- Superstar DJs and world-famous clubs normally make the headlines about Ibiza. But every season puts more pressure on the island's sustainability. How much longer can Ibiza cope this way?
Amber Haque travels to San Antonio's West End, finds out about diversity in House music and the destruction threatening Ibiza's natural beauty. If you're from outside the UK you can watch the film here.

We are BBC Stories, a group of journalists making films, long and short, with the younger audience (18-24) in mind. The idea is to tackle issues which concern and impact this group of people. So think about anything from race and identity to mental health, money and much more.
I went to Eivissa for the first time way back in 98/99 on a 'pure whim' with a friend. One day he returned to the apartment and told me he had found a brilliant beach bar (Cafe Mambo) with a great sunset and music.
Back then you could either make your way there on the roads from the centre of San Ant or risk 'the short cut' by climbing around the rocks, with the sea directly beneath you (there was no man-made public board walks back then).
Since then I have returned on a yearly basis - even getting married at the amazing 'Hacienda Na Xamena Hotel', on the opposite of the island, in 2010.
And just to mention, my partner who is spanish (but lived and worked in London for over 2 decades) had never been to Eivissa, any of the family included, saying that has spaniards they believed it was a crazy place full of drunk/drugged-up tourist.
But when we first met I introduced my partner to the other side of the island (and also San Ant - that didn't go down well with them!) and now the spanish side of the family love it - especially the old town and all the hidden 'locals' beaches etc.
33 years on, I now stay in Ibiza Old Town surrounding areas, just because I suppose, I have grown, matured and appreciate the more 'sophisticated and adult' parts of the island and all the things I never knew even existed outside of San Ant. (I thought San Ant 'was' ibiza!!. (like a lot of young first-timer to the island do).
Years on and now 'grown', I look back and think how the hell did I even stay in San Ant for a week!) but then I suppose that part of the island was and still is many teens first introduction to Eivissa).
I have travelled to many countries (and even lived in mainland south spain has an adult) but nothing comes close to the 'magical' draw and "Wow!..I have arrived", feeling when I land in Eivissa.
It is surely a 'one-off' and unmatched AMAZING place and destination, which some other destinations have tried to duplicate but have clearly failed to get that 'undescriptive ' vibe.

When I visited in 2016 I took my wife to the Spa at Na Xamena. The views of the Ocean on top of the Cliffs were absolutely stunning. I can only imagine how beautuful your wedding was at that property.
@@Mike-yj5yw I am glad that you experienced it too. It is an amazing location, off the beaten track. I viewed many well known wedding locations before choosing this one (none of them compared!) When our guest arrived to be seared in the amphitheatre it took their. A year later, an old friend and wedding guest got married there too, because of the views etc.
I lived on that island for 5 years, all year round. This is just rubbish reporting with someone thinking they can do a spiffy edit with some tunes attached.
The complaints of the locals are not about San Antonio West end but about the unaffordable rents for seasonal workers and illegal subletting of rooms and even balconies in the center of the towns.
Then there's the bullshit about Ibiza being a great attraction due to its music and parties, completely ignoring drugs being one of the main attractions of Ibiza.
And please, let's not shoehorn LBGT and race topics into everything possible. Carl Cox is as black as it gets, Roger Sanchez isn't too white either and they have been around the block long before we knew how to spell Ibiza.
And then finally because it's trendy, let's add in a commercial piece for the eco warriors on a solar powered cat.

@@simonarr6584 yes because then she might have reported on the complete lack of fresh water during the summer months. The water is 100% coming from the overloaded desalination plant, so much so that they often just filter the water but have to mix salt water into the desalinated output. Try brushing your teeth with that then you know what that means.
How about the hopeless waste management, most of which has to be shipped off the island because there just is not space in the landfills?
How about when it does rain, the sewers overflow regularly, all it's goodness spilling in rivers down the main streets and straight into the sea.
And where's the power coming from for the island? Why not visit their powerplants on Ibiza and Formentera pumping enormous amounts of pollution into the air, mixing well with the jet fumes from the air traffic, I guess?
That would of course require real reporting work,.

