Thanks to all the requests, I am back to the DMC franchise to review Devil May Cry 4, and DmC: Devil May Cry! A game I love and a game I had never played before the making of this video. How are the last two games in the franchise before DMC5? Well, watch and find out.

DMC4 feels like it was rushed because it actually was rushed. Capcom hit the dev team with a deadline that forced them to cut out a lot of the story and an entire unique campaign for Dante among other things.

Capcom was going through a wierd phase at the time. CoD was crazy big and still growing, Capcom wanted that kind of money and didn't all kinds of things to get it. In 2008, after the closing of Clover (the original Platinum owned by Capcom), Capcom sworn in Keiji Inafune, the father of Megaman. To make more money off of the west (that's us) he began a westernazation initiative which included buying, contracting, and rebranding everything to be more appealing to the west.
In the process Inafune made RE5 and 6 what they were, bought and funded a bunch of small western Devs, and contracted Ninja Theory to make a DMC not to long after development for Dragon's Dogma began development.
Considering his plans he likely had a hand DMC 4 being cut back because it was super Japanese and didn't fit his image of what Capcom could have been. Also he wasn't the reason for DmC being like it was just that it exists, he was fired or something in 2010 not to long after the reveal of DmC.

DMC4 was going to have over 20 missions I believe. Also in the mid to late 2000’s Capcom kept piling the market with Megaman games without any of the fan base room to grow because no one can catch up with all the games coming out at once thus sales numbers kept decreasing, which lead me to believe it affected other games too at the time. But recently Capcom are redeeming themselves by pumping out amazing games now, Megaman 11, RE2 Remake and soon DMC5.

So fun fact, Kyrie is supposed to mirror Eva, Vergil and Dante's mother, in terms of Nero's journey to not become another Vergil.
What they were trying to do is get across the idea that Nero is somewhat power hungry, like Vergil. But Vergil's true hunger didn't wake up until after Eva died, and had Kyrie died, Nero would have become another Vergil. The idea is that Nero has to do what Vergil didn't, save the person he cared about so that he didn't go mad hating the weakness of humanity.
    It's crazy, but that's facts.

DMC3 has an entire room that is dedicated to platforming in the later levels.

Notice you didn’t mention or use Nero’s real way of charging his Exceed gauge when he uses the button while slashing. This mechanic actually drastically changes the playstyle of the character, and makes him more based on skill, since the real challenge of Nero is keeping that Exceed meter good at all times through charging it through your slashes. I really think you learning this mechanic more and seeing how it works could really change your view on Neros combat since it is such a deep mechanic and makes Nero way more fun to play when you get it down. Also Nero’s level 3 charge shot is really broken, does tons of damage and gives tons of style.

Vergil definitely cared about his brother, as his only family member, Dante was the only one that could’ve reasoned with him. But no, he straight up tries to kill him, *HIS BROTHER THAT PLAYED WITH HIM HIS ENTIRE CHILDHOOD AND HAS RETURNED DOING NOTHING BUT HELPING HIM IN EVERY SITUATION*. And he was only stopped because Kat stopped him, killing is apparently easier then talking to this asshole we call Dante.
Want a Dante vs Vergil fight that badly? Here’s an idea for your epic confrontation. Remember when Vergil was swallowed by Mundus? In the original game, it only exists to serve as an excuse why he couldn’t fight Mundus with Dante. So in this version, he’s gonna come out brainwashed, a good nod to DMC1 where the exact same thing happened. Dante helps Vergil break free from the mind control but roughing him up a bit in the process. The two then have a climactic showdown against Mundus together and roll credits. And literally 25% of people’s complaints would be gone.

