Rattlesnake In Indiana?! (Brown County State Park)

We decided to pack up the Nexus Wraith Super C and wander from the Ozarks back to Indiana to a park we haven't visited yet... Brown County State Park in Nashville, Indiana!
This park had lots of good reviews and appeared to have some great hiking. You know us, we can't say no to some great hiking! We really hoped for better weather, better luck, and fewer ticks! Luckily Indiana didn't disappoint!
We reserved a site as we drove to the park that day! No issues there. Once we arrived we settled into our very sloped site (sigh, we just can't win there!) We explored the campground area with an evening walk with the dogs.
The next day we decided it was time to hit the trails! We dressed light because it is definitely feeling more and more like Summer!
We did a total of 7 miles and it felt great with beautiful scenery and we even came up and got to cool off in a big lake and several crystal clear streams!
We we almost finished with our hike when we almost stepped on a rattlesnake!! It was in the campground area where it shook its tail at us then slithered towards a nearby tent. Eek! 😱
Later we did some Jeep things where we took the dogs for some ice cream and a Jeep ride through the state park on all of the beautiful scenic roads. We then decided to treat ourselves with going out to a local pizza joint and got pizza for the FIRST time in weeks! I know, it's hard to believe we went that long without pizza on this trip, but it was worth it!
Nashville Indiana was a beautiful park and we highly recommend you place it on your list of parks to visit.

We got a smaller travel trailer because of the reason you encountered with your site. We are able to stuff in into more secluded wooded sites. Much better vacation that way. Brown county is one of our favorite parks. We are heading there again today actually. Thanks for sharing your vacation on youtube
We actually prefer open (no trees) campsites, but it's all about personal preferences!😁👍🏻

We live in Louisville KY, it is about 1.5 hr drive for us to Brown County S.P. and Nashville, IN. We go a couple times a year to walk around Nashville and see all the artist. We were there last month. On the north side of town maybe 3 or 4 miles up the road there is a covered bridge that's neat to see. You should go see the Covered Bridge Festival near Turkey Run S.P. in NW IN. It is in October, make reservations early ( 8 to 10 months out, it is a popular festival) for the festival. Lots of fun to be had. Great video!

There are a couple other State Parks near by. McCormick Creek and Catract Falls. I'm from Indiana and travel a lot down that way. Kayaking is fun at Catract you can paddle up to the lower falls (upper and lower).
We haven't heard of cataract sp but have been told that McCormick was one we should check out! Thanks for the tips!

I'll have to look but we got it at a Walmart so it's just a run of the mill one but has worked flawlessly for us!

I grew up in south central Indiana and rarely heard of people seeing rattlesnakes. Now it's very common, especially in Brown County.
I never would have expected to see rattlesnake warning signs at this park and then actually see a pretty big (to us) rattlesnake! We don't really see them in Ohio so I didn't think it would be much different in Indiana
A suggestion, wear snake boots. This part of Indiana is prime Copperhead territory especially during warm months.
Probably a great suggestion because we had no idea until we saw the signs, and then a snake! Definitely made us rethink what we did
My wife and I got too close to a rattlesnake at Big Meadows Campground on Skyline Drive in VA way back in 1982. I moved her back quick when I heard that rattle in the high grass that was next to us. I have had three snake encounters this spring, however, nothing poisonous. I almost stepped on a 12" Garter snake on the campground trail at West Branch State Park, OH in April; I almost ran over 5' black rat snake with my mountain bike at Lums Pond State Park in Delaware in May; and I had to relocate a nasty 18" - 24" Garter snake from my back yard in South Jersey last week. Seems to be more snakes this year.
We were unknowingly really close with this snake! It was right off the road in the campground, not even on a trail! Mike saw it first and alerted us to take steps back. Luckily it started to rattle and slither towards a tent away from us. We've never seen one in the wild let alone that close, and in Indiana! They did have signs in the park warning of Rattlesnakes luckily. We saw a decent sized garter snake (and put that in our video) in the Ozarks!

I've had this TomTom watch for probably 6 years and it is still going strong!
That is a cool harness leash combo guy has on. What is name of it? Seems better than a regular harness. My dogs harnesses are ok but I like this solution better as it seems to just attach to the dogs collar.
It's a control leash and I really like it! I got it for Piper but the size was too big so I use it on Guy instead. www.controlleash.com

Use a screwdriver to widen the prong piece. I’ve done that to help with the strength of the rollers to hold it in place.

Once again thank you for filming your hike, I enjoyed it. However, watching Mike climb the fire tower, made my knee and back hurt. There's no way I would have been able to do that.
It was a pretty tall fire tower! Taller than quite a few we've been up.
Snakes are really really bad in Brown County.
Guess so! We saw a few signs signs so we knew they were in the area but it was crazy to see it next to the road in the campground going towards a tent!
Did the magnets work on the drawers?

