how long ago did you have it? how many miles? some of those transmissions from back that far werent great. they all become better refined in the late 80's and were decent until they were made over complex the last decade
Absolutely and did you know you can take the 727 transmission from a standing start or 70 miles an hour on the freeway 110 on the freeway shift to neutral Master pedal to the floor drop it back into gear and it will burn rubber for 100 yards or more no damage to the transmission you will want to get another differential yoke heavy duty
I actually ended up getting a dodge charger over a mustang/Camaro purely because the chargers come with the ZF8 speed transmission. Sure the chargers aren't as fast, but at least I can count on my transmission to make it to 200k+ with no issues. It shifts beautifully too
You can make CVT transmissions work well and be reliable. Its quite easy, you service them and change the oil in them yearly and you also fit magnets into the sump. You can expect them to last as long as the car if you do that.
I disagree on the Nissan JATCO CVTs, they are the weakest CVT transmissions. Mine went out out at 67,000 miles on my 2015 Nissan Rogue, and yes I kept the fluid changed at the dealer. My friend also had his Nissan CVT die at 81,000 miles. They are simply unreliable weak CVTS!

My 2009 Nissan Altima ran great for 130K miles then it showed classic signs of CVT transmission failure, I was lucky to get a few bucks on a trade. The whole time I had it I was told by several mechanics and Nissan don’t touch the fluid, now I know that if you replace it about every 40,000 miles it will enhance the life of the transmission.
Hi Mark. Being a 19 f150 and 13 audi q5 owner, the 10R80 has been solid for me. A few smoothness issues over 5 years so far. Definitely not as nice as the ZF 8 tiptronic, but reliable for me. I know that others not do lucky. In the mustang gts tho, the 10R80 is really good. I think it just needs sport tuning to shine! Thanks for sharing.
I worked at Chrysler,FCA at the time, for two yrs from 13-15. But we would put the transmissions on the test stands and they would fail but our supervisors made us tag them as "ok" and ship them. Even though they failed. Even in production while making the components for the transmissions the parts would be out of acceptable perimeters and again we would be told to tag them as good parts and send em to assembly. One day I asked why are we shipping transmissions as good after they failed and parts weren't correct and I was told that's what a warranty is for. No joke. So ppl are buying new cars with bad transmissions from the dealership. Then add in the alcoholics and drug addicts Chrysler employs and allows to come to work drunk or high. They drink on the job. Get high on the job. Knowing what I know and seen I would NEVER buy a Dodge, Chrysler,Ram or Jeep.
The E46 BMW 325i with the ZF 5HP19 automatic transmission was notorious for losing its reverse gear. But I didn't know that until after I bought the car. Less than a month after I bought a used E46 BMW 325i from Lithia BMW in Portland, OR, it lost its reverse gear. Lithia told me they sold it to me "as is", and quoted a repair cost of more than $4,500. The motor has been rock solid, but I've had to replace the steering pump, the xenon headlight assembly, two of the window regulators, the windshield washer pump, central locking system, all six ignition coils...
A great video and well presented also. You've done something really unique. No one I've found has ever presented a video on transmissions. I hope one day you present one listing the BEST transmissions. For myself, I limit my vehicles to Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru. Would love to know about the better transmissions. Thank you for your presentation.
I had a 07 caravan with the of the short wheel bases. I serviced the transmission every 30000 miles and mechanic who did every one said it looked in mint condition. Perhaps if we stopped requiring unrealistic gas mileage increases every year, the car companies can stick with what works!
I'm surprised to not see the Getrag gear grinder MT82 on the list. I had one in my 2023 Mustang and it was very problematic with grinding and gear lock outs. Thankfully my 10 speed Mustang has been flawless.
Nissan just pisses me off. They had a reputation in the 90's and early 2000's for decent cars with good reliability. I have a 2002 Manual Pulsar that just keeps going and never goes wrong. Would love to update to a newer Nissan but just cannot trust the product.
My 2002 Xterra 4X4 purchased new. 165000 miles only problem 2 years ago I replaced exhaust manifolds and 4 catalytic converters. That's it! No other work but manufacturers suggested maintenance. No payment since 2006. Costs $850 a year to keep her on the road. I'll keep her until I die.
