  • Our Jersey cow, Aleene, just had her baby. Here's some of the pre, during and post birth footage, plus an update of how Aleene and the calf are doing a week later.
    Thanks for watching!

that was awesome. I have seen birth many times before but not pulling. Our few wild cattle birth by themselves mostly and havent had any trouble. If there is, neighbors would give us a hand, we live in cattle country. they told us if we have to pull a calf, pull downward, but you pull straight out so looks like it doesn't matter which way to pull? We can pull but we don't know anything about using injections etc. We raise our own cattle and don't know much about medical intervention so that's when we would call neighbors.
Aileen is a beautiful dairy cow, her last years calf looks awesome. thank you for showing and talking about the birth process, it isn't easy at times I see!

Usually Aleene is an easy calver, this one was tough because of the milk fever and the big calf. When I stopped filming we did pull down and your friend is right, it does help a lot!

@@familyfarmlivestock4949 Oops, I missed that Aleene had milk fever already. we have been lucky there has been no milk fever here, is it more common in dairy cattle maybe? I am thinking of buying a dairy cow but has to be able to handle this cold weather, their coats are so thin....
Thank you for setting me straight for calf pulling. If the time ever arrives we need to pull one, we will pull down.
Look forward to seeing Aleene and calf again!

@@tallcedars2310 Milk fever is more likely in cows that are Jersey, older and/or over ideal weight. Aleene is all three! So her getting milk fever is not a surprise! She gets a winter coat but if no one in your area or an area with similar weather has any dairy cattle, I'd be cautious, for sure.

@@familyfarmlivestock4949 I hope the milk fever isn't a yearly thing for Aleene.
Since we don't have a barn and we are in zone 2/3 by the rockies I will take your advice and hold off on buying a dairy cow. Neighbors here have had them and they don't last long, just too hard a winters here maybe. Thanks for your sage advice!