We did the same thing to our fifth wheel drawers and put earth magnets on a couple of cabinets in the bathroom. 😎👍🦌

If our vehicles have to be road-worthy, then why do the roads not have to be vehicle-worthy?
Good question! We all pay a ton of taxes to have the roads still be junk

It was definitely surprising to see that snake in the campground! Not even on the trail. Guy didn't seem to interested but Piper was very intrigued! She's never seen something like that and then it made noise at us🐍🤦🏼♀️
We had the same issue with drawers and cabinet doors in our trailer. I put on the the plastic child-proof latches that you push in. 4500 miles and 8 days of traveling to Arizona and back to Ohio. They worked perfectly!
If these don't work long term we might do something like that or the push locks

I do enjoy a Wagner escape... Living in non-tropical Scotland I'm never ever going to see a Rattlesnake on a hike; but to see it so close to those tents!! Yikes! Tred softly and carry a big Wraith I think?

The snake did go right for the tent! There was no one there or else we would have warned them. A local told us today that someone got bit by a Rattlesnake at this park! Crazy!
It didn't Wagner on us this stop! We left that in Missouri at the last campground where it wouldn't stop raining on us!

Haha yeah there was probably 50 signs about the low clearance leading up to it. Haha Jeep made it just fine, the wraith would have destroyed it (and itself). We had a great time here!
If you end up over by Lawrenceburg Indiana there is some free camping at Lawrenceburg Speedway if you need it. They have some 50 amp electric plus water. Lawrenceburg is a nice little town down in down town.

My 2021 Wraith has two of those latches on each drawer and they still come open while driving. So I found another type of latch on Amazon that I will try adding. Looked like really nice hiking there.
So far the magnet latches are helping. Not sure if it'll be the end fix but it has helped so far!

We camp there a lot. I try to get site 18! They have a good assortment of activities and good hiking! Big Woods brewery is great!

So Mike fixed his drawers so that they would stay shut. Interesting. Had I been in the spot behind the Wraith, you would not have had to move the dog chains, I would have been happy to meet Guy; he’s a nice chill dog. Glad he and Piper didn’t meet the snake.

Random question, does anyone use a satellite for TV like Dish? Thinking about getting one for our camper as we are starting to travel more. Thanks in advanced.
We have the wineguard satellite dish on the roof of the super c and have the month to month plan with dish Network on it. That's why we generally try to get sites that are void of trees😂 especially since it tends to rain on us. Been great!

So did the drawer latch fix work? Inquiring minds what to know. Good thing you missed that rattlesnake, it could have ruined your whole day. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
We just installed them not long ago lol so far it's working, but wanted to put it to the test before reporting that they fixed it when we aren't sure haha
I put an offer on 10 acres in NE WA state but backed out when I found out there were rattlesnakes in the area. Ended up buying 5 - 1/2 acres in Pend Oreille County, where there are NO rattlesnakes - one of the only counties (if not the only county) in eastern WA that doesn't have rattlesnakes. It's one thing to run into them on a hike, it's another to have to live with them on your property.
We've never seen one in person, in the wild before! Didn't expect it in the campground... But we were warned with signage that they were in the park itself. Never expected to see them in Indiana vs out west and South
I used child safety latches for our drawers and cabinets, they work great.
That would work! I hate the look and function of them though... Maybe I'm too much of a child to like them😂

I follow some other TH-camrs as well and I have been hearing it is really hard to get a spot to camp at... but you guys are like Michele and I and always fly by the seat of our pants.. my point is, what is your experience in finding places to stay in such short notice? We haven't had issues. Now, we aren't picky and can go pretty much any direction so that helps. Most people want a specific campground on a specific day in a specific site and refuse to change. We are fluid on where we go. Like we've always said too, people always cancel, so if you keep an eye out something will usually pop up. We've yet to not have a site when we want to camp.

It is time for RV manufacturers to build drawers that don’t open. Nothing but laziness on their part.

I have a TomTom activity watch and it downloads the activities to their app on my phone. Have had this watch for many years and it's still going strong!

This is a TomTom triathlon watch. It does a bunch of different activities and is waterproof. I've had it for several years and it still going strong!

It blended in so well is how we almost stepped on it! It just just off the road in the campground. I expected to see it in the woods but not chilling at a campsite! It slithered and shook it's rattle at us as it went towards a tent!😬
I love rattle snakes! They are my most favorite snake. (Personally, I don’t care for snakes.) However, rattlesnakes have a built in warning device. Simply walk around them. Done.