Any sort of description the story could have had besides 'generic AF' got curb stomped when the series became more about the developers jerking off to their pathetically fleshed out husbandos and body pillow waifus by making them do "cool stuff" than actually making continuations that aren't poorly told dumpster fires.
Who is the woman Sparda sacrificed?
This is quickly swept under the rug 'cause their characters looking cool is more important than paying off a potential plot thread
      Why did he sacrifice her?
See previous point. Again, could have led to an interesting reveal but I guess not
Why am I expected to care about anything that happens in the world the characters inhabit when the games can't be bothered to spend any amount of time fleshing either out?

I'm not even saying you had to like the game but I do feel like you ignored alot of this game's details with no attempt at giving it a fair shot which is made even more dissappointing by the fact that devil may cry 3 got a more detailed analysis and a hero's journey arc comparison even though this version of dante is alot like his one from 3.
      For example:
DMC3 and DmC Dante both do not care about whatever their brothers have going on an refuse to deal with them inititally. DmC Dante just has it rougher because his memory was wiped and he's been on the run killing demons ever since with no real idea why which is also WHY he's so unlikable at the start of the game he's supposed to be he's constantly hunted with no clue why.
It's also like his DMC1 instantly motivated stop mundus after remembering his mother, his brother and his family mundus took from him.
Again like his DMC3 counterpart he doesn't not care about anyone else really and is only really in it for himself up until a woman changes his mind and begins to do it because it's the right thing to do with lady it was learning about her father, with kat it was seeing her get kindnapped and realizing all those people died and kat could die trying to fight against the demons and he had been a jerk to them the whole game.
Vergil and Dante's battle might be different than it was in 3 but it's also similar. Vergil in DMC3 wants power because he was too weak to protect his mom thinks he can't protect people without being the strongest most ruthless demon he can be and DmC Vergil (who couldn't reveal his powers to mundus till the ambush by the way) wants power because he believes humans are weak cant protect themselves or run free without killing each other and going beserk (something mundus explains before the fight) but also doesn't want to be ruthless and hurtful to them either. Both vergils only battle dante due to being hurt he wont join them and both dante's have graduated to only fighting vergil at the end because they dont have any other option and are hurt when vergil abandons them for beating him at the end.
To ask if there are people that like this game and dante was childish imo. Of course there are. Research would tell you even the director of DMC3 and 4 has stated HE liked it so much he wanted to to do a sequel to DmC but changed his mind because he didnt want to do it without ninja theory. Which is why Dante has had DmC's colors for alt outfit for DMC4 and DMC5 and alot of it's influence on DMC5 is obvious. He is a HUGE fan of the reboot

I found myself being disappointed with the DMC4 special edition. The fact that it came after the DmC remaster, which fixed a lot of the issues that game initially had on the older consoles, I was expecting the same with DMC4. Yet we didn't get that. Quite the opposite. With 3 new characters running through the same campaign (which is essentially the campaign played twice, just the 2nd time in reverse) it really makes the blemish rushed nature of the game stand out even more.
I was hoping that the new characters would get their own levels. It didn't have to be 20 missions long, maybe just 5 or 6, letting us know what Vergil did in the past and what Trish and Lady were doing while Dante was demon slaying and saving Nero. But the fact that you run through the same game just for a new cutscene, and only one, makes things so tedious. I get that the devs did the exact same thing in DMC3 with Vergil but in that case, the new release was actually a Greatest Hits title, and it felt novel because usually Greatest Hits was the exact same game, just at a lower price. This one was a special edition port, coming out after the special edition port of DmC, which actually made an effort to improve a lot of the blemishes impacting the original release of the game. So...it's just kind of disappointing.
Maybe I wouldn't have been so negative towards the re-release if DMC4's port came out prior to DmC, so the expectation of fixes wouldn't have been so firmly planted in my mind.

