How did you even manage to get a 68 Jazz bass, must have cost a small fortune. That tone is just so perfect 👌
It's very important to recognize that the Fender has an alder body and rosewood fingerboard, versus the ash body and Maple fingerboards on the other instruments. That's is going to change a lot in terms of tone. Also, would have been nice to hear some fingerstyle on all the instruments as well.
That said, I think the Fender and Sadowsky are clearly the two best options in this video.

That Fender tone is hard to beat. You must remember, it all started with Fender. The Sadowsky and the Performance basses sound great but they are both expensive copies of the original and they both have maple necks/fingerboards which is going to give them a little more brightness and snap.

Props to Fender and their history BUT if you listen through nice headphones the Sad wins in just about any category of tone analysis you could want to discuss. Easiest to point out is just less unwanted "noise" ringing through the pickups.
Yeah, the Fender easily wins through my Grado headphones - a great recording bass. Those Performance basses sound wonderful in live situations!
What strings did you use on the Sadowsky and the vintage fender?
@@NRG2 James Jamerson of the funk brothers fixed that by putting a sponge down there by the pick ups in studio recordings or believe it or not played an upright double bass instead.
I really respect each sound here. I wish I could own them all. Very hard to rate them. Really like modern sound. However this fender is like The Sound of all times. It's just when you listen to a Bass, everything you want to hear is there. No sacrifice on LoWs mids and highs. Performance are great basses but the Sadowsky has more growl and punch for me. On this one I would def go Fender #1 Sadowsky #2 Performance #3. Think about this this Fender sound is 49 years old and it's spot on, still in the game.

I guarantee you that 68 Fender Jazz raised some eyebrows.. The Sads where beasting for sure.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing this! We don't see enough of these comparisons. All of them are great basses. How did you set the EQ for the Sadowsky and Performance? All flat? Just asking because any thought wouldn't be accurate if they are both set differently.

Original fender tone wins all the way without any doubt.
There's something magical in Fender Jazz Bass build quality, playability, and of course, the famous distinctive Jazz Bass tone.
The others are bunch of followers that can only imitate and alter the Fender tone slightly.

All basses are good here. But my opinions are :
1. More modern, a bit scooped JB sound, this is the most versatile IMO out of all the 3 basses here
2. Has that midrange in your face sound, like most vintage fender instruments (at least from a bunch i've tried)
3. Softer attack, mellow tone

If we're talking a live mix with many instruments in the band, the Sadowsky wins every time. The Fender would we a great studio bass, though . . .

Not a fair comparison cause Sadowsky and Performance are 5 strings and Fender is 4 string. I think that I like Fender sound the most. It sounds polite while cutting through and not being trebly

Fender well sounds like a Fender, good stuff...the Sadowsky sounds like a well Sadowsky (Fender on Roids). Didn't care for the Perf bass.

The Fender has a nasally tone while the Sadowsky has more depth like in the throat while the Performance bass has real growl. Perhaps the two active basses can dial in their tone more while the Fender has that classic tone. The Performance one stands out to me.

Listen to the first two again, they are EQ'd the same, there is almost no difference between the Sadowsky and Fender. If anything the Fender's pickups sound better.

That 68 JB sounds like 70 JB.
Yup, 60 JB sounds less zingy on top end which I personally find it more pleasant on ear

펜더가 정말 좋습니다. 뭐가 더 좋다라기보다 각자의 개성을 더 도드라지게 하고 싶었습니다 ㅎㅎ