Want instant torq on acceleration? Want super low RPM on hwy? Want good power band at all speed? Like to drive fast? Then they make 10 speed trans! To meet the fuel mileage, Go 10 speed. Then we get 10 speed
A lot of bad automotive maladicta about the Jatco turd box CVT, to the point where it sounds as though Nissan destroyed their brand by using them. But no attempt to improve or replace. 30K fluid changes might help, but inherently they are bad. Toyota's CVT is fairly reliable, used in Corolla and even the new Crown series (except the Platinum which as a 6 speed non-CVT). The TH400 GM transmission (introduced in 1965) was considered one of the best transmissions ever made, three speed, a cast iron unit, even Rolls Royce used them from about 1967 until 1992. Now GM has fallen to junk.
Worked on these before, CVTs are fine on smaller cars if you maintain them and don’t mash the gas pedal all the time - drive it lightly and smooth and it’ll be fine, don’t listen to the mass fear!!! I’ve had many CVT’s at 200k miles, all original units. Sure if you want 300k+ from a gearbox get a reg trans or a hybrid eCVT
Bought a 2017 Nissan Versa new, and I will say it, YOU MUST OVER MAINTAIN IT. CHANGE THE FLUID FREQUENTLY, AT HALF THE RECOMMENDED INTERVAL. Never had a problem with mine.
My 2018 Ford Explorer waterpump went out year and cost me 4200.00 for replacement because the waterpump is inside the engine behind the timing chain Now power steering went out and the transmission gave up on me last weekend which will cost me 4200.00 again. I only owe 7 more on it and trading it in to the first Ford dealer I get to
What is crazy ,in my opinion, they have been building auto trannys since , I think ,1948 in a Oldsmobile .All those decades and you would think the industry could engineer and manufacture a quantity item
They chose not to invest in their manufacturing and instead kept putting the same old junk instead. Stubborn and trying to ride the name for as long as possible. The market is open new players will take the show away
They have made great transmissions, and great engines as well... The biggest problem is the government, and dumb consumers that just want bigger and better for no reason, fucking manufacturers have no choice but to change things up and try to improve, the longevity and reliability is already been done, and we will never see that again.
Consumer report suggests that Nissans are actually reliable vehicles! But regardless of that I have seven Nissans in my family none of them have had engine or transmission issues! But everybody else in my family with American or German vehicles all they ever have is issues! I just traded in my 2010 Altima with 250,000 mi for a 2021 with 30,000 mi! These vehicles are workhorses and for the most part just as reliable as every other good brand out there! The problem with Nissan is people that never have driven them are always talking as if they could actually speak on the type of reliability of the vehicle. I would literally respect some of you more if you would just say yes I don't like the transmission but I don't know how reliable they are! Personally I always change my oil on time amongst all the other maintenance, but I do lyft and Uber I promise you I hammer the dog piss out of this transmission and every morning I wake up for work again and she's ready! Like I said 250,000 mi is nothing to snuff at when everyone said it wouldn't make it past 30,000 mi! Like I Like I said before every Nissan model has high ratings in every category but regardless of that the internet will always be the internet and the internet is the biggest reason why Nissan isn't having good sales right now! Like literally what do you expect someone's trying to buy a car and everyone online is saying don't buy something of course that company isn't going to make a lot of money! But what you do see is modern Nissans still being purchased and not on the side of the road like EV Hummers hellcats Durango's Ford broncos Chevy blazers and the list goes on Nissan is releasing quality products while almost everybody else is releasing shit! If you want to get a quality vehicle buy a Nissan ignore everything else don't listen to ignorance on the internet!
The GM 4T65E was garbage, and only lasted 70,000 miles. A clutch in the transmission wears out, and slips. Then you get hard shifting with a bang. When the clutch goes you end up not moving at all. The GM dealers keep the transmisdions in stock in the parts department because so many of them go. I had two Impalas with the 4T65E transmission, and they both failed by 70,000 miles. I have a 2006 Ford heading towards 200,000 miles. The Ford I have has the original drive train with no failures. Original engine and transmission.
Don't forget new Tacoma automatic and manual transmissions. Both like to fail before the first oil change, often before 1K miles. Then 4-6 months for a replacement.
