly played though, just feels rushed.

Once again this proves that Genesis music could of been written by any of the great composers. They stand alongside Mike Oldfield, and a few others, as the classical music of our day.

  • @retro-spective3403
    @retro-spective3403 ปีที่แล้ว

Brilliant skills and interpretation for sure, but way too fast overall for my liking, like he was in a hurry to finish it, but that’s his choice as artist of course.
There was definitely something lost for me by speeding it up, a big part of the appeal of Genesis was the melody and the pace to absorb the melody, rushing it seems to disrespect the original intent!
    Just my opinion!

  • @FireMunki63

I agree with Chris Chapman. Very mechanical. An overly technical approach to music imho, makes no sense. The original work is fantastic. Of course.
