A set of F1 tyres (minus rims) weighs 42kg when new but can lose as much as 3kg in wear during a long stint. This is even more so at Spa. Moreover, the Spa has no cooldown lap, so there is no rubber pick-up. You often hear engineers tell their drivers to pick up rubber at the end of the race. Now you know why. They do the maths on very fine calculations.
They did the second weighing with a new set of tyres and it still was under weight, Mercedes knew this even as George crossed the finish line, they had obviously done something specific to George's car to give George an unfair advantage and knew they were caught, there have been times in the past I've suspected MB of cheating back in the rosberg WDC days, too many odd things happened to Lewis's car to be just accidental, sad for George but MB got caught and they will be scrutinised even more now.

@@95mushroomif I read it correctly, seems like the FIA are the ones who follow each teams procedure to drain fluids. Not the team themselves. Sounded like they’re the ones who did it out of order and had to re-weigh. Or maybe they only drain fluids to weigh whenever the car is close to the limit during the first weigh?
Yeah it was originally going to be a two stopper but, George and his race engineer decided within the race to change to a one stopper which shedded too much weight, which is about 375 grams per tire x4=1.5kg
I guess that is why they pick up rubbish marbles every time a race ends .. I notice it can not be done at Spa, because of the funny way the cars go into the podium spots, I guess it has something to do with the length of the circuit ? .. in the end no marbles picked up for Russell and a very long stint = kaput ! and a 105 4 LH
Oh wow I didn’t know that but they weighed the car with different tires I think and it was still under. (Edit) in Ted’s notebook they re-weighed Russel’s car with different tires
I guess this situation has never really occurred before, but it seems pretty unfair to base the minimum weight to include something so variable like tyre weight. They remove the fuel before weighing. Plus George most likely weighs slightly more than the minimum driver weight of 80kg in his kit based on his height, so very unlikely he gained a competitive advantage.

According to information via a tweet from Ruth Buscombe (former F1 race strategist, now F1TV commentator) the weight issue could be attributed to the one stop strategy causing the tyres to be extra worn, as well as no victory lap when driving off track to wave to fans can cause loose rubber and other substances to embed and add that weight back onto the tyres. Aside: I think no victory lap is terrible. Fans like to cheer the drivers on their victory laps, I'm sure the drivers like that too.
wow, what an interesting observation. Hadn't thought about tyre weight, reckon she's spot on. Would be interesting for the FIA to weight his tyres vs others like Alonso who went long VS new tyres, bacause that shouldn't really count George out

I'm actually surprised that George's car was found to be underweight. I thought that all of the teams were struggling to get their cars down close to the minimum weight after the current regulations were introduced. But I guess the teams have been working on that issue and have found ways to get their cars weight down.
Great stuff Kym, thank you! I know it doesn't apply in this case, but I am wondering if F1 rules offer exceptions to the weight rule when body parts are shed for on track incidents? Maybe when parts of a wing are busted off they don't even weigh enough to be a factor...

Why heartbreak? He raced in a car with an ilegal weight and gained advantage with this. The weight difference compounds every lap and helped him in his strategy.
I must have missed something, Georges car was weighed in the condition it existed when it crossed the finish line and it was legal. In my 50+ years of racing from karts on up that is the end of the story. But F1 then removed 2.8ltr of fuel for testing and weighed the car a second time and now it is too light. The problem I have with this is that the second weight is NOT the condition the car was in when it crossed the finish line. If this is the normal post race test procedure for F1 that is just stupid. Is there someplace where the public can go to read the actual F1 rules?
Even more upsetting is that the car was NOT underweight. As they were carrying the fuel and ‘using it as ballast’ - so there appears to be no benefit, but the rule is from when cars refuelled - that way one could run their car ‘underweight’ until the last fuel stop
All teams take a calculated risk when it comes to how much fuel they think they're going to need to complete the race, because every KG of fuel comes with a time penalty. Clearly Mercedes misjudged it this time.