DMC4 is just one of those games where when you get a grasp on the deeper mechanics, it just becomes a cathartic joyride of endless combos. If you really like it but can’t get that grasp then I would recommend looking up the combat tutorials for at least Dante and Nero. It’s a literal game changer. I started out sucking about 4 years ago but now I’m at a fairly high level and I’ve gotten every achievement to boot. Even beating Dante with SSS on DMD mode. You should just give it more time to process. It just might become your favorite Devil May Cry game like it is mine.
As for DmC... I hate to love it since it breaks its own rules to become “harder” on the higher difficulties. Some mechanics just don’t function they way you’ve been taught. Plus the color choices clash a lot and cause me to fuck up from time to time (I’m looking at you Devils Dalliance). But nonetheless, it is a great game, It just has too many problems that can’t be ignored (color coded enemies) But it’s still a worthwhile experience.
I always wanted DMC5 from the time I finished DMC4 but I wouldn’t have been mad with a DmC2 if they fixed all of the major problems players had. But let’s be real... the original DMC canon deserved a dignified conclusion. This was the best choice IMO.

  • @MProductionsGAMING
    @MProductionsGAMING 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great video J! But I gotta point out a couple things in your video:
*>* Yes you are most definitely right about the game being rushed. There were ideas and concepts about Dante travelling into areas of the underworld, and receiving his weapons by defeating demon bosses (by the same names of the weapons you get in DMC4) just like in DMC3, instead of simply getting them handed to him right before destroying each hell gate. Obvously, due to time constraints, none of these story aspects made it into the game.
*>* 21:12 To be fair, every game in the DMC series (don't know about 5 yet) had platforming sections in it too. I assume the devs did this to shake up gameplay, and prevent things from getting too repetitive. Speaking more on platforming:
*>* Platforming in DmC: DMC and DMC 2 is actually the *best* in the entire series (again, not including DMC5 as the game hasn't come out yet). You have better control in the air compared to DMC 1, 3, and 4. In 1, 3, and 4, jumping is so rigid. And although this helps in combat to move around quickly (and not be vulnerable to enemy attacks for too long), for platforming though, it's a recipe for disaster. (I.E. Try platforming on the broken bridge without falling on your first try in DMC 1, or climb the rotating cubes in DMC 3 without failing).
*>* I understand not knowing this, since it's your first time getting into DMC4, but even though Nero doesn't get new weapons like Dante, he's actually more intricate than you think. Not even counting the abilities for your arm (since the shield is the only combat-oriented arm upgrade), for example: when Nero grabs staggered/weakened bosses while in DT, Nero does different and more brutal attacks for more damage. You can even interact with Nero's animation by jumping in and out of DT, revving your sword while Nero has it stabbed into a boss, and shooting summoned swords by using the shoot button (must be in DT during the boss attack animation ofc), and even continuously pressing the O/B (PS4/Xbox) button to make Nero do extra punches, smashing, swinging, etc. (These points also apply to grabbing regular enemies with the Devil Bringer).
If Nero stayed exactly like this in DMC5 (and ofc we know he doesn't), *then* it would be a problem with making his gameplay repetitive.
*>* Nero's Blue Rose is actually one of his most powerful weapons when upgraded to its maximum. His Level 3 charge shot can deal serious damage, and even insta-kill some enemies (depending on your difficulty level).
    *A few Nitpicks:*
*>* In regards to what you said at 6:20, you could damage enemies by activating your DT in DMC3 as well. In DMC3, you just had to hold the L1 button. The higher your DT gauge means the longer you can charge it. The more charge you had, the more damage you'd do to enemies when you finally activate the trigger.
*>* Also, it's a good thing you played the remasters of both games because you luckily avoided issues ( *serious* issues in DmC's case) with the original games. Like in DMC4, making your character run fast was an upgrade you had to buy, and even when you bought it, you had to run in the same direction for several seconds before you could burst into high speed (making it tedious to travel through these large areas). And for DmC, in the original, when it came to damaging color-coded enemies, you couldn't even do a smidge of damage to them if you didn't attack with the right colored-weapons (though I think these enemies should've just been thrown out entirely imo). Also, there was no lock-on in the original DmC, so both L1 and R1 did the same thing. One the biggest issues was the fact that when activating you DT in that game, all enemies would be sent floating in the air. So the only way you could hurt them was by jumping up to them and doing air combos. Thankfully, that mechanic was removed, and DT was made to work the same way it works in all the canonical DMC games.

