    Best informative vid I've seen explaining the basic remote panel functions (the written that comes with the unit is not clear "to me anyway")?
    And the explanation of how these units work is top notch, thank you.

      Got hit with a power surge and my 458 went dead, not only does it not charge battery and it doesn't invert but I also lost the AC pass thru. All ac circuits are dead in Rv. I have 12 volts from battery bank to inverter, I checked glass fuse inside unit which is good. I'm assuming one of the boards went out and was wondering if there is a common board that goes bad.

    Thank you again so much for your time to help us. The top breaker has never tripped, nor have we ever tripped even a 30 amp shore power breaker. It seems to me that a 30amp shore power breaker would trip if some power is not even going through the inverter and supposing that some power is going through the top breaker and enough going through the bottom breaker to trip it. Out of the ten receps in this coach, eight are labeled inverter. Forty-five years ago I attended electricity and electronics school in the navy before serving on a WWII vintage sub. It seems about the only thing that is still the same is Ohm’s law. You are very kind and whether I figure this out or not, you have been refreshing. But, you need to be about your regular work. God bless.

    I just replaced mine with a new Xantrex model 81-2010-12. Goes into a 1999 National Tradewinds RV. The old one had the two circuit breakers on the front and the new one does not. Doesn’t seem to matter though. I was able to switch it out myself and it immediately works properly. The old one had been bypsssed years ago and an Intelipower 9100 was just screwed onto as a battery charger only. It feels good to have this working properly again.

    Excellent video! Thanks for taking the time to produce these films.
    I have an older Xantrex 2412 (might have the wrong model number...2400W-12V) that was installed in a log cabin I bought in 2018. In the summer of 2018 I had a swamp cooler running on the front porch and water leaked through the floor boards of the porch and got into the inverter located below the porch in the basement. The generator was in service at the time of the incident. The inverter quit working of course and now when I test start it it gives an error code which I believe means the transfer relay didn't switch to the "invert" position. I've had no luck trying to either buy the right part or finding anyone interested in trying to fix it. I've been getting by with a smaller cheap inverter 1000W and a couple battery chargers. I would really like to get it fixed if possible since I took the cover off and it doesn't smell or appear damaged. The cover and all is currently all back together properly.

    Are there any remote panels other than the basic remote that work with Freedom 458? I read in a xantrex manual the Freedom X /XC remotes work, however a xantrex phone tech informed me it des not? He also said the basic remote is the only remote that interfaces with Freedom 458.

    PLEASE PLEASE post how to set the battery type to wet, nothing I try moves it from blinking gel. Also ideas why I keep blowing the 250MA/250v fuse on ac board. Fuse was never an issue until keystone garage disconnected batteries to access and fix slide rail, now anything over 2 weeks on shore power blows the fuse. To point I don’t screw cover down so I can pop a fuse in. I just bought a new FDM 458 but waiting to creat a new harness so I can quickly swap between the two. Either that or figure what connector besides a nut I can use to join 23:12 harness to inverter wires.

    I just found (and subscribed) to your channel, your understanding and ability to explain these inverters is truly impressive. I'm wondering if you can lend some insight into an issue I'm having? I have an older (2003) freedom combi. The inverter keeps turning itself on and drawing the batteries down. I've owned this RV for the last 12 years and don't remember this issue prior to about three years ago. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
    As a side note, mine doesn't have the two breakers on the front of the case like the ones in your video

    Excellent video, thanks for the detail. In your third way to turn the inverter on, you plugged into the aux input. Could you please let me know what the plug part number is? My Freedom 25 is mounted in a tight spot on my boat, and this information would save me from trying to squeeze myself into a spot close enough to guess what it might be. If you can respond, that would be very helpful. Many thanks!

    Great and very informative. I replaced a 458-2000 with the remote control. I went with a 458-2500 2channels in and 2 out. The original problem was charging but not inverting. Line power went in, and charging seemed normal (lots of buzzing, but you told me the 30 amp setting made it charge a lot). That might explain why the seller of this motorhome had gallons of distilled water on hand.
    I'm afraid to make the same mistakes and damage the new inverter. I took the old one apart and found visually that most or all the transistors on the inverter board had shorted, melted down, or blew up, still bolted to the inverter heat sinks. What do you think may have caused this massive destruction of the sine-wave power out components? Could they have back-fed AC into the output? I'm not really confident in the delay (break before make) functions of the transfer switch. It seems to delay a switch bringing the generator on-line, but I'm afraid to invert while applying any outside power source, line or generator. Thanks for the confidence in shutting off the inverter by just pressing the invert button on the remote. I can then start the generator and some air conditioners with it off.
    Any thoughts about all those burned up transistors? Have you seen this before? Thanks. Don

    I just got a 458 2000W with a problem. I am able to troubleshoot myself but would like to get some schematics or at least know where to look for the symptoms I have. The inverter is not working and the symptoms are a blinking Charge LED and a blinking Low Voltage LED. Both are blinking at the same rate. The DC voltage at the terminals is the Normal 12.6v. As we all know you do have to be careful with lithium batteries. Normally the answer would be no because the Freedom unit does not have a constant voltage/current setting but, if you buy lithium batteries that have internal management circuitry then it should be ok. Be sure to check with the battery manufacturer about this.

