My 65 Mercury Comet was my dads first car in high-school and it originally had a 289 and he said it was pretty damn snappy. Old Ford's don't die

I clicked on about 10 of these things before settling on this one. All the others are unwatchable handheld cam shots. Here's a cool dude with just a trusty ol' tripod workin' on his car. Works for me.

Ignore the 289 at your own peril! When they are built, pretty snappy motors (in a lighter car). Great video!

Watching you look for smoke, wearing sunglasses, in the shade, of the engine bay, I started laughing, thinking about the dash going up in flames! I aporove and subscribed.

The Galaxie is a great car. That 289 is also a great and very peppy engine. One of my Favorite Ford cars.

I’m very excited about this one. I had almost the same car before I left for the army. I loved that old girl. That 289 is little, sure, but it sure hauled me around in a hurry.

Definitely expected it to be a lot worse but it’s not bad at all, scoots down the road just fine for as big of a car it is. Sure it would be way better with about 300 more hp under the hood but I’ll take what I can get lol

The scary thing is the wiring under the dash that is chewed up from the mice that you Don't see.😮

My buddy up in NYC has a 67 Fairlane.. it's got a FORD 427 (not 428) it was a Shelby build, i think one of like 28 or something.. it's a fast and hot car (runs at 220f holy cow!)

    Hello From Mark In KY.
Regarding the automatic choke, The heat tubes would indeed rot out pretty badly as you discovered once the engine had some years on it.
Speaking for myself, If the choke was the round black style within a housing on the side of the carburetor similar to the GM automatic chokes, You had to loosen the three screws with the tabs - While the engine was cold you could adjust the choke back just enough to slightly close the choke butterfly on the carburetor once you pushed down on the accelerator pedal., Once the engine started up and slightly warmed up,,the choke spring would fairly quickly open the choke butterfly if the choke spring was in reasonably good shape.
You may be able to open the holes up and make some new pieces of heat transfer tubes. If that automatic choke is similar to the older GM automatic chokes, You may be better off to install a manual choke kit rather than subject yourself to that headache. The 12volt electric chokes also worked pretty well if you could manage that for your carburetor. Good Luck with your Ford.

When I was 19 or so some older ladies that my uncle had worked for gave me a 1976 Buick Skylark sedan with an Olds 260 V8 and a TH200 Hydramatic that made 105 HP. Yeah, a 4.3L V8 made 105 HP. The ONLY way that it would do a burnout was if I would put a bunch of oil on the tires. Edit: It only had 34k miles on it too. It still had the original tires and it was shit brown with an all brown interior. It was ugly af.

This is just about what I hope to find here after I get the family vehicles caught up on all the deferred maintenances...something mid 60s, 4 door post, ideally a '65-66 Biscayne or Bel Air with a straight six and column manual, but it doesn't matter overall, just something older than me and without any power options or fancy bits. Can't believe how good the interior looks though.

Back in the day......... the automakers got great performance and horsepower out of the smaller V8 motors. 327 Chevy, 288/302 Ford, 318 Poly, Dodge/Plymouth.
it was a modular motor but Jeep had a 4.7 v8 H.O. motor that had lots of horsepower.

She runs good enough to maybe think about doing some frame repair before it goes away from these Northern winters.

    • @wrenchin-redneck
      @wrenchin-redneck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The frame definitely isn’t as bad as I was thinking. A simple 10” plate on the bottom side near the front will fix it. The rest of the frame is perfect.

The 289 and 1966 was I think 200 horsepower with the two barrel carburetor. Depending on your final drive ratio those cars ran good. How does 66 Fairlane 289 c4 Auto. Gas mileage was nothing to write home about but good reliable transportation.