Nero gets a little lack lustery...if you yourself play lack lustery.
DMC4 introduces probably the most stylized combo system in all of the DMCs provided you can learn the mechanics like how inertia works, and even then you don't have to be super advanced level to be pulling some sick looking stuff; look up any one combo mad and you can see for yourself just how 'stale' playing any one of these characters can be.
Blue rose isn't for damage really, its utility for juggling or charge shot setups, but casual players wont make very good use of it.
Also Ex-act and max-act are a thing. Yknow, that thing that rewards skill based timing.

Ninja Theory actually wanted to be more in line with what fans expected from the series. Every time they gave Capcom something to work they had done Capcom would just say "No, change it."
DMC's cringe writing and characters is not Ninja Theorys fault. These choices were made by Capcom. Some of Ninja Theorys early designs and concepts for the game ACTUALLY looked pretty promesing.

19:27 If you don't think Dante went through an arc in DmC Devil May Cry you just weren't paying attention.
Dante Begins the game as a selfish prick who doesn't care about anything except himself. Dante meets Kat and Vergil and is reluctant to help them until Vergil promises to reveal Dante's past during which Dante makes some inappropriate jokes and generally act like a prick. After he discovers what happened to his parents he agrees to help for the sake of revenge. Shortly thereafter he discovers that he enjoys working with people and begins to open up to Kat. This leads him to want to know more about her and so he tries to get her to open up to him. She reluctantly shares with him her traumatic childhood involving demons which strengthens Dante's resolve to help them as well as the sense of camaraderie Dante feels. His motivations are becoming less selfish. During the next mission when Vergil reveals that cat can't help him Dante replies with "That's fine. She's done more than enough." showing that he's becoming substantially less of a disrespectful prick. During this Mission he meets Phineas whom he is very apprehensive because of the fact that he is a demon. However Dante is soon taken off guard by phineas's calm, collected and polite attitude. Phineas teaches Dante that things aren't always as they appear as well as teaching him that there might be unforeseen consequences of his actions and things might not turn out as he's expecting. After Dante kills Bob Kat is captured by the enemy. Vergil wants to abandon her while Dante insists on saving her. this shows that Dante's motivations are no longer selfish and that there's a rift forming between Vergil and Dante. Dante captures Mundus's mistress Lilith who is pregnant with his child in order to use her as a bargaining chip. During the hostage exchange Vergil acts on impulse and kills Lilith and her unborn child. This causes Mundus to fly into a furious rage killing hundreds of people. While Dante is remorseful over the devastation that Mundus has caused Vergil is cold and uncaring. After defeating Mundus Vergil reveals his true intentions. Dante decides to sacrifice his relationship with his brother for the sake of humanity.
Dante at the end of the game is a completely different person From who he was at the beginning of the game. That's called a character Arc. Whether or not you enjoyed the story you can't deny that Dante went through a clear and defined ark.

Hey J, I've been watching your reviews for ages now. And when it came to this one I was really excited to hear what you thought about DMC: Devil May Cry.
Leading up to the game release, I had only ever seen people playing the Devil May Cry series, and while the action and gameplay looked fun, I never got into it. So when DMC was released, I didn't even bother picking it up. The first time I played it, the game was a free download on PS plus I believe. I downloaded it expecting to turn it off, but rather, I found myself enjoying it. Everything about the story, action and gameplay sucked me in. I was hooked on it. Mind you, I have no idea about the story of the previous games in the series.
It wasn't until I looked into things that I realised people actually hated DMC to the point, I couldn't understand why. I get it rebooted the series and changed the character, but the gameplay was key. Anyway, since initially playing and completing on PS3, I picked it up on PS4 and Xbox One. I liked the game that much.