    I have a freedom combi 458 inverter/charger that is stuck in gel mode. I think it might be the 20D since it has 20 and 15amp AC out flip fuses and 25 Amp inverter/charger pop out fuse. It won' switch mode to wet cell mode. I tried unplugging shore power and removing house and chasing batteries and red and black terminals for several hours to charge batteries outside the RV but no change. Any suggestion on repair of a board or what board to replace? I've repaired a broken traces in a couple of refrigerator eyebrow cards before and have some beginner soldering skills. Hello,
    I just watched your very educational video on the Xrantrex 458 and was impressed with your knowlege . I have that model in my motorhome and it works great. I have a battery voltage display that normally shows my battery state such as 13.20v, etc. Lately, when I check my display, it flashes the 13.20v then goes to 6.0 v dc. I don't know how this happened but I would like to get it back to the 13.20v display as this allows me to know when my batteries get near the 50% range of 12.10v. This new display doesn't mean anything to me as how low my batteries are. I don't know if resetting would correct the problem but I couldn't find anyway to reset it. As I mentioned, when I push the display switch, the 13.20v flashes but the goes to the 6.9 v dc mode. Thanks for your efforts to educate us. Sincerely, Frank

    I have a rather unique question that I can’t find in the manual/internet. My RV is using a Bi-Directional Isolator Relay Delay (BIRD) as a controller to activate a relay which is designed to connect to house and chassis batteries in order to charge together. On the BIRD there’s an input for genset, which is to disconnect the two sets of batteries when both the engine is running (alternator charging) and the Xantrex is charging so the two are not fighting each other. So the question is: is there a way to get a 12v signal out of the Xantrex when it is in charge mode? If I have to solder a lead to the circuit board, that’s fine. Thanks and great informative video.

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could tie across the charger relay coil. It is a 12 volt coil and is the relay toward the top of the unit that ties to the red wire coming out of the transformer.

    Nice video! I have been messing w a freedom 10 that i just got and hooked up 220 on accident. Everything seems to still work perfect expect it is not letting the ac shore power through anymore. Most people on the forums agree at this point that the transfer relay has to be the culprit. Even w a dose of 220 my fuses were not blown. Any help is appreciated and if I can not get it where are you located? I can't find your shop location or contact info on here. Thanks again.

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The transfer relay runs on 12 volts and would not be effected by the over voltage event. Most likely it has fried your input transformer. We can change this for you if you send us the unit. Give us a call to discuss it. 573-814-3131

    HELP … AC in light no longer on after park replaced 50 amp breaker on post. It doesn’t light even if I use dog bone to use 30 amp on post, nor when I fire up generator. I have a fluke but ignorant on use. Desperate for help troubleshoot to save this 1 week beach vacation. I suspect I’m using battery even though I’m connected to pedestal. Will pay for resolution and hand holding for fluke settings and placement. Tiffin 2004 phaeton, xantrax 458 25 button bottom right is in, inverter light solid, charger blinking indicating no AC current but safeguard at pedestal says all go and alive no faults (using 30amp dog bone to 50amp surge protector , will bring in slides tomorrow (if possible) to try different pedestal) two top green lights inverter solid and charger blinking and right two lights dark. Freedom remote installed inside cab). Removal of front center bottom plate doesn’t look cooked or disconnected wires but not going to poke around without direction. All was well until 50 amp pedestal breaker barfed which threw the safe guard surge protector to issue a neural fault. I do not know how to set fluke setting or placement to check breakers.

    A very strange problem. I would check to make sure it is not in the 'search watts' mode. Or it may be a loose connection that is being effected by the movement of the breakers. Switch off all input and output breakers an check the wire nuts inside the AC wiring compartment. After that it may be a bad relay solder connection on the AC power board inside.

