We’ve really never been in a grimmer time in the payday community. Like even during the flops of raid ww2 and their walking dead game it wasn’t this bad
I can just...hear the disappointment in your voice, man. And if not being starbreeze partnered leads to more videos such as this, then bring it on, i'm all here for the ramble and thoughts on the game.
You know the situation is bad for Payday 3 when people went from the outlook of "We have Payday 3 at home" towards Crime Boss Rockay City to actual excitement, but like Payday 3 Crime Boss Stagnated for too long after the Steam release and now the DLCs are mainly character reskins and gun packs, neither game is in a good spot and once Den of Wolves releases people will rush to that because the only other options are coasting along clinging to life.
Well said. I've played since the launch of PDTH and bought pretty much everything Overkill/Starbreeze made for the franchise; like you, I've made long lasting friendships and incredible memories that I will cherish forever because of the quality content they put out in their prime. So to see PD3 in the state it's in, managed so poorly by people who hardly recognise their fans or dare to even look in the mirror at what they wish to become despite what they actually are (i.e. stop expanding, start reinforcing), is absolutely heartbreaking. I really wish everything will turn out fine but I'm not holding out any hope. Every announcement, every business decision, and every communication they make to the community has me skeptical and has ultimately left me disappointed. They've ignored their partners, their fans, and most of all their history which is what made Payday such a blast to play. I'd like to be optimistic and say that if the fans and influential content creators make enough noise then significant change will come - but we did that and it wasn't enough. The only people that can save Payday are Starbreeze. And that has me very, very worried.
i honestly dont get how starbreeze can think other projects can be successful in any way they have no reputation outside of payday and negative consumer trust at this point
two outcomes i can hope for here: one: they pull their shit together, payday 3 becomes a fantastic game which everyone loves two: the former overkill staff who left make their own heisting game with blackjack and hookers, combining the best elements of pd:th and payday two to make the best crime game to ever exist
Copy pasting my comment from under Kknowley's video: Remember when I said that I would want for the Payday IP to be sold before it's too late? Starbreeze clarified that they don't want to get rid of it, as they claim it's still their top priority. I honestly disagree, given their actions, and I'm not the only one to think so. I still believe that selling the IP is the only realistic solution of keeping the series alive one way or another. Before you ask, no, I don't think 10 Chambers should take over, even if its owners are Ulf Andersson and Simon Viklund. Ulf developed trauma from even working on the game under Bo Andersson's watch and that's why he quit Starbreeze a decade ago in the first place. Also, 10 Chambers' majority shareholder is Tencent and I don't see anything positive coming out of it.
TBF is there any big publisher or developer that has good will? Larian maybe, but that is it and their games are very different from what PD3 is. Doubting any company who wants the IP, has means of acquiring it and fixing it and having good reputation exists
from what i heard tencent is just bought game studios left and right, but they wont touch the kitchen, so at most its tencent giving them funds to make den of wolves
Not gonna lie. I always enjoyed the funny videos that you made about payday. Always watched them whenever something new came up. Seeing a video like this from you, really hits hard. Payday as a whole is just not the same as I once knew. As someone who also loves payday, seeing it go down like this is genuinely upsetting. Can only hope that it will turn around some day, but that's just me cooping
They have failed every game since Payday 2, and their only Major IP is being tossed out instead of an unproven property we as consumers know absolutely nothing about, while vultures hover around looking to snack on what Bank Heist Enthusiasts remain. Starbreeze CANNOT do this. I'm not saying this in the 'nooo, corpo bad!' I'm saying this in the sense that they *literally* will not have the income to sustain themselves long enough to release this new project, even assuming said project is successful (which, according to recent history, is a hell of a gamble) The only realistic move Starbreeze can make is doubling and tripling-down on Payday 3 and try to make it into the game the community wants it to be: A true successor to Payday 2. If they fail to realize this, all that awaits them is total bankruptcy.
as someone who played lots of PDTH and payday 2, i didn't purchase 3 on release and was happy i hadn't done so after a few months. to this day i still see no reason to dip my toes into payday 3 simply based on the current community outlook -- and even then, it'd need to be a hefty sale for me to consider. i honestly do not expect payday 3's live service to last past calendar 2025. it's a massive shame. sometimes overlooked is the seriously bad-for-consumer practices of payday 2, but many of us quickly disheveled with payday 3 were led to that point from payday 2's monetization. maybe SB assumed they could get another goldmine without the effort that made payday 2 have charm
Shaw spent 3 hours to try and say "Bo bad" when, despite his departure, Overkill is still small fry trying to act like they're AAA. Add onto the fact that what we *do* know is coming addresses none of the game's core issues (and risks exascerbating them) tells me that no one knows what they're doing. Top-down they're rotten to the core with incompetency. Good vid!
To be fair, Bo kinda put them in that inescapable hole they can't crawl out of. Shaw took a shit ton of pot shots at how Almir did fuck all for the development of Payday and was a general negative to the community.