This should be titled "Is British Tourism Destructive?" instead. You've literally gone to San Antonio where all the rude and cheap-ass Essex tourists go, with little or no appreciation for Spanish culture, food, or Ibiza's history. Luckily our European cousins do come and enjoy the beauty of the island in a respectful way. We hope they cut all the Easyjet and Ryanair flights from the UK to this precious island soon.

Ibiza’s glory is close to end… I’ve been going there all summer seasons during the last 25 years and although it is a beautiful place to be, nightlife and sky rocketing prices have ruined the island… RIP Ibiza 😢
What the problem is ibiza used to be about the music lovers who knew there djs and the tunes. Now it's over run by common UK idiots the type who walk round with top off no shape and British patterned shorts the common larger lout. No style they can't name a dj and all they want is a quick pint get wrecked a fight or shag well they should go to magaluf for that. There the ones wrecking the environment I'm surprised it's not mentioned more in the video also the music scene is dying because of them following the commercial tunes instead of supporting the house/trance scene there.
Who goes all the way to ibiza, just so you can hang out in a pokey bar in the west end listening to some bedroom dj play on his numark mixtrack pro 3 - you can get that at home. the whole point is to go to a super club and listen to some big name dj (while downing disco bikkies like they're going out of fashion) and make a 15 euro bottle of water last 4 hours.

Ibiza was brilliant from the late 80s - to the early 00s, back then it really was an incredible place, now it's just another spoilt collection of resorts trading on it's former glory, the magic has been well and truly bled out of the place over the last 20 years. I get why - it's had to move with the times, the money wasn't flowing back into the Island back then, it was flowing into the pockets of club promoters and drug dealers, so to make tourism sustainable on Ibiza long term, they need to switch the ravers and the heavy drinking brigade out, to get the high end/wealthy people in, who will spend big in restaurants, shops, casinos.. create jobs and businesses, reduce the anti-social behaviour, make the drug taking less overt. The idea of having some illicit hedonistic experience on Ibiza has disappeared in this age of the internet and camera phones, and it means a constant slew of bad publicity blights the place. The sad thing is, is back in the day - it was about the music, that's what made it special. The music is an afterthought now, it's about creating the illusion of some affluent lifestyle for social media views.
My first time there was in 2015, I was 23. I did enjoy heading to the beach after Space to catch the sunrise and felt like I experienced a tiny bit of that magic you speak about. I think you’re right about about internet and camera phones ruining it. I can only imagine what it was like back in the 90s, I think the dance music was much better back then as well.

I was there in the eighties and nineties..... Affordable.... A great vibe.... Now a total total rip off where your insulted by the prices in theclubs and some bars.. Music gone down like the Titanic.... 500 euros for bottles of vodka... Champagnes.. and more.... Even if i could afford it i wouldnt give those greedy bastards a fucking euro.... 😠😠😠😠😠It will suffer for its utter greed....

There's all types that visit probably the most racially diverse place I've ever been to not to mention all the looky lookys some of who are robbing scum but most are okay. @@unelectedbureaucrat2003 even if it's diverse by "British standards" doesn't mean it's actually diverse. There's no real hybridity in the club culture. If you go to O Beach you're partying with just Brits, a lot of non-Brits feel put-off, or even uncomfortable, with the oversaturation of British culture present, + it's a different way of partying. You get deeply segregated parties with no intermixing. I'm Serbian Canadian, lived in Bristol for 2 years on a work holiday, then lived in Ibiza 2 summers, and it was a culture shock for most Brits that I'd even rent a shared 2 bdrm apartment with them in San An (with 6 ppl total). Your culture does not mix well with others, you're an island that thinks you can bring your own music, socialization and fashion to Ibiza.. naming 2 black djs (black coffee and carl cox) doesn't kill the diversity question. The fact that you would list this kind of tokenism as an example of diversity just proves how out of touch British culture is when it comes to its views on integration. Not shocked that the unilateral British perspective on this is that the BBC can f itself for posting this trash. You better be careful, or someone will start a publicity sh * t storm about the problems with British racism and how its torturing this island, and they'll do it in a PC-fucking friendly kinda way.