I know others have mentioned it, but Nero has some stuff you missed. There's the obvious stuff such as ex-act and max-act, but beyond that, there's the additional stuff like DT exclusive moves, Nero's dodge mechanics being different from Dante (Shuffle and Table Hopper), and the Devil Bringer's counter mechanics. There's actually quite a few attacks Nero can counter or reverse with it. The obvious one being the lances in the Credo fight, but you can actually counter Dante's Stinger with it, the lizard aerial attacks, the orb shot from Alto Angelo (though you have a few other options for this specific one), the sword enemies in mid flight, and the bianco angelo's shield parry (if you trigger it with your sword). Its main variety and use in general play is using it as a counter in much the same way Dante uses Royal Guard. Deliberately baiting more defensive enemies into a position where you can grab them, or performing setups with it feels great. Alto Angelo in particular can actually be grabbed without the shield being broken if you do the proper setup for it.

-In Dmc4 I spent a lot of time using Credo's Shield with Nero and actualy was very usefull against some hordes of enemies and for taking a more defensive style of combat.
-In Dmc Devil may cry the Demon Dodge of Dante is a very Op thing, allowing you to deal a significant amount of damage against enemies and can be very usefull for getting Rank SSS in your combos in combination with the demonic Axe

I am never going to forget that video of the E3 2012 DmC demo. The poor quality inherent to hand cameras in the early 2010s could not mask what I saw. The player completed 1 demon dodge, switched on Devil Trigger, and started spamming the Axe. Within 2-3 hits he had a SSS rating. It was depressing and insulting at the same time. Getting S in DMC 1 was tough but in 3 SSS was way harder. It's been years since I last played it but if I was to pick it up again I could show you the exact spot I got my first ever SSS rank. The experience left that much of an impression on me.

Yup, I remember people talking about how the style system was tweaked for the retail release. The main talking point was how you had to double demon dodge before whipping out the Axe to get an instant high style rating. It was also hard capped to SS but that didn't mean much since covering the last leg of a SSS rating was easy when you had every other combo you could choose from as you only needed a basic Axe combo to take off. All that aside next to nothing was done to address the massive damage that this sequence did. Bosses would have their strength halved and all enemies would fall before the almighty Axe. But you won't face only low level peons, you also face those sneaky statues, those Fallens, those Wraths, Greeds, Blood Gore wasn't as easy as those DmC enemies. The only DmC enemies that was any kind of interesting was Dream Runner. But then they are basically bootleg Hell Vanguard. I never felt any challenge against them even if I started the game with the highest difficulty available at the start. The result screen on DMC3 reflected how well you performed and it was rightfully so. DMC3 had some abusive mechanic BUT you had to be a master to do that. the blue rose charge shot at level 3 not only is really fun and allows you to taunt as an enemy is about to die, but it also allows you to deal with Blitz MUCH more easily if you have some foresight. Charge up to level 3 beforehand, shoot him, then a level 2 charge shot will get him out of his electric armor. If you play your cards right, you can easily get a perfect no hit encounter against him with that set-up, and using nero's grab attacks gives you ample time to charge up another level 3. And for even MORE fun, you can change the gun button for Nero to R2 so you can continually charge the gun during even the most intense of combat encounters

Or at least, that's how it was supposed to work. I remember that being the case in definitive edition but maybe there was an update patch that switched it? I don't know who wrote the characters, but blacklist the guy from writing again, since they can't write a character. Basically, I like the story, but not the characters driving it.
As far as gameplay goes, I thought it was good, but I won't argue on the colored enemies thing. Despite having a lesser moveset, there is plenty to work with. My only issue you haven't brought up is switching Angel and Demon weapons. Using the triggers never bothered me because I have more than two fingers, but what my issue was changing the weapons. If I wanted to change the Angel weapon, I'd have to awkwardly hit left on the D-pad.
As far as DMC4 goes (played original and SE, but mostly SE) I found everything so much fun that I didn't even really mind doing the same missions. Except for mission 3 with its platform pulling thing. The one with spikes on the ceiling and if you fall, you have to fight a wave of enemies. Anyone comparing these two Dante's don't understand the fact that original Dante had 4 different games to develop while the reboot only had 1 and they expected a sequel. We'll never know how he would've ended up and for all we do know he might have ended up like the Dante we know now he already had white hair by the end of the game. In conclusion most people who approached it with an open mind were curious where they'd go next with the series and I think it sucks that we lost a whole new universe and take on Devil May Cry because of the toxic fanbase.

