I have been watching BYU since Jim McMahon. So I've seen a lot of BYU's performances. But the current BYU team is different. This is a very solid team. I think they will perform very consistent. They have strength, determination, aggressiveness, and toughness. I think they are legitimate contenders for the Big 12 title.
Excellent point. That 6 minutes doesn't happen again in another hundred games. But holding opponents under 20 points? The defense has shown it can do that regularly.
I hear you on the offense, but dang, they didn't hardly need to do any work Saturday night. That was such a dominant performance from the whole team that I that I have a hard time qualifying the win. I'm bought in. GO COUGARS!!!
49.5% of available yards! Thats roughly the equivalent of Bama's offense. It's not the offense's fault that they got a bunch of short fields to work with.
For how loud the BYU crowd can get I think back to BYU vs Air Force. The crowd was so loud they got hit with unsportsmanlike conduct multiple times while the defense was backed up against the end zone. It was so bad the ref looked at the Air Force QB and shrugged. They couldn’t split the distance to the goal and the defense held. The crowd erupted. It was amazing to be there and be part of the crowd
I think it’s too early to label any team in the big 12 a contender other than Utah (with Rising) every other team is a bit of a question mark and something we can say for a certain who is a contender until week 6
@@bigkahuna6618 Utah has a better roster with a seasoned quarterback (when healthy) who has proven himself to be a Heisman contender. BYU has a lot of unknowns still especially with how they folded last season. I like what I’m seeing but it’s still too early to call.
BYU fans really like Baylor and root for generally do root for the Bears when not playing the Cougs; Vegas says Baylor is slightly favored in this one? I’m gonna take these odds and make $!!!
Great win for byu. Absolutely need to remind byu fans not to get over their skis here…. That’s the first good team we have played this season. All of our tough games are still ahead. I’d be shocked if byu was above .500 on their remaining games
I'm not ready to declare BYU a contender. I've been hurt too many times in the past after a huge BYU win just to follow up with a big goose egg the following week. I remember back in '18 BYU upset #6 Wisconsin on the road early in the season then proceeded to go 7-5. BYU's defense sure looks legit, but still some question marks on offense.
BYU can go 7-0 and then would likely hit the drop off. Well placed bye week. OK state is at home at 8:30pm if AZ is a late slot as well??? Definitely possible. But can we make it through AZ and OK state healthy? Probably not.
The flukes were that the ball bounced the right way for Prassas and Kingston. The flukes were NOT that K-State turned the ball over. BYU’s defense is for real. Also, while I remain cautiously optimistic the offense is improving, they can’t be held liable for the D giving them short fields They gained the yards available to them needed to score whereas last year they did not.
Each week you prep for the “up next” the new obstacle in your way. Keep what is working, purge what did not work, then bring the WOOD and punish the next up.
Jake is giving the defense way too much credit. They forced 1 punt all game. The offense only had 1 3 and out, the offense showed great efficiency in what it was given. Defense is one Jack Kelly ankle sprain away from being completely unable to stop the run. Has the depth to be great against the pass all season. Offense has made great progress considering the injuries to RBs. Jake won’t complement Retzlaff but he has made significant strides as well. BYU has a good almost great defense and an under rated offense. Ultimately the cougars downfall will be as usual depth. Progressing through the big 12 schedule healthy is next to impossible.
I agree that the offense has a lot of tools that may make it very good as it comes together. The key stat for the defense is allowing no touchdowns. All other things aside, a defense that keeps the opponent out of the endzone is an effective defense.
@@samuelrussell5760 You are absolutely correct. It’s the most important stat and like you said most effective. Unfortunately it’s not sustainable if the defense is running 70+ plays again to the offenses 40. Offense and defense have = responsibility for TOP. Offense butchered the first possession. Fault to them. However the second was 10 plays that ended in a punt that downed KS at the 6. This is a good possession. Defense gave up 12 play and 16 play scoring drives. And only the offense has been criticized for the first 4 possessions of the game (other then kalani rightfully calling out the defense for not getting off the field) So you’re right. But this is a 12 game season and with such a tilted TOP the defense would eventually succumb to wear and tear and become ineffective. That’s why everything else aside actually does matter.

BYU didn't just win the game in 6 minutes. They kept Kansas State out of the endzone for 60 minutes. That's not a fluke.
Preach it, friend! And that's the second time this season they've done that.