As to Chryco. They made pretty reliable automobiles through the 80's and 90's. Laugh what you want folks but those K-cars of the 80's many were running 20+ years later. The 2.2 litre, 2.5 litre even the Mitsubishi based 3.0 litre engines of the time were pretty bullet proof. Even the the turbos were good as long as you changed the oil and filter as well as flushed the coolent regularly and they chugged along well. I owned an 88 Daytona Shelby Z with the 2.2 litre intercooled turbo. It had 245,000 kms on it when I stupidily chose to sell the car. The engine and turbo were just fine at the time. My 5 speed manual worked properly all those kms. The Chrysler old school 3 spd. Automatics used through the 80's into the 90's were all good transmissions. The early electronic controlled 4 spd autos had some issues but did get worked out ok.. where they as good as a Toyota or Honda? No not quite but they were not trash.

My 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander has a Jatco CVT, the same as the Nissan. I essentially forced Mitsubishi to replace the transmission at 98,000 miles while still under warrantee. The new Jatco has 25,000 miles on it and is beginning to act up already. The first thing I noticed that indicated the tranny was going bad was an odor like rubber burning so if you smell that and are still under warrantee, start bugging them and be sure it is documented that it is going bad.
The latest xtronic from Nissan is said to be improved dramatically and i must add that in Europe there are already examples which did a 100,000 miles without big problems. But...as i said in Europe combined with the 1.3 mild hybride. But agreed, the previous cvt's from Nissan were total rubbish certainly combined with certain engines so it seems. I'm not interested in owning anything with a belt/chain design CVT transmission. So, will likely stick with either Mazda & their modernized "SkyActiv 6-spd automatic" or a proper hybrid that uses an "eCVT" - which is nothing like the various belt/chain design CVTs found in 100% ICE vehicles. Would rather see more desirable manual transmission offerings, but that ship has sailed it would seem. I drove nothing but manuals from 1982 to 2022, but probably getting a bit old for that sort of fun now, & only a few decent vehicles even have that option in the USA now.

My old Honda hr-v made in Mexico had its cvt making grinding noises, jitters, etc. I then found out that cvt transmissions tend to break before other types. So now i decided to get the car i have now (the 21 A4 with the s tronic DCT) and it’s been great just did some services for it aka the 50k service Now my next gripe with people are the Toyota fanboys and some owners (mostly the fanboys though) who come and comment on videos that have nothing to do with Toyota and leave hate comments to cause arguments with people. Toyota can outlast some brands but they have issues too, and the fanboys refuse to admit that aspect, they just join up in the comments of a bmw or Audi themed video and say hate comments just to get the owners to argue with them. Thank god the Honda people weren’t this way, all they did was put a fart can exhaust on their civic 😂😂
Nissan sealed their fate with the cvt I own one will not own a nother one and nissan refuses to remove this garbage transmission from there vehicles and that is a big reason there in trouble today with new sales
you would think nissan would finally stop using that jatco junk. such a terrible reliability record for a long time now. i have a 2022 crosstrek (subaru) with the 6 speed manual, i bought it brand new you cant buy them with a manual anymore. i have trust in the stick and 3rd pedal, as long as you use the clutch they will outlast just about any automatic or CVT. much cheaper maintenance too. just because subaru advertises "lifetime" transmission fluids does not make it so. that just means the fluid lasts the "lifetime" of the transmission. if the transmission only lasts 80K miles because you never changed the fluid, that was the lifetime of that transmission. it's a marketing ploy.
Total B.S. on the Nissan Transmissions this guy continually rags on. If u r going to accuse a brand, how about backing it up with some stats? We won't be hearing back from u, wild guess! Every time you make a video on bad transmissions, I will always post here how my 2017 Nissan Sentra is holding up. I am currently at 141,560 miles on the original CVT transmission and it is still going strong. My CVT is still working as it did when I first bought it the car new. I guess I got lucky.
I brought my 2010 Nissan Altima Coupe used and had 77K miles now at 120K miles and its holding up !!
Just changed the oil every 30K miles and not mash the gas petal ..
I also now have a 2024 Nissan Altima SR VC - Turbo and it has 15K miles so far .. Love both ..
Awesome
Had a 78 Ford F150... replaced the automatic transmission twice!