DMC had to go though 2 games before 3 made it combat the thing it is now. Compared to the reboot which only had 1 game and had already nailed it's combat while trying to differ from the original. Remember it's suppose to be a reboot. A REBOOT discards continuity to re-create its characters, plotlines and backstory from the beginning. So just imagine what a sequel could have improved. Such a big shame that this gem is lost now.
It was not broken, buggy, heck it was a complete package compared to some modern games. I wonder if after DMC2 got shit so bad and 3 was not made. Regarding to what tameem saying his dante was better, so what? I'm a long time fan of this series been playing since i was 10 and i never cared if anyone says dante is this or that because at the end of the day, someone will not like the character and that's fine. However, those criticism really got no respect from me when people was making a big thing out of the infamous hair joke couple with the death threats. Even if we are comparing the reboot with main series, It is still a devil may cry game and it shines over most of them. I dare say it is miles better than 4 as an overall game. Overall, people just never want to give it a chance.
apologies for the late as hell reply, just wanted to share my perspective on what you said. Even years after DMC 5, people still think the reboot would be better if its not DMC and that's just bullshit. The core of the series is always to be stylish and it took it out of the park.

Anyhow, I was still very hyped for SE when it was announced despite this. Vergil and Lady are really fun to play as with Trish being okay. It's worth it in my book. Bloody Palace is even more fun now having a whole slew of characters to choose from and giving the campaign another two goes with the new characters makes it fun again.
In my opinion your doing yourself a a great disservice not playing the extra content in DMC 3 & 4. The SE's of DMC are like icing on the cake. I wish you would've touched upon the new character's a bit more at least (Vergil's overpowered in 4).