I'm from Ibiza and this is total bullshit and extremely misleading. Also she claimed "Last year, hundreds of locals took the streets to protest what they say is unlimited, disrespectful and excessive tourism to Ibiza" when those protests actually had nothing to do with that and in fact where protesting high rental prices during summer season. All those complaints (those that aren't made up by this disingenuous reporter) are about San Antonio and it's true that San Antonio is a shithole, but it's a incredibly tiny part of the island that aims for ultra cheap tourism. Trust me nobody is complaining about tourism here since the island very much depends on it. Also Mambo is not a big part of ibizan culture since locals would never go there. DJ's are not chosen based on the color of their skin but the revenue they bring in. It's true that have a environmental problem here including posidonia and it should be taken seriously, but when she's sitting at the beach doing her sensationalistic showing of the seagrass on shore she's just showing a natural phenomena that is normal and has been going on forever.
What was that interview with The Mason Collective all about?? Perplexed by it. These guys had no role models? How can that be? And these three are progressive to the island are they? What a waste of an interview.
When the UK introduced all day drinking, people were worried about increased alcohol consumption and drunks in the street. It didn't happen. Closing bars when they are full is madness. Do the authorities really imagine tens of thousands of partygoers are just going to walk home in silence at 3am?
The real problem is VIP elitism. What used to be a small area in a venue for a small number of people, has become mainstream. The clubs and bars are eventually going to price themselves out of business but before that happens, Ibiza will lose its reputation as the place to be, and become a hang-out only for the wealthy. But that demographic is much smaller.
Along with ridiculously high prices for food and drink comes huge increases in property rental and purchase prices. Locals struggle to find somewhere affordable away from the nightlife and this leads to frustrations.
The local government needs to wake up and businesses need to put aside their greed and balance volume against exclusivity.
Where I live only Wetherspoons is open all day. Most suburban pubs don't open until 11am but stay open all afternoon. In the countryside I was surprised to see pubs not open until 12 noon and closed between 3pm and 7pm.

Why do you bring up representation, Ibiza's way of life was formed from a free thinking diverse community that the BBC would have had no interest in back when it was gaining popularity. This was based on an unconscious expression of inclusivity that humans are quite able to feel, not now some forced way of pushing representation based on things other than merit.
I thought it was a different presenter at 21.55 her accent changed 360° when she was talking to the posh trustafarian sailors ..vs the 3 Manchester DJ's ..she knows how to turn it on.
I've watched quite a few videos of the party spots across Europe . I've got to say the behavior of the UK revelers is truly disrespectful of the locale and in my opinion a disgrace to the country of origin. I actually could not believe what I was watching at times. If I was a local I would be out there protesting to close the industry down, I'm sure very little gets fed back to the local community. Funny most of the bar owners interviewed seemed to be Brits. Something rteally wrong with this world and its attitude to our HOME WORLD

Visited Ibiza from the States in 2016 fullfilling a dream I'd had since 1999. I downloaded a Radio 1 Paul Oakendfold set playing at Space. It was the 1st time hearing about this mythical sounding place, Ibiza. 17 years later I made it to Ibiza just before Space closed a couple months later. It's a trip & Island I will never forget.
Well in 2020 i don't think they will have any overtourism problem.

I stayed in Ibiza 3 times in different years, and it's a shame that the british ppl dont have the respect to other tourists, and even with the locals... most of the confusions that i saw was made by drunken brits, it seems they like to provoque the ppl around them, i dont know if it's happen because the alcool, or if they think it was a funny thing, or even if it's being part of their temper, always surching for trouble! I saw many tourists nationalities over there, but wen the problems start there, it is always because of them! Its obnoxius, their comportment against other ppl, this must to stop!!!
And If I see / experience this behavior from patrons no matter what country or event I am attending.....it’s always the British. Always.

