(making the melody): "as you can see there's not much going on it's quite simple" BRO that melody and lead sound is the most heavenly shit I've heard in ages
Thank you for making a tutorial that isn't, "Yeah, just play around with it." You've given clear ideas on proper song structure and it has really helped me figure out my way around the studio. Also, I friggin love your editing. I'm hopeful there will be another tutorial going into more advanced song construction, and the sub and like button has been pushed.
Thank you so much for your nice comment! I am glad that this video could help you out! I will for sure try to do some more tutorials in the future covering more in-depth things, so stay tuned for that! Thank you for the sub and for the like! Super appreciated!
But "just play around with it" is probably THE BEST way of learning whenever you're not analysing in detail. Just playing around is how I've come up with my best melodies and chord progressions. Keep in mind I've played piano for 10 years now. There's no one size fits all way of explaining how to produce chillstep/melodic dubstep. I've tried really hard to make such tutorials but they sort of require the viewer to already have 1-3 years of piano experience otherwise it's like trying to run barefoot through sharp glass. It can work, but it's not realistic. Basics first, then it's play around and improvise. You're making music (with your heart), not making food after a recipe. What you're looking for after that is how to understand your DAW (FL studio/ableton etc) and then tutorials are really helpful. There's clearly two skillsets here. First one is actual composing which is often done at a piano or guitar, second one is mixing/producing which is done at the PC. For my first 12 months of writing songs in 2008 I could only make simple songs around 45 seconds long. In 2013 I picked up FL studio and my friend Electus taught me how that software worked but I was not new to composing by then. However the mixing was totally new and really hard, still is hard! I've covered my personal favourites and best tips in my tutorials to get your songs to sound tight! Sorry for the essay, just felt like chipping my two cents in as someone who has been producing chillstep/melodic dubstep since 2011 :) Kunde inte höra att du var Svensk S.A.M för du har riktigt bra engelska.
And you're 100% right about playing around. Playing around is one of the best ways to get to know the softwares, your style of music and how to get around things!
In my first year or two (back in 2008-2009) all my first songs were only about 1 minute long. But I still uploaded them, and got a little bit of feedback. I think getting used to uploading songs even if they're short will be good for someone who is just starting out! In the beginning, consistency is somewhat more important than quality. You get quality by doing it a lot! But in the end, again just have fun with it :)
Anyone looking for the synth sound in Serum, you can recreate one quite effortlessly. Take the basic saw wave, add unison (quite a lot, I used 15), add channel B, add some more unison (I used 9) and pitch it up 1 octave, adjust ENV 1 by turning up the attack and release and you should be good. play a little with the detunes of the oscillators.
So glad i found this tutorial :D I'm a huge Chillstep fan and your tutorial just showed me, that there is no reason not trying it out myself. Chillstep always seemed so huge and detailed... guess i was overwhelmed by these beautiful melodic walls of sound. But the way you broke it down, just boosted my confidence. Step by step, starting simple and sculpting out the details after the basics are done, should help me, not getting stuck time and time again. Tnx a lot my friend :) Peace
ALTHOUGH I don’t own Nexus nor Massive, this tutorial has been the easiest I have watched to really follow and not have important steps skipped. Thank you so much. I never leave comments I just wanted to let you know

Bro I watched a lot but yours are the best. Please do more tutorials especially in chillstep. Also I have piano theories already. Just I always think of a song like a piano with left hand and right hand. How should we add note for other instruments like sub bass, kick, snare.
3xOSC plugin sine wave, put mix level on oscillator 2 and 3 to 0%, then put the 1st oscillator coarse pitch knob to -24 semitones. its not an amazing version but its free and quick
"Analog Bass 1" in the Harmor plugin. Move the modulation to the bottom right black square [right on the top right corner of that black square], go into the FX tab on the right and turn the Delay off. In my opinion it's perfect for the free version of FLS without anything extra.
My melody and saw sound like crap when i put them up to c7, they are getting really high pitched it almost feels like they are screaming in my ear haha. is this because of the samples i use? Great tutorial btw :D
Not sure how your applying limiter that its doing that funky to your mixer but shouldn't work that way 0_o That's odd haha.. Deff need that full control over the mixer and each channel individually
I have a question about Nexus . I downloaded it but it's taking up way too much space on my laptop , so can I install it on FL then delete the files from my laptop to save space ? Would the files transfer to FL so I could have them there to use but not take up so much space ?
so i dont have reft neonus or something in my fl studio and i think im a chillstep maker but the problem is i dont have these amazing sounds in my system is their a easy way of getting them for free possible?

great tutorial. very helpful
Learned something new, thanks! Like
Aural Synapse on Harmor is almost identical to the saw synth you used on Nexus.
Also GMS - Classic Detune TE (Lead & Synths) it's the same thing and it's also already included in producer FL studio edition!
Coincidentally... I also found Aural Synapse is similar to that Nexus ... 😄