One thing I want to say about the DmC reboot in comparison to past titles is just how unrestricted using weapons and switching between them felt. I find this ironic because for a series founded on the idea of stylishly slaying demons, every single DMC game up until the reboot had restricted this philosophy severely in some way.
In DMC1, you couldn't switch your guns on the fly, you had to go to the menu to do that, and you could only switch between Alastor in Ifrit while on the ground after Dante does some animation. On top of that Ifrit was the only other melee weapon you had that wasn't a sword while all the others were and shared the same exact moveset.
In DMC2, you could switch between your guns in a linear sequence, but Dante only had one melee weapon type that didn't offer much in terms of moves and style, especially with how stinger was downgraded from DMC1.
In DMC3, Dante gets a massive upgrade in terms of both guns and melee weapons, but you could only hold two of each at a time, and the style system severely limited your moveset, especially when guns have only one attack with the rest of their movesets locked behind gunslinger (Including the charge shots) and a good chunk melee weapon attacks locked behind Swordmaster. For me I never found myself using any of the other styles as much as I used Swordmaster and Gunslinger for those reasons.
In DMC4, while Dante does get on the fly style switching, his weapons, save for his guns, are rather slow to use, with not much variety offered on the aerial attacks side of things. While you can pull of crazy aerial combos in DMC4 with Dante to be sure, I don't think DMC4 really offers Dante much room to experiment in that regard due to how slow his weapons can be (Unless you use Turbo Mode, which was only available on PC until SE came out) and Dark Slayer not only made style switching clunky since you can switch to accidentally when you didn't want to, but it severely limited what moveset Dante could've had with Yamato, on top of getting to use it for the first time during the savior fight. One thing that a lot of DMC4 players don't bother to criticize is the fact that you can't customize your loadout unlike in DMC3 and DMC5, which puts on a damper on player expression.
But then DmC comes along and says "Screw all that, we are making these weapons fast, quick to access, and give players an incentive to experiment with them".
You can switch between any of Dante's main five melee weapons on the fly via the normal, angel, and demon states, including mid-combo, rather than have to go through a linear sequence like how you do in DMC4 with Rebellion > Gilgamesh > Lucifer and having to start over your move count from there.
Moves like Round Trip and Drive/Overdrive, which took at least 3-10 seconds to charge up and use in past games and even in DMC5, are instant in the reboot, giving you more incentive to use them in combos even if at the cost of a lower skill ceiling, and unlike Nero's grapple ability which either pulls Nero towards a demon or vice versa depending on the demon in question, Dante's Angel/Demon pull can be used to the same thing depending on whether or not he's in angel or demon mode which can be used to create creative combos.
Unfortunately the same thing doesn't apply to the guns though, especially since Klabooey is essentially Lucifer just as a gun and without the charm, I think we should've just had a secondary normal weapon to use alongside Rebellion like with Aquila/Osiris and Onyx/Arbiter instead.
But one thing I do like about E&I and shotgun in DmC that I wished DMC5 adapted was their charge up move, in classic DMC and DMC5 it's always just the same attacks but better, but in DmC it's literally classic Dante's iconic Jackpot shot for E&I but made into a ricochet move you can actually pull off in the game, with Revenant, Dante's shotgun, getting Nero's color up move, and they're especially useful when you realize it can disable an enemy's DT state on DMD and get Rages out of their rage state using them.
I think DMC5 however, to some extent, managed to accomplish a technical middle ground between the combo potential of DMC4 and the unrestricted feeling of DmC. One thing I hope DMC6 finally puts in though is a DOOM 2016/Eternal-style weapon wheel for the weapons, that way you can cycle through the weapons in a linear matter as usual, while also having the ability to switch to any other weapon any time you want to if you hold down their buttons.
I'm also ashamed you didn't talk about the cool level design of DmC and the unique idea of having the very world itself be something trying to kill you.

I felt like Dante was shady at first in this game to be honest. Like, he could do some nasty shit if he wanted, if he hadnt done some ALREADY.
But i like it. I liked the graffiti-esc. grungy art style and Dantes immature attitude

I share a lot of your sentiments regarding DMC (reboot). However, I recognize that they went for a 90's teen drama type of atmosphere, and so I think the cheesy, cringy, whatever style of aesthetics and dialogue delivery the game possesses, is fitting for what their intention was. I loved Buffy, the vampire slayer as a kid, as well as the spinoff show, Angel. They haven't aged well, but a lot of people still love that type of show, despite sharing a lot of elements with the DMC reboot.
It's not for everyone, and I don't appreciate it half as much as I used to, but to some people, that's right up their alley. Unfortunately for Konami and Ninja Theory, the long-time fans, which make up the majority of their consumers, didn't appreciate this sudden shift to a different style and something they didn't reconize as a legitimate successor to the series. I think DMC would have seen more commercial succes, if it had been released under a different name. I've talked to a few people who I think would've liked the style that DMC went for, not to mention how it catered to a more casual audience, but they didn't purchase the game because they weren't fans of the more traditional, Devil May Cry experience. The DMC reboot was neither here, nor there, and that's where they went wrong.

Awwww man you missed Virgin's downfall Story DLC...it was actually a bit better and more interesting than the actual DMC story itself.
While I admit while DMC is stupid with donte and virgin being all cringy and all...it is a really fun game to play and I did had tons of fun in it...to a point I am hoping to see a DMC 2.
who knows it could become more better and it be like Devil may cry 3 of DMC just like how DMC is Devil may cry 2 of the series.
Love your videos man...ever since I saw your DMC review video.i think you are the right DMC...hell all of the action games reviewer.
Have you played the Yakuza series ?..you should definitely play it and review it.it deserves a lot of attention and it's by far the most underrated game series of all time.

