Shadaksharam - Among the Mantras of Lord Murugan, the Shadakshara (six-lettered) Mantra "Sharavana Bhava", has prime importance for devotees. The six letters of this Mantra symbolise the six faces of Lord Murugan.
Lord Shiva is said to have five faces - Sadyojatam, Vamadeva, Tatpurusha, Aghora and Ishana - which face the four directions and the sky upwards respectively. The sixth invisible face is Adhomukham, which faces internally towards the Kundalini Shakti of our body, and hence represents Goddess Parvati. Thus combined energy of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appear in the form of Lord Murugan with six faces, and hence he is worshipped with the Shadakshara Mantra.
This song in Ragam Shanmukhapriya (the 56th Melakarta), set to Adi Thalam, is a musical representation of the Shadaksharam, conceived by Smt Bhavani Ramamoorthy. Each akshara of the mantram is represented by a swara passage followed by the name of the corresponding face, and a prayer to one aspect of Lord Murugan as the Deity of the number Six.
The song concludes with a Korvai (rhythmic swara pattern) culminating in "Sharavana Bhava Enum Thiru Manthiram", the famous song of Brahmasri Papanasam Sivan, which celebrates the Shadakshara Mantram of Lord Murugan.
It has been rendered by Kum. R. Srivarshini, daughter and disciple of Smt Bhavani Ramamoorthy.