@@addsfour3499 I'm doing this in another thread. My math sucks. But the beauty of Newton's laws is that they are easy to remember. Guesstimating is easy when you consider fuel loads that are regulated
Best post race coverage, factual, no dramatics, fantastic photos and a great presenter. I feel bad for George but he should have had another stop and therefore shouldn't have been in 1st position. Poor strategy from the team.
The second race in a row now, where the end of the race just leaves you with ... Disappointment i suppose is the best word to describe it, although not quite...
Hi Kym, something similar to this happened at the Hungarian GP, I believe 2020 or 2021, when Seb was stripped off the second podium place after they found him having less than a liter in the car and so he was stripped off P2 and disqualified.
It looks like Mercedes tried to pull a fast one (cheating) when they told the scrutineers that the fuel was drained, when in fact, 2.8 liters of fuel were still in the tank. Once all the fuel was drained out, the car was under weight. I feel for George, but it has happened to others over the years, Vettel and Ricciardo comes to mind, and It's always the teams fault. The driver is just doing the driving, they don't have a fuel gauge in the car. Mercedes should be ashamed of itself and fined severely. Is Toto losing it?
All I could see was Lewis Hamilton even though he had his battery on full deployment and DRS flap fully open also with the freshener tyres wasn't closing in on Russell which I thought was extremely strange but the DSQ explains why George had the advantage
Hopefully he's heard the inside gossip just like he said he was taking photos of Alpine before he stepped down was public information. I get the feeling thats what he was saying he said "Uhh what can I tell you".
@@lamsmiley1944 Your probably right! Well I hope you both are anyway. To see Daniel back in the top seat again would be amazing. Guy has a heart of gold.
It’s the only race I’ve been to watch, back in 2013. Camped in heavy rain, lasted until lap 3/4 then woke up again on the last lap. Much better watching on tv.
If you cut it that close others will simply call it cheating, can’t say I disagree. Especially as Toto is always extremely quick to accuse others when they make a mistake.
Before the current regulations, the teams were always running their cars close to being underweight. Most of the top teams back then actually added ballast to bring the car up to the minimum weight. A light weighing driver would get a slight benefit as they can add the ballast to get the car to weigh more evenly across the whole of the car. Drivers back then would always pick up the marbles off the track on the slow down lap after the chequered flag to ensure the car met the required minimum lap.
Was watching the race from Les Combes, and moved over midway to Blauchemont in the hopes to run onto the track for the podium. Was a great race to watch, luckily much dryer than it was on saturday 🤣. Would recommed those who come here to park in Malmedy and take shuttle bus. From car to circuit in 20 minutes is not bad at all.
6:54 Yes, I did know that, while doing the bag-checks at the Paddock Club entrance in Hungary, one of my mates waved at Ted and he waved back, he was above the clouds all day because of it xD We also had the pleasure of at least seeing you, if not properly meeting you, Kym, both at the previously mentioned Paddock Club entrance on Friday and in front of the Red Bull motorhome on Saturday.
I don't know about any of you but as I was watching the end of that race the look on Toto's falce and the complete lack of expression makes me think that we should be probably taking a closer look at Lewis's car as well!!!
They did check Lewis's car, hence his face. They tried to adjust the weight of George's by not draining the exact amount of fuel, to even the total weight out. He was expecting it. Poor George, yes, because he had a great race but not so poor Toto.
One stop means more tyre wear and no slow down lap means no marbles pick up to bring the weight up. 1.5kgs from the used rubber would be easy. Lewis’s tyres were less worn than George’s which would have been accounted for in the calculation.
Can’t Mercedes argued this and prove their car is legal by reweigh with proper tyres? I have a feeling that Merc messed up the ballast and George’s been driving car with 1.5kg lighter than everyone else from the very beginning.
Post race scrutineers, according to the sporting rules, may replace the tires if they believe marbles are impacting the vehicle weight during inspection. It wasn’t the tires.
@@tommloye4626 I understand they can, there’s a number of people in the media suggesting that it’s likely that the tyres are a part of the problem. If Lewis’s car was ok and the cars are identical why the difference?
@@pjmack75 Well, to start, cars are never “identical.” Teams don’t always give the exact same upgrades to both cars…nor are they set up the same with ballast weight. Next, there is no indication Hamilton’s car was even inspected after the race. It may have been, but only a handful of cars are selected for post-race inspections…4-5 usually.
Toto's reaction indicates to me that he knew that he knew George's car was underweight. Mercedes tried to pull a fast one but didnt expect George to pull an audible and get so high in the ranking
It is a true lesson to all the teams. The old tyres losing rubber on the track was weight lost and making aa additional stop would have also reduced that amount of fuel lost. These 2 things in essence reduced the weight of the car and as such resulted in a breach
Toto & AMG did a retro F1 strategy that works especially when you race an old circuit like SPA that has lots of tire wear data all the way back to the 1970's of no PITSTOPS. This was a brilliant experiment to revisit as the fuel became lighter on those grade of Pirelli tires with one stop! Back in the late 1970's i loved watching those skilled F1 Legends Lauda Scheckter Hunt and Watson drive their cars in the later laps with sticky worn slicks and a light fuel load on a big thirsty track...Toto took a page from those days and it worked! However the FIA WAS CAUGHT WITH ITS PANTS DOWN AND DI NOT WANT THIS OLD SCHOOL METHOD TO TAKE ROOT AGAIN!

