  • This is a great little hidden gem of a city around 2 hours north of Osaka and Kyoto. It's essentially a mountain town but it's also known as a castle town due to Hikone castle. It's one of only 5 castles in Japan which is considered to be a national treasure. I will upload a video later showing the castle grounds and garden in great detail.

You still in Hikone? Reason I ask is that I bought some farmland out there. I am retiring... but back and forth for now. Would love to see some neighborhoods by the Driving Range out there actually where I live

I left Hikone in 2021 and am currently in Mexico City right now on the way to Bangkok next year lol I move a lot but yeah Hikone seems like a good place to retire for sure.

Hi, I'll be moving to Hikone in the next months, could you give me your thoughts on living near Hikone sta. Vs Minami-Hikone sta.? Pros and cons, I don't own a car, will that be important?

It all depends where you will be working/living/hanging out. They're a bit far apart from each other on foot and even bike. I had a bike and lived about 20 minutes by bike to Minami-Hikone which I would use to get to nearby cities in Shiga, Osaka and Kyoto. I'm pretty sure the train lines are different also. It all depends on your situation but you can definitely get by near these stations without a car but a bike would help a lot. There are a bit of bus lines also. It's definitely not super country but not a mega city either. It's a cool mountain town. I will say that it's certainly not as bike friendly as other Japanese cities since many have cars. It can be a bit risky to bike everywhere at times especially during the rain. That was fun lol

I'm actually currently living near Amsterdam but yeah Hikone was a beautiful city. I never went to the lake but you can always feel it. The climate is very breezy and fresh. I did see lake biwa from Hikone castle which I highly recommend. It's not touristy like I felt about Osaka castle, the grounds and gardens of Hikone castle are huge and fun to explore.

@@TheBillaro I just moved to Hikone a couple of months ago. As Mancer said, Hikone is a nice city, a bit small in my opinion (use to live in Tokyo so everything aside from Osaka just feels small hahaha). but it isn't too inaka either, haven't had any inconvenience so far. If you don't planning on getting a car, I'd suggest you on getting a bike, Hikone is quite flat so it's easy to ride here and it will give a lot more freedom.

@@samuelalonso2383 super pointo! Yes, I've got a bike in Kyoto. I love the quiet life. Going to explore nature and swim in biwa in the morning. I'll work for NOva.

Nope, I was working for a Japanese ALT company named Borderlink. They had me teaching English in 3 elementary schools located in Hikone.

I'm happy to hear that. I think he'll be happy there plus Osaka/Kyoto is only around 1-2 hours from Hikone so that's great 😎