I've been traveling back and forth to Ibiza for around 20 years. Music has changed and so has the interests of the youth. Gone has the days 90s Trance and Balearic house, now RnB music is trending much more and theres a much larger influx of generic pop house music. All the kids want a taste of the champagne Geordie shore lifestyle and Ibiza has succumbed to allowing it....I hate it , but it makes money.
Thats why their is a much larger underground dance music scene in other European countries now which the old Ibiza heads are following.

@@paulbradynsno8513 but it's only the revival of the classics older producers, only within the last couple of years. Cream trance nights have been re-introduced along with new nights such as shine at Eden. They have struggled to regain the following only succeeding by offering mid week events at less than half the price of regular tickets against modern acts. I watched Paul Oakenfold at shine last year it cost me 20euros the majority of the younger people in the line didn't know who he was and was only going because it was at Eden in the centre of San an and it was one of the cheaper tickets mid week when the newer moder acts weren't playing charging 3x the price.
'R and B' is just another word for third rate pop music that has been influenced by soul or reggae. R and B used to stand for rhythm and blues which was back to basics rock music such as Dr Feelgood. Berlin is now the centre of techno music.

I know Art Deco Cafe del Mar been on the Strip since June 1980, which means they will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2020.

Ibiza used to be where you went for a family holiday if you wanted something a bit more upmarket than Majorca. Then hippies started to take over which attracted the DJ's and then the crowds.
Was there when it all started at Mambo with Pete, we were/are the real ravers. Quality hyper focussed on the music, no drugs, no bull, proper clubbbing. No-one can take that away from us, long live the pioneers. No-one else can say that. Peace.

This is exactly why ibiza is fuct....no alternative culture left whatsoever...its either cheap piss up bars with counter culture themes or wankathon sets by elite djs where you are over charged and under nourished. Its a beautiful island but no longer for art or expression.

Well the more sanctions and restrictions they place the more tourists like me will just not be back spending our money in their country. Their economy will take a hit and it'll be their fault. Ibiza without Tourist revenue is nothing.
They do not have this sanctions in other parts of Ibiza, mostly in Sant Antoni. And I hope that the tourists (mostly people of England) stay there. They are disrespectful, wear no shirts, yell a lot and more. I have been in Sant Antoni once but I refuse to go back there, other parts are much better. They are the ones destroying Sant Antoni and I hope they stay only there.

It feels like Mallorca or Chersonissos due to people of England and Whales (not all of them ofcourse). They are disrespectful to other tourists and people that live there. Good documentary, although not sure why the race/ diversity is raised as an issue, colour isn’t anything to do with house music, if you like the music, you can play it out whatever your skin colour . They said it themselves, they played rap/grime originally and decided they like house.

Spot on, personally my west end days are long over (I live nearby) but that doesn't mean it should be shut down. I hear all the time "people have no respect" but trust me it was a million times less respectful in the 90s. The west end hasn't got worse, you've got older and "wiser" 🤣

I wouldn't go back tae Ibiza. €20 for a bottle of water at a club. They won't even give you free refill. That is so dangerous.

Nice little report about Ibiza. Overtourism will destroy Ibizas nature, and some solar energy here and there will not be able to save it. By the way the leafs of the Posidonia on the beach do not mean the Posidonia is dying, just as leafs in the forest don't mean the trees are dying. In healthy marine ecosystems, the posidonia looses leafs and regrows other leaves, it's a continous cycle until the plant will die and be replaced by another. However the loss due to the boats and pollution is obviously real.
I holidayed in Ibiza with my family back in the 70's and it was a beautiful place then. We went off-season (April) and it was a pretty cool place. Not so sure that place still exists. However, what it is now is what they wanted it to become or else it would not have become that, would it? Money is still the driving force. And incidentally, the music on the video is very good and one track in particular has caught my attention. The track that starts with "Everybody" at 2:35, anyone know what that track is?