All teams take a calculated risk when it comes to how much fuel they think they're going to need to complete the race, because every KG of fuel comes with a time penalty. Clearly Mercedes misjudged it this time.
Poor bugger. Nice work Kym
Thank you for these updates. im new to Formula series and cant watch the races yet(cant afford the streaming service) so you videos are great for me to stay up date on whats going on. Sad to hear Russell getting DQ since from what I heard he ran a amazing race.
Kym - it looked like Wolf may of knew something? We will never know - love you channel for F1
of course Toto the cheat knew all along .... did you see his non-committal response when George won ....he knew all along THEY WERE CHEATING
@@swdoctor If they had cheated then he would be celebrating in hopes of not being caught, not showing that mug
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Oscar is the new Kimi Raikkonen! Bwoahhh!
1.5KG doesn't equal 0.3 seconds a lap.
IDK why ppl are saying that
Team LH math
Explain?
Spa is a long lap
Yeah, its more at Spa.
How do you know it’s not? How much is it? Please include your workings in your proof 😅
High praise indeed. Thanks
I love you. Solid news. thanks for the hard work!
Much appreciated!
Oscar Piastri is learning fast in F1 and has great potential to be world champion before his beloved teammate Lando Norris.
I was watching Ted's Notebook. "It's Kym!!!" lol
Great video Kym!
Thank you!!
Danny Ric in a RB again!! That be ace, just can't see it happening, hope to be wrong!
What are you up to for the f1 break? Back to aus? Keep up the great work Kym, love the vids
Daniel taking Sergio's spot would be great but I really can't see that happening. But I like your theory anyway as I'm a massive Danny fan.
Hopefully he's heard the inside gossip just like he said he was taking photos of Alpine before he stepped down was public information. I get the feeling thats what he was saying he said "Uhh what can I tell you".
Why don’t you think it’ll happen? I also think it’s the most likely outcome
@@lamsmiley1944 Your probably right! Well I hope you both are anyway. To see Daniel back in the top seat again would be amazing. Guy has a heart of gold.
Mercedes cheaters found out again should be kicked out of F1
I completely agree with you
That's hardly a reason to kick a team out of F1.
It’s the only race I’ve been to watch, back in 2013. Camped in heavy rain, lasted until lap 3/4 then woke up again on the last lap.
Much better watching on tv.
Lando's parents must be SO proud of him as surely Oscar's are too. That surely goes as well for ALL the drivers I'd imagine?
Enjoy your break mate and dont forget to have a Pie at the bakery . Or if it gets to cold pop up to Broome ...Cheers
We were all wondering why George was so fast lol
Was watching the race from Les Combes, and moved over midway to Blauchemont in the hopes to run onto the track for the podium. Was a great race to watch, luckily much dryer than it was on saturday 🤣. Would recommed those who come here to park in Malmedy and take shuttle bus. From car to circuit in 20 minutes is not bad at all.
6:54 Yes, I did know that, while doing the bag-checks at the Paddock Club entrance in Hungary, one of my mates waved at Ted and he waved back, he was above the clouds all day because of it xD
We also had the pleasure of at least seeing you, if not properly meeting you, Kym, both at the previously mentioned Paddock Club entrance on Friday and in front of the Red Bull motorhome on Saturday.
Enjoyable Race and certainly has been a very entertaining first half of year. F1 24 ! Go Aussie's Dan and Oscar and "STAY PASSIONATE" ! 🇦🇺🇦🇺
I don't know about any of you but as I was watching the end of that race the look on Toto's falce and the complete lack of expression makes me think that we should be probably taking a closer look at Lewis's car as well!!!
I saw that look. He was not happy, I have no idea why but it was very suspicious.
They did weight Lewis' car. All the cars on podium plus some random cars are weighted after the race
They already checked his car
They did check Lewis's car, hence his face. They tried to adjust the weight of George's by not draining the exact amount of fuel, to even the total weight out. He was expecting it. Poor George, yes, because he had a great race but not so poor Toto.
All cars are weighted after the race.
I am just happy to see Formula 1 becoming exciting again as Max isn’t as dominant as he was last season. Stay passionate!🏁
he knew it was coming, the body language tells.
0.3 secs per lap won the race for George. Unfortunate, but the penalty seems to fit the offence.
@@tommloye4626 actually if you refer to the post race scrutineering list about 14 cars were weighed and Lewis’s was one of them.
Did Spa in 2013. I can confirm it is Hell getting out after Race day. Great Podcast by the way Kym. I think your betting instincts are correct.🇬🇧👍
Toto's reaction indicates to me that he knew that he knew George's car was underweight. Mercedes tried to pull a fast one but didnt expect George to pull an audible and get so high in the ranking
After a great race, spoils the whole day.
It is a true lesson to all the teams. The old tyres losing rubber on the track was weight lost and making aa additional stop would have also reduced that amount of fuel lost. These 2 things in essence reduced the weight of the car and as such resulted in a breach
Loved seeing you chat with Ted in pit lane Kym 🤣🤣😎😎😎😎 beast mode .
Classic
Brilliant video!
Glad you liked it!
However the FIA WAS CAUGHT WITH ITS PANTS DOWN AND DI NOT WANT THIS OLD SCHOOL METHOD TO TAKE ROOT AGAIN!
those damn rules....
Kym I completely agree w you on the checo situation.. 💯 Danny's gonna get that seat