      With no load the inverter will make a ticking sound. If you put a load on it like a 100 watt light bulb the inverter will come on. TVs and appliances like microwaves often will not start the inverter. The search mode can be shut off with the remote. Hold the setup button until the lights change positions. Press the invert button multiple times until the light is at the bottom

    This is an awesome video. I have the same interview/converter. I do have a question: When plugged into shore power, is there a reason to keep the Inverter on? I noticed that around 13:40 of the video when you explained the charging function, you turned on the shore power and the inverter light was on, on the remote (and blinking in standby mode). On my motorhome, when plugged in shore power or the generator is running, the Inverter is off. Im thinking the inverter would be of use for boon-docking or loss of shore power. Or does it hurt to keep the inverter on and just let it stay in standby mode?

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      These inverters are designed to be on all the time. The only reason to shut them off would be if the RV will not be plugged in during long term storage.

      I have run them on the bench this way for short periods without any problems. Some inverters will not pass AC without a battery. Some inverters will run what is called 'dead battery boot' so you will still have power. It should not hurt anything to run it this way.

    • @pcselectronics5423

      Refrigerators are not usually connected to the inverter so you should check this by switching off your inverter and the inverter input breaker. It does sound like the inverter is not charging the batteries. So again check the inverter input circuit breaker in your AC electrical panel and your inverter battery fuse. After that you may need to go inside the inverter to check fuses or send it in for repair.

      Always check you battery fuse first. This is the large fuse near the inverter or in the battery compartment. Be sure you have AC in by checking your 30 amp breaker in your circuit panel. • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are getting power to your TV, microwave and kitchen outlet then the inverter is ok. If not then there is a problem with the inverter pass-through relay. If the inverter is ok then changing the transfer switch should have fixed your problem. If you have an Intellitec EMS system then the problem may be the relay for that system located inside your AC breaker panel.

    Thank you for the video, it was very helpful. I have the same unit and the bottom output breaker trips often. The coach is 50amp, but even plugged into 30amp service, the bottom breaker trips. One RV tech told me it may be weak. Can you show how to replace the breakers and where to get them. Also, could the wires from the breakers be switched at the ac breakers in the coach so the top and bottom breakers trade loads? They are both 20amps. Thanks so much.

      Yes you could swap the circuits to see if that solves your problem. Changing the breaker would require the removal of the AC board which is not very easy as there are a lot of wires to deal with. I do not have a part number for the breakers at this moment I will see if I can post one later.

      PCS Electronics Thank you for the quick response. I am sure you receive many requests. We have a 2005 Allegro Bus that we purchased five months ago, but we have more electrical issues with this 50amp coach than I had with my 30amp Fleetwood Discovery. By issues I primarily mean the breaker problem. In fact, I don’t understand why there are just two 20 amp breakers on the Xantrex for a 50 amp coach. Does all the shore power pass through the Xantrex? Thanks again so much.

      No only a few items are connected to the inverter. Usually they are the TV and stereo system, Microwave oven, and one outlet for the coffee maker. Sometimes the refrigerator if it is not a residential model. Air conditioners and most outlets and battery charging are straight to shore power. The part number for the 20 Amp circuit breaker is:
      CA1-B0-24-615-121-KG but none of the distributors I checked had them in stock.

    This is a great video. I have the Freedom Combi in a 2002 motorhome and the Remote stopped working. Completely dark. Inverter and charger still work fine controlled from the front of the unit. I have tried a replacement cable with no luck. Is there any way I can isolate between the remote being bad vs the control board being bad? Or is there anything else you can suggest that I can try. Thanks in advance.

    I have a freedom 458 that the inverter is working, but the charger isn't. I press the setup button to make it charge at about 13.5 volts. After about 5 seconds it quits charging. Well, the remote panel indicators above voltage light in amber to the level of 12.5 or so.... probably what the batteries are reading. where should I be looking for problems? I have removed the unit from m y motor home... and have the case open. AC board?

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the problem is most likely on the AC board. You are looking for a blown fuse, bad solder connections or the small transformer may be bad.

    I keep blowing the quarter amp fuse on the ac board. (no batt. charging) Unable to find the proper slow burn fuse except on amazon and the quality is bad. Even tried the half amp',same deal. What does this fuse protect? What could be causing it to blow? The first fuse lasted a good five minutes so its not a short. What am i endangering by bypassing it? Also if i remove the entire unit for service would i be able to still use the 12v house system temporarily or does it run through the inverter? Thx . btw--great video

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuse protects the small AC input transformer which powers the inverter circuitry when on shore power. The transformer is probably going bad or you have a problem on one of the systems that the transformer supplies. Bypassing would just cause the faulty element to burn up. The inverter is the charger so to continue to use 12 volt power without the inverter you would have to connect a battery charger to the batteries and keep the load at or below the charger output power.

    I just bought a boat with this unit installed. My question is, is there any way to stop the buzzing sound?? It's driving my wife crazy. Is this inherent to this unit?

