StarPlay: an original amiibo board game

- After some thought of how to use Nintendo's amiibo in a game of my own I came up with an electronic board game which uses the amiibo figures as interactive board pieces. For 2 to 4 players, the aim of the game is to collect the required number of star points and then land on the end square. The amiibo are registered so that players are referred to by their amiibo name and their winning stats are saved to each amiibo at the end of the game. As well as support for amiibo the game also features an LCD that explains how to play the game, and lights on every square so there can never any arguments as to what square someone should be on. As well as showing you the game in action I also detail the internals and go through the feedback from a play tester.

Honestly its a super good idea. I can imagine fantasy games like hero quest keeping track of your items and hit points and how far you moved. possibly even have a dice box to roll in so it reads the rolls. registers what monsters are placed etc. Or Atmosfear The Harbingers where it could keep track of your keystones and which powers you have, whos turn it is when the gatekeeper stops play etc. Just thinking out loud and applying the concept to some of my favorite retro board games. There is a lot of potential.
I would certainly like to revisit this concept so it's good to hear how you would imagine a similar board game could work.
I like this idea, I most like how you've integrated an Arduino/nfc module to make using amiibo worthwhile. Like, there is Nintendo themed Monopoly and you could just use amibo, but they'd be no different than the normal pieces.
But hear me out, take this concept and make a physical Mario party board.
The mini games can be like Cranium type games or like irl iterations of certain Mario Party games, however that'd translate.
As for the board actions like traps and '?' spaces, add the concept of that Mouse Trap board game. That train guy from the Peanut Panic board game could be used to recreate the wild west board too.
Thanks for your ideas and I would like to do that but I've also been thinking about SM64 style levels for the layout.
I won't have the chance to watch the whole presentation but I looks pretty cool so far! It looks like it would be fun to play!👍 Keep the great work James
Awesome mate. Enjoyed watching the game play out.
Cool proof of concept. Maybe for you next one you could put a screen in each corner of the screen to represent each character and their item status instead of displaying everything on one screen. Also what about making different routes and ? spaces to affect the outcome of the board?
That's some cool ideas but I definitely need a bigger box.
Awesome idea! Love your site and sm64 codes, btw
great concept, it seems interesting enough to keep your attention while simple enough for anyone to play. also the amiibo and led features make it eye catching.
Came here from a 2008 video
James is the best
Impressive build!
Hey James, glad to see more videos. If you have the game, can you please do a video of Zelda BOTW?
Sorry I don't have that game
I'm just glad you're not making lampshades out of human skin.
but it lights them inside the organs :v
amzingly wonderful😂
I was looking at your cheat codes for Mario 64 and was wondering if you could make one where enemies don't drop anything
