Kaili music: Dade' ndate - Taripa

"Dade'ndate" is a traditional ensemble, consisting of a vocalist, a Kecapi player and a Mbasing-Mbasing flutist, sometimes widened by a smal Gendang drum or a second Kecapi player.
This ensemble is almost extinct, the only place where it still exists is the small village Taripa, somewhere in the middle of nowhere north of Palu. This village has a little statue of a Kecapi player, so the Kecapi seems to be of importance here.
"Dade'" means "to sing" and "ndate" means "over there" in Kaili language. We truly did the recording "over there", because in the village there were to many distracting sounds from the traffic. We went out in the djungle close by, put a mat on the floor, and within in the hissing sounds of the crickets we started the recording.
The first piece is called "andi andi" and is a formal greeting. The most important aspect of this music is the lyrics, which are made up by the singer just right out of the moment. If you listen closely you can hear "German" and "America", as this greeting is for us, who made the long way to come her and record this music.
The second piece is a memorized love song called "jiwa ladi sayang". You can see that the memorized songs are harder to perform, as the singer stumbles a bit before getting in.
There is also a kidding or goofing song called "ina lele" which can be seen in the next video.
