Is it Lonely Being a Landscape Photographer?

  • Although it can be very therapeutic doing landscape photography on your own, there is no denying that sometimes it is nice to have someone to share the experience with.
In this video I team up with Adam (also known as Wadger Catcher) and head to Rattray Head in Aberdeenshire, for a morning of photography and ask him what his feelings are on the topic.

I mainly do wildlife and some landscape work. Most times I'm with my wife but I also value the solitude of the forest. As a general statement, I don't relate to most people that well which is why I never even thought of taking up wedding or portrait photography. I've found the quickest way to to make a small fortune at wildlife photography is to start with a large fortune and work your way down. However, the therapy of the woods is by far the best medicine.

Hi Kim, firstly apologies...I've been subscribed to your channel from the beginning of your journey and have to admit I don't watch your videos regularly enough now. I started vlogging a year and a half ago now, and people like Adam and others have really helped me develop and push my photography further. I love being out on my own with my camera and must admit, its much easier to vlog on your own as well as you can focus on your story, b roll etc however I love getting out with other togs. I have met up with several in the last 12 months, both vloggers and subscribers and they have all been thoroughly enjoyable days out. I've met physically and virtually (via SM) so many other landscape photographers now many of which I now class as good friends. Its a great community and its great to be part of it. Anyway, great vlog....your videography is really good now and combined with your awesome images and story telling, you've got a top channel!

Thank you very much for your kind words and for coming back to watch this video. It's great to hear what a positive experience you have had through TH-cam in meeting others and making connections. It certainly can be good for that. I know there is an amazing community down in certain parts of England - sadly very little up here but thats life I guess. Thanks again and all the best with the continued growth and adventures on your channel.

Kim Grant Thanks Kim, but I don’t think the community is location limited. Clearly it’s easier to meet up with other photographers if they live local to you, however the online community is national and even international! Adam is a good example of someone I’ve not yet met, but consider him on ‘online’ friend purely due to the interaction on TH-cam, Facebook, Twitter and other channels. I recommend you join the YouTogs facebook group which is one of many!

haha i always wondered why the name Wadger, the actual answer is far better than anything i could think of!! Regarding landscape photography being lonely. For me personally i find going out being on my own relaxing and gives me the chance to unwind from work and family etc. That being said i do enjoy meeting up with fellow photographers. Its a good chance to talk photography which isn't as easily done at work or home. I am looking forward to getting to the stage of doing collabs with other youtubers and if you're ever down south get in touch!! 😁

It's always a balance between solitude and loneliness. At least for me that is. Most of the time I enjoy the solitude and feel I get better results when I am on my own. When the loneliness kicks in, either I wont go out or I'll try and find someone to come along (not necesarily a photographer). Plus as you mentioned there's always something to be gained by going out with a fellow photographer!

    • @kimgrantphotography

Hi Kim interesting question and now I've had time to think about it my answer would be I don't get or feel lonely when I'm out and about on my own infact I tend to enjoy the solitude. I retired at the end of March 2019 and for the most part I have just enjoyed doing what I want with out the distraction of others but still have my family and friends so I get the best of both worlds. As for this collaboration video I enjoyed it very much now as for the question although I've kept my answer short it really made me think to the point I almost felt I could write a book on it. Until next time take care my friend.

I totally agree it can be lonely. It would be so nice to have someone along sometimes, but here where I live, other photographers seem to shy away from sharing the experience. It's sad because I think it can be a good way of keeping your ideas fresh by sharing creative thoughts.

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I guess for many photography is an escape from life and time to relax and unwind away from others. But then for many who do it on their own a lot, it can be nice to share with others from time to time. I hope that somehow you can meet other who may wish to share it with you. Camera clubs can be a good place to look.

Really interesting topic in this video, I have been into photography for 3 years, 2 years were spent by myself or on paid courses, then in 2019 I found Paul Compton's channel and his LVA group and I have been able to meet up with so many new people and find friends who enjoy my hobby which is great because as you said in your video, it forces you to get out in every condition, including shooting in the rain which previously I would have packed up and gone home.

Hi Kim. I think I must be doing it wrong! I don't really get lonely, possibly because I have my dog with me pretty much all the time. Even without him I just enjoy being out. That is not to say I don't like being with other people. I have had a great time with others, especially if my humour is allowed to come out to play. (Its bad).
I rarely do the long hikes that some photographers do, so might not be so affected by solitude. I do often wish I was out at the crack of dawn, catching sunrise from an isolated beach miles from anywhere. Unfortunately Adam and I seem to suffer the same issues regarding getting up early when a duvet is more comfortable. :-)

Hi Kim, whilst I too enjoy the solitude of photographing alone, it is nice to go out with like-minded friends on a shoot too. A couple of years ago I joined a photography club for the 1st time in my life & haven't looked back since. Made loads of new friends & often one or two of us (or considerably more!) will go out on a shoot together. My photography's improved no end and there's no groans if I get out a 10 stop filter for 'just one more long exposure' ! My wife has come to dread the words tripod & long exposure ...

I normally go out on my own, partly because I don't know any other photographers, and partly because I like to be on my own timeline. My wife doesn't tend to appreciate waiting around for me when it's cold out, so she doesn't join me too often. When I shoot sunrise, sunset, or astro anywhere out in the wilderness, I prefer having someone with me because the cougars here in Oregon scare me, and having someone else makes it less scary.

