The ABA established the 3-point shot in the '60's, not the NBA in 1979.

Larry Birds game would have translated even better in the 3 points era now. When we left the 1980’s consensus was Magic was better. Not so much now. Magic had Kareem. Who is now being recognized as 1 of 3 best of all time. Plus Celtics had to deal with Dr. J’s 76ers. As the East was better than West in those days.

Dr J, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Maurice Cheeks and Bobby Jones. 5 Hofers in the mid 80s, still couldn't get past the Celtics after 83. The only reason Bird gets the edge over magic is his shooting range. Not just the distance, but the incredibly bad shots he took that went in. Off 1 foot, falling down, over the backboard. I saw him pass the basketball to himself off the backboard.
It's funny watching these clips. The announcers knew who the best was. Back in the day when they said thing like "Bird has the basketball, look out" "How many times does he drive that dagger through your heart with shots like that?" "Well, it's the 4th quarter now, so you know Larry is going to start making those pressure shots". We didn't think about it back in the day because it was like duh, it's Larry Bird doing legendary shit on a daily basis.

@@rogerahier4750 after 1983 and then adding Charles Barkley I thought 76ers had a few more Championships in them. Celtics 1984 raised their level so that did not happen. 1986 Celtics being greatest team of all time. Bird and Russell are being underrated thru time but they had a will that whatever era they were in they would still win championships. Hard to show intestinal fortitude on film. ( Jordan came into league 1984 did not get a sniff of championship till Celtics past their prime ).

What you talking about Willis? Bird was considered the better player although Showtime was considered the better team back then.
Today many people consider Magic better if they never saw them both play because Magic is still the best point guard to play. Today's fans think Bron is a better forward because they have never seen a whole game played by Bird.

@@marykuettner752 Mary what are you talking about? Do you know? Early 1990”s when they retired Magic had 5 Titles. Bird had 3. So Magic was consensus’s considered better. Now with time and perspective I see Bird as Better.

@@Righteous210Their argument falls apart because non-Hall of Fame players Ron Harper and Steven Kerr had 5 titles each while Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, Dominique Wilkins and Pete Maravich didn't have any rings.

Betting or daring Bird would just give him extra motivation. Not a good idea.

Sunday March 15, 1987. Bird shoots 13/19 for 35 points and 4/6 on 3s vs the Knicks. That has to be the game he’s referring to. But Ewing didn’t play and Bernard King was out almost the entire season and didn’t play that game either.

Did your father work at General Dynamics in the late 1970s early 80s? I remember a very tall man (and I am 6'3") that looks a lot like you and I think his badge had "Walton" as part of the name. I never met him, just fleeting glimpses in passing, but I always wondered.