Well not bad for that age
how long ago did you have it? how many miles? some of those transmissions from back that far werent great. they all become better refined in the late 80's and were decent until they were made over complex the last decade
You replaced a C6 transmission twice? Those units are everlast if you do the fluid and filter frequently and put an external cooler on them.
Mark you are so right on the Jatco trans
The Chrysler 727 and 904 was the 2 best transmission on the market back in the day
Absolutely and did you know you can take the 727 transmission from a standing start or 70 miles an hour on the freeway 110 on the freeway shift to neutral Master pedal to the floor drop it back into gear and it will burn rubber for 100 yards or more no damage to the transmission you will want to get another differential yoke heavy duty
@@DavidCastain-q1s Can't beat the Torqueflyte 727 for the end of the world.
I actually ended up getting a dodge charger over a mustang/Camaro purely because the chargers come with the ZF8 speed transmission. Sure the chargers aren't as fast, but at least I can count on my transmission to make it to 200k+ with no issues. It shifts beautifully too
So after 100 years of building transmissions Chrysler finally realized they can't make a reliable one and are using a German ZF transmissions
You can make CVT transmissions work well and be reliable. Its quite easy, you service them and change the oil in them yearly and you also fit magnets into the sump. You can expect them to last as long as the car if you do that.
Or you can just get any other kind of transmission and never have to think about any of that.
@@N20Joedream on..... I know plenty of examples of all sorts of automatic transmissions failing at around 75K miles when not being properly taken care of.
@@TheCaptjamestkirk So far the one in my Rogue is okay at 86K, and when
I bought it with 50K on it the dealer changed the transmission fluid, and brakes and said it's a cerified vehicle. They said they guranteed the powertrain to 120K
so I bought it. I'm looking throught the paperwork the other day I didn't see that
warranty that they sold me! It was supposed to be no charge but I want to see the paperwork.
@@metalmike570you weren't supposed to notice that until you wanted to file a claim!😂😂😂
1992 Ford Taurus wagon transmission left me stranded 600 mi from home got it fixed a week later brought it home two months later it went out in reverse under warranty local shop redid it for 400... No help from the dealership... Planetary gear lubrication problem
Had a 2011 Dodge Journey. Transmission died at 88k. Never again
Ouch
CVT is basically a skidoo tranny with a belt and two plates and a tensioner.
Maybe they should leave it accessible and throu in a big belt lol. 😂
Yes it should have a roadside repair for the DIYer as an option
Thanks for sharing. Yes there are several serious duds out there unfortunately
To my understanding, the problem with the focus transmission is with the DCT automatic’ If you get the manual, you should be okay.
Those Ford dual clutch vehicles have pretty much gone extinct already.
Good post, I agree!
Ford has been pumping out bad transmissions for decades . Contour,Fusion,Focus.Festiva, and the newer 10 speed automatic.
I deed
Also 2018-Newer Toyota and Lexus with 10 speed transmission is absolutely junk for me
Thanks
That’s why Ford got rid of almost all of their passenger cars because of the PowerShit transmission
Haha yes that’s a real problem. Indeed
Powercrap ..... Can't believethey did that
If you get a Ford Focus, get the manual transmission like I have
That’s a must for sure and in almost all cars when it’s available
Worked on these before, CVTs are fine on smaller cars if you maintain them and don’t mash the gas pedal all the time - drive it lightly and smooth and it’ll be fine, don’t listen to the mass fear!!! I’ve had many CVT’s at 200k miles, all original units. Sure if you want 300k+ from a gearbox get a reg trans or a hybrid eCVT
Exactly .. It seems like everyone who drives a CvT seems to wanna mash the gas petal so hard and then when it messed up they call it junk ..
Ok, who else is incorporating Mark’s “let’s get into this now!” in their lives? 😂
Bought a 2017 Nissan Versa new, and I will say it, YOU MUST OVER MAINTAIN IT. CHANGE THE FLUID FREQUENTLY, AT HALF THE RECOMMENDED INTERVAL. Never had a problem with mine.
Fix, or Repair Daily 😅
Yes very daily.....
CVT= chocolate vanilla twist
Great advice. Thanks for educating us.
My 2018 Ford Explorer waterpump went out year and cost me 4200.00 for replacement because the waterpump is inside the engine behind the timing chain
Now power steering went out and the transmission gave up on me last weekend which will cost me 4200.00 again. I only owe 7 more on it and trading it in to the first Ford dealer I get to
Folks, the 6R80 is hands down, the most robust transmission in auto history.