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they all buzz a little and it may get worse as the unit ages. There are some rubber strips installed between the cover and the chassis of the inverter that reduce noise. These may have fallen out. You can also just shut it off at night if you have enough battery to last that long.

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should be a separate sub panel with breakers for the inverter only. Sometimes this is located near the inverter or it may be near your main AC breaker panel.

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally this light is only on when the inverter is on and you are powering a load or if you are on shore power and the battery is charging. This light is telling you that the charge current is less than 10 amps and the batteries are almost fully charged. The invert LED should only be on when inverting . If your remote is not working correctly you may have a bad serial driver IC on the control board. Call if you have any more questions or need a repair.

    My fault light keeps coming on On remote board it is reading 15+ volts I have tried to reset by unhooking battery post & unplugging remote connector on the unit. I hear the unit humming but don't hear the fan on thinking it may be a fuse or something inside. Have you any thoughts on my issue.

      It is strange to have the fault LED on but the unit continues to operate. I would monitor the system to be sure all is well and the battery voltage drops when it is done charging. Maybe a controller malfunction.

    I have a freedom 30 marine combi, i think I’ve done everything to get to invert, but no output, the remote lights up as stated in the owners manual, I’ve installed 6 new, 6 volt batteries, they are connected correctly. It is not in search watts mode. I bought my houseboat and the inverter was factory installed, but it was not used by previous owners for 8 years. The inverter is 18 yrs. old. Assuming it is a problem with the inverter is a inverter that old worth repairing,

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are good units and usually worth repairing but 18 years is a long time to be near the water. The unit my have a corrosion problem. If you open it up and it looks clean inside I would fix it. Otherwise get a new one. They still sell this exact model which makes it easy to swap out. If you would like us to repair it call 573-814-3131.

    I loose AC to all my inverter 110 outlets in motorhome while generator or shore power is on, but turn AC off and inverters turns on and all the 110 outlets work... is the automatic transfer switch in it bad ? I have a xantrex 458 inverter/ charger , thanks for any help you can give me

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This means the transfer relay in your inverter is not working. There are a number of reasons this could happen. There are internal fuses that could be checked if you are ok with going inside the inverter. Be sure to disconnect the battery and all AC power must be off. If they are ok the unit will need further service.

    Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have another problem. I have a Xantrex 458 / 25 that won't charge the batteries. The light fault code is this. CHARGE LIGHT BLINKS ABOUT 1 BLINK PER SECOND AND THE LOW BATTERY LIGHT FLASHES RAPIDLY. The manual says only, "Battery Ripple" and "Warning". Could you possible give me a direction to go. If I can fix it myself (fuse or something simple) that would be great but if its the inverter can I send it to you to be repaired? Thank you so much for your help in advance.

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it is in fact a battery ripple warning then you need to check for loose or corroded battery connections. If everything checks ok then the control board may have a problem. In that case you would have to send it in for repair. Please call for shipping instructions. PCS Electronics 573-814-3131

    Hey, Thanks for the great video. I have this same unit, and i'm having an issue with low voltage output. I called Xantrex and they gave me the typical "your meter is probably not reading the modified sign wave" responce. But, I've had my industrial electrician father-in-law test with his fancy meter, and it still shows between 98v-107v. Also, I know something is not right as my CPAP machine (which has worked off this inverter in the past) will either not power up, or will power off as soon as I engage it.
    When i try to search for anything about low voltage on this unit, I only get the same "meter can't read a Modified Sign Wave" conclusion. Any ideas?
    Also, every time i open my battery compartment, i feel like there is a lot of leaked battery acid. Any chance these issues are connected?
    Also, we just discovered that a wirenut in my fuse box was melted. One of the wires had a pre-printed "shore" lable. Not sure where in the chain this connection was in reference to the transfer switch, but the 2 wires were barly touching. I'm sure that wasn' helping.

    • @pcselectronics5423
      @pcselectronics5423  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may need a "True RMS" meter to get a correct reading. Another reason is that it is in "Idle Mode" (sometimes called "search watts"). Place a load such as a 100 watt light bulb or a small space heater on it while you are taking your measurement. If you shut off the Idle Mode feature and you still have a problem it may need service.
      The battery leakage could be caused by overcharging. You will have to monitor the battery voltage during charging and be sure it drops down to float after no more than two hours for a 400 amp hour battery pack (four batteries). Check the amp hour setting in the "set up". All of this should be covered in my videos.
      The bad connection you found would only effect the battery charger and pass through AC. The battery charger can draw a lot of current for a long period and can melt bad connections.

      PCS Electronics thanks for the reply. I’ll try adding a load to it. But, we have tested with a true sign wave meter.