I could not properly call myself a photographer, but I take occasional pics to complement my writing. On solitary walks, I get inspired to write some poetry and meditations, and find the solitude is very conducive to that. However, I find an occasional recurrence in my paltry poetry of the idea of looking together and sharing the same experience of the moment, rather than just trying to convey something of it afterwards by sharing what I have written or photographed. Most of what I do is for my own recollection, but it is good to sometimes share-although it is not guaranteed that people will come near to the experience through my words and pictures.

Great to discover your channel Kim. A lonely pursuit? I’m torn on this one. Yes it’s great to meet like minded people, but I also treasure the time to be alone and fully immerse myself in the moment and the task of shooting, whether it be stills or video. I have a huge amount to learn and it’s a great way of unwinding and forgetting all of life’s trials and tribulations.

Interesting. I photograph for my own interest/pleasure, nature is first and foremost the grand inspiration for grabbing images. Had parents who were into adventure; camping, motorcycling, ocean & mountains. 6 weeks of road travels in the western states of the US in the early 90's and visited numerous national parks and awe struck with grand views and interesting geology, then visiting the visitor centers at those parks and saw the pro. shots of that park and wanted to capture my own visuals due to their incredibly inspiring shots - I wanted to have first hand memories of the places and sites in a dramatic way that I experienced. I certainly don't mind solo road trips to locations to camp and gather pics - have not met others with such a strong pull to the natural environment as I have - yet . . . Central coast of CA, San Luis Obispo, if on the west coast, you really should think about the coast line for shots! (keep this to yourself). Have a pleasant 2020.

There is a very distinct difference between loneliness and wanting to share. I am often times alone but feel no need to share. However there are times I am alone and would want to share the where and why while I am where I am. I am not feeling loneliness at those times... I am only alone. If you care to share with and along with another, not willing to do so is not a willingness to be wallowing in loneliness. Careful your words and message is important I do feel.

Hi Kim. I do like my own company as a rule but as a very amateur photographer I would, now and again, like to go out and about with someone with a lot more experience. I'm sure I'd learn so much more. I retired a few weeks ago and am looking to join the occasional workshop to improve my skills. I live in Edinburgh and there is an organisation called the U3A ( University of the 3rd Age.) for retired people which I've joined. There are many groups in this organisation one of which is photography. Great video and I do like that you tell us the details of your shots. Aperture, speed etc.

There are some beautiful beaches in Caithness like Keiss Sands and wonderful rugged coastlines such as the cliffs around Duncansbay Head and Dunnet Head. Sunsets to die for. Perfect for your photographic talents.

Hi Kim, I’ve always been a wee bit of a walker (careful people) anyway, I adore the solitude, isolation and weather exposure, however I don’t feel alone as I feel part of the landscape and environment that I walk in.
I just decided to take up photography before Christmas so I guess I’d love to walk learn and shoot with someone who knows how to work a camera. So there are benefits alone and together.
If you ever fancy giving a tutorial group session let me know, would love to learn from you.

Kim, I know just how you feel and although I really do enjoy shooting by my self and do it a lot it can get lonely at times. I have a few friends that are very good photographers and when I get together with one of them it seems very enjoyable. I'll take the best of both as they happen I guess. I have found that I probably make my best images when I'm alone or at least I think I do. I enjoyed watching this and I'm a new subscriber now. Thank you and all the best in 2020.

I've very rarely made it out with another photographer, partially due to my weekend and 2nd shift work schedule.
This summer I volunteered to assist with a local nature preserve's marsh bird survey partially as a way to put that "must get out of bed I'm meeting someone before dawn" pressure on myself. Apparently getting up that early leads to long term delusion as I took a pair of pictures that morning I really like but ... :-\

At the same there I've had moments when I've experienced an amazing moment and I would love to shout out to someone to come and see. Usually when I'm shooting locally I'm alone. But when I travel to distance places I go with someone or I don't go.

Exactly Kim. Quite sometimes, we feel lonely and would like to have someone with us, especially another photographer to share experiences with. Sometimes I challenge people to accompany me, but I have not been successful with this. But it's walking alone in the woods, in the woods, in the mountains. I invite you to join me in the mystical Serra de SIntra, Portugal.

I feel quite the opposite: being alone early in the morning enjoying the silence and the scenery while the world slowly wakes up is something I enjoy very much. I don't get or feel lonely at all. I don't have the time to feel lonely: I'm too busy looking for a great composition or fine tuning a composition. To me it is like an escape from the busy and hectic world. I also find that I'm a better photographer when I'm alone out and about. Being alone removes distractions and I can fully focus on my landscape photography.

Thank you for sharing Hibon. It's very inspiring to hear your thoughts. I too used to feel that way when I had a full time job, as I used photography as an escape and past time to switch off from day to day life. Now that I do it a lot, I find I miss the company of others from time to time, so I enjoy meeting and creating with others where possible. I feel it's all about finding the balance and what works for you :) Thanks again.

A funny paradox...when I go out and shoot with others (doesn't happen very often), I feel like I shoot too slow and must speed up for them. When my wife or anyone else tags along, I feel like I shoot to fast and should slow down to get proper shots. Either way...I shoot too fast.
