Dread Language Archive A segment of my series recording the Dread language from Destiny 2. (Music from Sessions: Star Guardian Taliyah: • Sessions: Star Guardia... ) O'RE'KOS'KID'ZI !
This is interesting. I had attempted to decipher the syllables myself before, as there actually is a YT video I found that isolated all Dread voice lines, from the Weavers, Attendants, Grims, Husks, Omens, and Harbingers. It’s easy to tell which ones are meant to be melee and grunting, but many more are sentences that haven’t been deciphered yet. As an added bonus, it seems Dread units say different things independent of one another, i.e Subjugators and Tormentors say different things and don’t share any similar voice lines. One example of Tormentor voice lines was shared in one of TFS ViDocs: “Khos’yen’e’ghet” and “vha’tokhu’vakhat”
@@sehyunjun251 so, are we gonna have to wait for a lore tab or something that basically has the Dread language (which I’m calling Dreadic) written on it? Cause I pray that Bungie is actually gonna want us to decipher it like we did with the Eliksni language,
@sehyunjun251 I have hoping to find some overlapping words in the process of recording them, but although several entire voicelines are shared, I have yet to find separate words that are shared between voicelines.
@@sehyunjun251 we have some overlap based on context from multiple dread sources. Not as perfect, but by using overlapping phrases/syllables with those, we might have enough context to be able to start forming a rudimentary understanding. It would be WAY easier though if we had a single translated sentence.
Bungie said they made a fully translatable language, so I imagine (hope) that they will give us some kind of cipher to do so. Maybe at the very least, we'll get a single sentence translated in a lore tab to get us started.
Just playing the game and hearing them, I honestly thought Bungie was full of crap, but listening to them in a row with subtitles, I can for sure see the patterns of a language now. I'm not sure if it is a full language, but there is for sure a structure, specific rules, and repeated words/syllables.
Oh wow. I questioned whether it was a real language as Bungie claimed, but seeing the transcriptions with the language, I can see obvious patterns and overlaps now. Wonder if we can draw some context at some of their word usage to get a better reference to the meanings of a few words as a baseline.
I think we should really start looking at what the dev said when he said we could decipher it. "Kos yen eget" "Va Toko vagat" I believe there is a reason he used these lines but why?
Glad it helps. I thought about using IPA, but between editing and transcribing all of the footage by myself I decided that trying to use all those special characters would be too much for my sanity lol.
Is there any “victory” dialogue for when you die to an Omen? I know every other species does a taunt / growl once they kill you if there are no targets around.
Great video!! Me being a native Spanish speaker, the first time I heard "Id' ga' ko' ta" I'd swear I heard "hpta" which is an abbreviation for a Spanish slang. I'm still 100% sure the Dread would call us hpta.
bungie devs said it would be possible to understand some of their dialogue, has someone been able to like translate them or something? im curious since the expansion dropped
Wonder if rhulk or nezerec could speak dread. Probably not but I like to think it shares some similarities to the language the lubrean civilization (rhulk’s people) spoke. In my head canon it’s a language that’s a bastardized amalgamation of the different languages the species the dread are based on spoke.
Seems like a nice compilation! I wonder how many unique voicelines each has. Is the water mark symbol on the overthrow UI custom or a existing dread symbol?
It’s not Bungie has made up several languages for there enemy factions: in halo the covenant speak can be translated and same with the fallen in destiny
@@foliagedcarcass I know it's an actual language you can learn, but what I was wondering was whether the voice actors understood the language as they spoke it
@@foliagedcarcassthe dread language maybe is a last minute idea but the dread them selves have been an idea for a long time with the grim technically being a idea since warmind, they just didn’t have them as put together till the release of final shape
Might be wrong but it really sounds like Morla Gorrondona (Eris) may have lended her voice for them to me. Hearing the for the first time, I immediately put her face to the voice. Don't think shee confirmed it or not, but I wouldn't put it past her since whe did the screams for Omnigul back in the day
Here's what I, an amateur linguist and conlanger, could infer from this alone: The syllable structure is most likely CCVC (C=Consonant, V=Vowel). BYF mentions a possible Rosetta Stone being somewhere in the pale heart, something in my gut tells me the Dual Destiny is important. About to run it and see what I can uncover.
@@legume3550 so far nothing, but did some research and turns out the fancy name for the bosses closely related to making noises, I believe it is hidden somewhere in there now, turned boss room upside down, might be somewhere else.
If we had exact spelling of the words we’d be able to translate it. I’m getting Hausa, Hawaiian, Malay. Someone needs to dig into the game files for spelling.
The Subjugators sound feminine don’t they? Not to mention they have a more noble feminine pose. Yes Rhulk had one too but his was more of an arrogant nature. These feel more like female warriors who still retain their noble appearance. That’s just me though. Either way, can’t deny that they are awesome
Not sure if this is the case in all translations but in polish all of them have feminine titles (we have grammatical gender so a word like warrior changes depending on if it's feminine or masculine)
One thing about the subjugators is that in my language, the word it self and accessory words related to them are female versions of it. Food for thought.
As far as I'm concerned it's them talking shit. Which to be fair wouldn't surprise me if it was true. I've decipher some of the Eliksni language and sometimes my friends have to wrangle me cuz I hear one of the captains run his mouth and you just see my big titan ass veer off course to go clobber him for opening his trap. The AI does talk shit like in halo you just have to learn the language. I'm hoping Bungie does the same with the Dread Language. I'm not a linguist by any measure but there are times when these things speak that by their tone and how they are saying some of what they say feels like they are legit calling me out for being a "puny human in a tin suit" and I will actively hunt these assholes when i hear them.
Some of the language has been somewhat decoded, subs are surprisingly well mannered and seem to simply criticize your battle tactics, one of the things they say is "ka ok vik to un van bak dis" which semi-translates to "you element of one means knowledge tryingly loser fall", from what I can tell, they are saying "You know using one element will cause you to fail.", which seems to be referencing how prismatic is very good against witness forces as they have prismatic shields, they respect your capabilities and are providing advice on how to fight better, which is way more interesting then just shit talking. Tormentors on the other hand... they are 100% talking mad shit about you and probably ranting about how they are gonna relish feeding you your own legs.
They probably just did a similar thing for what they did with some Halo enemies. English words backwards, or split up and recombined. Learn your bungie history kiddos.

I was thinking this lol
All i hear is kok
God and Gendoh Bless you brother.
"Krid" sounds like "Die" for some reason. It sounds like something a draugr from Skyrim would say.
I thought the exact same thing
Reminds me of Grineer language from Warframe. Krid is definitely Kill or Die
And the death line of the omen could be "witness forgive me"
Or war KRIEG
I always hear KRIEG as well
Hope this leads to some understanding of the language. I'm hoping some of what the dread say is going to be lore relevant.
Unfortunately, we do not have a reference. Any unknown languages need something similar to a Rosetta Stone, but we've got nothing right now

How tf do we decipher this
Here's what I, an amateur linguist and conlanger, could infer from this alone:

*Plosives: /p b t d k g/
*Fricatives: /v θ ð s z ʃ ʒ (x~χ) h/
*Affricates: /dz dʒ/
*Approximants: /l r~ɾ j w/
Potential vowel inventory, including gemination:
/ɑ ɑː ɛ ɛː i iː o oː u uː/
Overall I'd say it sounds pretty cool, and I'd love to hear more!
Hopefully someone will crack it
What about when they say "gashik tah'so"

I think based on the spacing of the sounds, we can infer that each individual noise is a word.
