The smith is very skilled. Whoever is doing the subtitles needs to study up a bit.. The stump is not repurposed as an anvil-it is an anvil stand. The anvil is steel..-As a smith with 60 years experience the most amazing thing to me is his ability to do all that forging and still have a clean shirt. I walk into my shop and my shirt is instantly black.. Great video.

Thanks a lot. 😊😊😉😉......but...I'm really sorry. It was because of me (the videographer). I asked this great master to make a sickle for the thin grass in my small garden at home, very quickly, so that I could film it in the short time I had with him. And of course, it shouldn't be too expensive, because I might only use it once. The master insisted on giving me the tool that is at minute 1:20, but I refused and said that I wanted a tool that I could film in this short time. And the result was that many people criticized the master's work in the comments. But it was my fault. I will soon go to this great master and film one of his wonderful works. 😔😔🙏🙏

People being overly spergy and critical, you don't need very high carbon steel for a sickle/scythe. Ranges vary, but .6 to .7 will do fine. Rebar varies as well, but is most like mild steel, so the low carbon end admittedly. However, considering you'll be swathing with it and not chopping wood or hammering, I think these sickles will do just fine.
The only way this person gets properly compensated for the craft is , if he stamps a Tiffany logo on it followed by auctioning at Sotheby's New York ! Eric Adams says he got five on it !

Merci pour votre suggestion. Absolutely true, my friend. I saw that for heavy work and thick branches, much stronger and springier alloys were used. But this example was made for a small space and little grass, because the person who ordered this work had very little grass. And since the stronger alloy cost him several times more, he did not want it. Please also watch the end of the video to see how this scythe worked. Thank you for your attention.🌹🌹

@@asdertrender7555 if you do just a little bit of research you will find new rebar goes for approximately $3-7 for a 10ft stick while a scrap yard will charge you around $25-40 for a coil spring. Also used coil springs can be rather dangerous to work with do to the stress they are put through which can cause micro fractures and cracks that will ruin the work you put in to making the blade so most bladesmiths opt for buying new spring steel from a distributor which will usually run you approximately $10-55 per piece depending on size/weight of course...

0.6-0.7 is high carbon. Rebar is usually much lower (though it depends on the grade). But as you said you don't need high carbon for hand scythes.

I thought you cant harden regarding because it's mild steel?
depends on what grade it is 40 is A36 and not hardenable, Grades 60, 80, and 100 are equivalent to roughly 1045, 1060, and 1070 and can be hardened.
PHC- this is mild steel, can you do high carbon steel?