Honestly, DmC is a technically superior game to DMC4 which was unfinished and unbalanced. Vergil's Downfall was some of the best storytelling in the entire series as well, paralleling a lot of elements from Paradise Lost. Vergil was basically Lucifer from that story, falling from paradise (both figuratively and literally since their old mansion had "paradise" written on its gates).

DmC is my favorite game in the series and one of my favorite beat 'em ups.
Even lack of lock-on didn't bother me, because I like crowd control more than focusing on one enemy. I also like platforming and holding buttons for weapon change, I find it useful for multi-weapon combos without being confused what I have.

I’m curious if you’d enjoy the Kingdom Hearts series it’s an action RPG with hack and slash elements. However unless you are playing on a higher difficulty you don’t really need to grind. And even then I mainly grinded as a security blanket there are people who can beat the superbosses on the highest difficulty at level 1 (there’s an option to disable exp). I think it would be a good way to ease you into more RPGs though I’d say the chances of you enjoying the story (which takes up a good portion of the series) is 50/50

YuriNoirProductions completely shit on the characters in every way, disrespected the fan base, the devs made homophobic slurs and tried to pass it off as a selling point. AWFUL dialogue, “The world is at last your bitch, now bend it over and fuck it”. The gameplay is a downgrade, reducing it to color coded enemies, no lock on, and overall just making it way too easy. The story isn’t good, at all, it’s clumsy and every single character is idiotic and edgy just for the sake of it. Color coded hooks and mediocre platforming. The bosses were alright at least. It showed in the sales, they were expecting 2 million and then just barely reached 1.2 million by the time the year ended. All these years later it just now hit its point. It’s the worst selling game in the series for a reason, with its awful treatment of old school fans to just destroying every single character and reducing them to edgy trailer trash, it had decent but pretty braindead gameplay, and its story wasn’t gonna grip anyone. If it was not DMC, I wouldn’t have any problem with it, but since it tries to pass itself off as a DMC game I am EXTREMELY disappointed in how it turned out. They’re making DMC5 and not DmC 2 for obvious reason, that’s all I’m saying.

I never complained about the changed hair color, I said the devs snapped back at the fans which they did. But a gross lie is that I have been avoiding DmC for years. I haven’t been a fan of Devil May Cry for a single year let alone years. I bought DmC a few months ago but was busy making other videos so I didn’t get a chance to play it until this video.

    • @decadentgamer3108
      @decadentgamer3108 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's such a cop out. Maybe he just didn't genuinely like it? That game is polarizing for a reason, you either love it or you hate (or "meh" it) but when you take a look at all the games J has played in his library, it's not surprising why he didn't enjoy DMC as much as others and as someone who thought the game was mediocre with a horrid story, characters & acting as well, it's not surprising that others didn't enjoy it. Pretty much EXSeraph mentioned all the things that were both wrong with this reboot and the pettiness that the developers exhibited upon the criticism they were getting with this game. The game was just try-hard and not in a good way.
I'll say this though. Had this game been its entirely own new game franchise starting out that had no ties to the Devil May Cry game but called something like... I don't know.. Heaven & Hell, a game inspired by Devil May Cry and the character was not Dante but... I dunno... Keith(?) starting his own journey and story to unfold, the game would've been better received because it wasn't dragging down a respected game franchise through the mud.

You'd be surprised at how many people actually like platforming. I hate platforming and couldn't care less about platforming myself. As you say, it's so boring to play jump-&-land-on-a-platform. But I will say that DmC's platforming are pretty dang well done considering the superb creativity and execution of those areas.
Also, I would say that I prefer the launcher "high time" to be its own button. For some reason I've never had a problem using forward-analogstick to use Stinger, but sometimes using backward-analogstick to use High Time is a pain in the ass.