Nice
What is crazy ,in my opinion, they have been building auto trannys since , I think ,1948 in a Oldsmobile .All those decades and you would think the industry could engineer and manufacture a quantity item
Oh the industry can and does, yet some manufacturers vehemently refuse to.
Still can’t get it right
They chose not to invest in their manufacturing and instead kept putting the same old junk instead.
Wish I had known that about the Nissan before putting 214k miles, and climbing, on my Altima. I have been changing the cvt fluid every 60k miles.
Maintenance will help
You should work for Nasa To Avoid another challenger explosion!
Right?
Prior to CVT, Nissan vehicles were very much on par with Honda and Toyota..
My sister has a Chrysler minivan in that year range and it has 300,000. Km on her transmission and engine and still going.
Sounds like a good run
Don't forget new Tacoma automatic and manual transmissions. Both like to fail before the first oil change, often before 1K miles. Then 4-6 months for a replacement.
Well, that sounds like junk to me
My advice is when the car gear box is ready for the recycling bin just fit a hollenger gear box and for get the rest
Thanks for sharing, but I have seen some bad failures

My 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander has a Jatco CVT, the same as the Nissan. I essentially forced Mitsubishi to replace the transmission at 98,000 miles while still under warrantee. The new Jatco has 25,000 miles on it and is beginning to act up already. The first thing I noticed that indicated the tranny was going bad was an odor like rubber burning so if you smell that and are still under warrantee, start bugging them and be sure it is documented that it is going bad.
If you change the fluid once a year, regardless of mileage, it'll go forever. Overmaintain the unit.

Had a 2000Lexus RX in 2009 the transmission went out.$4500 repair so what transmission is good?
The latest xtronic from Nissan is said to be improved dramatically and i must add that in Europe there are already examples which did a 100,000 miles without big problems. But...as i said in Europe combined with the 1.3 mild hybride. But agreed, the previous cvt's from Nissan were total rubbish certainly combined with certain engines so it seems. And yes i own a Nissan but with the latest Xtronic version with only 20,000 miles so fingers crossed...lol. Of course i'll keep it well maintained which i doubt is always the case by owners in the US....
My 2018 Nissan Sentra was shaking so much that my driver seat came off. I went to the dealership and they lied to me because it was under warranty. As soon as warranty went out, the car completely died @ 25k mileage. I will never buy Nissan again.
I should stick to the manual Focus. Most people do in the UK. Nissan should have seen the light and dumped their shitty CVT design years ago. It has more or less destroyed the brand for many.
I got a 2013 ford explorer and within less than 24 hrs the transmission went out. The front end was horrible. Replaced the ball joints 10 times in less than 1 months! Junk car
you forgot to add Honda auto transmission that was in the Odyssey and other Acura products. The CVT in the 2016 Accord may be more reliable but certainly sucks the power out of the car and is terrible to drive

Id hesitate to listen to this guy. 10R80 is a ford transmission, but gm does make shit transmissions. The 6L80/90 sucks, and the 8L is worse. Theres a class action lawsuit against gm because theyre so bad. And the 10R80s have issues but theyre problems that can be fixed

You'd think the Big Three would be able to make a reliable car after more than a century...
GM, ford, Nissan, etc should learn how to make proper cars like Toyota.
Even toyota and honda transmissions die earlier
Yes many do
Nissan transmission are way better than they were before .. They updated and improved from 2016
I have a 2017 altima is that better and considered better updated than previous
My old Honda hr-v made in Mexico had its cvt making grinding noises, jitters, etc. I then found out that cvt transmissions tend to break before other types. So now i decided to get the car i have now (the 21 A4 with the s tronic DCT) and it’s been great just did some services for it aka the 50k service
Now my next gripe with people are the Toyota fanboys and some owners (mostly the fanboys though) who come and comment on videos that have nothing to do with Toyota and leave hate comments to cause arguments with people.
It's completely stupid manual transmissions aren't even an option anymore. I hate automatics.
Is the Subaru CVT any good?
Better than these ones & not a Jatco....like Mitsubishi & Suzuki are
Chain drive cvt is durable.