I was first Ibiza in the late 60ies. Lived in a Bronner planned condo in the Calle de la virgen. Playing as a child with Spanish children. Locals lived there. Las Salinas was a lovely lonely beach.
My last visit was in the early 80ies. Then never again. My parents sold it.
I’m happy to remind the old time while real hippies and Devine was there.
Now it’s some kind of Disney land. Pity, but that’s tourism.

I agree with you regarding ibiza being a money pit. But one thing that the islands local government do well with and take serious in the light of this, is that they they plough a lot of money back into the islands conservation (which a lot of mass tourist destination do not do.
Yes, Ibiza has changed loads. I started going in the late 90's, when the present motorways did not exist and the buses were disco buses!. But to this day still return to the island (just not San Antonio anymore - not even if it was free and you paid my flight!). Also, most people from back in the day has teenagers who first landed in San Ant (and didn't know there was a 'whole island' outside or it, probably as adults don't stay or visit it anymore - just because we mature and have different taste with that.
Overall though, I think Ibiza is a 'one-off' and I think from teen introduction to adult maturity you grow with it and place yourself on the island where you feel best.

Ibiza îs unique, but very expensive now....after 7 years I came back and prices got very high for everything...to much New constructions/ apartament/ bars/ places/ etc no space for nature...

@Bore off. Lol, that's simply not true. Brits travel abroad cos your weather, food and landmarks are shite. You will see lots of tourists in London/Oxford/Bristol, cos those are the only decent cities in England I'm afraid. The few working class brits that moved to Ibiza in the search of sun and money either work as waiters or started some sort of cheap bars in San Antonio (just like they did in Magaluf, Mallorca). Yes, sorry to tell you what we all Europeans think of you: being a Brit has never been a synonym of class.
@@yaszsz They travel abroad because it's too expensive to holiday at home as train fares and accommodation is so expensive and if you have to book a holiday months in advance you don't know what the weather will be like in this country. It could be a wash out July or a wash out August. The weather is different every summer in the UK. And we have a lot to offer tourists from the UK and abroad such as the theatres in the West End and the provinces. Castles and theme parks as well. Food has improved vastly in the past forty years if you are prepared to pay for it.
There are classy people as well as uncouth people living in the UK just as in every other country in Europe. Go to France and you will see the beaufs (the equivalent of white chavs who are annoying but relatively harmless) and the racailles who are from north Africa and violent. There are also bad parts to every city in the UK just like there are in other countries. There are districts in Paris and Berlin that are even scarier than the poorest parts of London.

Ibiza Has Lost out in 2020 & it's 2021 now it's still dragging behind a Pandemic , the people there are findin it hard , I hope it goes back to Time when it is was Less Popular ,kind of Restart . But we do not know ,do we ! People have been priced out they made Ibiza actually because they kept going back ,if we didn't go then where would the island be now !! , Who says Billionaires & wealthy people have a House Music Knowledge & Have been following it like from the the beginning , example 1988 common people loyal to house 🏠 House music 🎵 are the lifeline to the island within the 100 days they are in season knock on knock effect , places like this can change especially in 2020 ... But if the obvious Eh ! Hmm ! Stays away & then maybe it will come back better & more Advanced than before ...it's a number of things about Ibiza actually ,can go in to a Depressing state . It's Eco tourism Music Heads ,Like they say here Mess & dynamics Environmentally is affected ... we can hopefully get back to Ibiza & Enjoy it more than taking a slight Advantage of it ...at the end of the day it's your holiday Vacation & how & what you do on is entirely up to you & how you have earned cash ..
Lived and worked in a club in the west end during the 90s julian the bar manager is a friend of mine and he’s SPOT ON. The so called locals do not live in the west end it’s the tourists and workers. Just came back from there 2 weeks ago and san an is on its arse. A lot of people who have been there for years are leaving due to the high cost of living and lack of work !

I first came to Ibiza almost 30 years ago. It was very different back then. It’s become a victim of its own success nowadays. Sad to see.
It was Cafe Del Mar and not Mambo that encapsulated the true spirit of Ibiza. Cafe Del Mar opened in 1980. The ‘sunset strip’ was never meant to be a big party area, you did that in the clubs later.