That "small fry trying to act like they're AAA" part couldn't be more correct, payday 3 has the first impressions of an AAA game (great graphics, simple yet satisfying gunplay, and the "premium" currencies thrown around) but the more you play the more it resembles an indie studio's 90 years worth of work. It feels like an indie rougelike with the funny "10% more dmg when x, 25% more movespeed after y when z is active"
only learned what the word 'enshittification' meant as of yesterday but now that I know what it means, the agony of understanding why companies do things like this is apparent
Enshittification has nothing to do with Payday 3. If Payday 3 started off peak and was like a 10/10 and it slowly got yo it's current state it would, but if anything it's actually improved significantly since launch.
@Pidgeonsofwar payday 1 started pretty good, but 2 was peak 3 was cashing in that good will Their new projects... I don't think they'll get the company anywhere but we'll see
as someone who picked up payday2 from 2014 i can relate. i wish payday 3 was atleast half of what payday 2 is. i sincerly hope the franchise doesn't go out like this cause i met a lot of good people during my thousands of hours
Although it's on Roblox, you could play notoriety since starbreeze removed the copyright claim on it and is now partners with the developers of notoriety and it gives the Payday 2 experience but with more maps and features, although I haven't played it yet since I'm waiting for the console port
This is the best worst thing that could happen and that's the sad part. I think there was a legitimate idea to just support Payday 2 forever and I wish they just did that instead at this point. There's 10 years of content updates on top of the base game that already took development time. It's impossible to match the amount of content or quality that Payday 2 has with the time frame they've been given. I don't think anyone would have been really upset with them just saying "fuck it Payday 2 forever." It's a kind of lightning in a bottle that I dont think can be captured again.
I would boycott the hell out of them. It would be an active admittance of failure on their end, and I guarantee you every gun would be powercrept so hard that DSOD could be done on autopilot
When the "technical beta" (read: limited-time demo) for Payday 3 was running, I played through it a few times and generally enjoyed myself, but couldn't shake the feeling that there wasn't much to it, and that the always-online aspect was going to ruin my enjoyment of it. Based on that gut feeling, I decided not to pre-order a game I had been waiting on for years and years, and instead wait for the reviews to roll in post-release before buying. That turned out to be the right choice, as we can all see, and for a while I was quite smug about seeing it coming, being the absolute gigabrain genius who predicted that a video game would be bad. That feeling is long gone now, replaced with a somber disappointment, knowing that a lot of customers put their good faith into a company that was poised and ready to abuse it. I don't think this video has said anything I haven't thought before, but it is a grim reminder that actually, it's a bad thing when something you were excited for turns out to suck. Nothing gets fixed by dunking on people who were led into buying and investing their time into a bad product, as I once did - in fact, it just shifts the blame onto them, instead of the company that made the game. Starbreeze have proven time and time again that they're willing to use your investment in their series to make quick buck after quick buck, and the only way they'll stop is if you revoke that investment. If they're not interested in keeping the game alive, then you shouldn't be either, and as long as people are playing, it won't get better. Maybe they finally fix the game, maybe the series just dies forever and we all move on to something new, but anything's better than this weird life-support state Payday is in. Thanks for reading my ramblings. I wish Payday 3 was good, too. Also do another modding payday 2 video
Boys in Blue could have turned the game around if the servers weren't down for 10 FUCKING hours because of no offline mode and mandatory server connection.
Payday 2 was pretty barebones at launch, but it was also just fun to play. I put so much time into Payday 2 before they added infamy, i didn't even unlock everything in Payday 3 because it just wasnt fun
Honestly, I think you phrased all this very well. It's a game that needs a lot of effort and work put into it, that could be absolutely improved, and it gets shafted due to the short-sighted executive management just wanting a quick buck with no investment. I really do hope this game actually goes well. There is goddamn potential. But I'm not paying money on hypotheticals, I'm only gonna buy Payday 3 once it proves itself. I also do appreciate the multifaceted look into what needs improvement and what has been kinda done better instead of dismissing the whole game as "a complete cash grab of a sequel". Point is, good video Maria. I too hope this video ages like milk.
Thank you for making this video yeah it’s truly sad to see payday in this state I have been a fan of this franchise for over a decade it’s like a relative has died and now we have to hold a funeral truly sad 😔 😢
Had a friend who's just like you, holding out hope long after everybody else had long abandoned the game. The team cutting was the final nail in the coffin to him too - I commend everyone who tried to hold out hope... it's a damn shame this game has gone to hell in a handbasket the way it has... damn you Starbreeze.
How I wish, how I wish you were good We're just two lost clowns heisting in a car game engine Year after year Running the same old heists Have we found The same old game? How I wish you were good
Damn, thumbnail made me think this was a Pink Floyd beta (real) remix. Now I'm just happy I dropped the franchise after PD2 got the Epic games fuckery treatment, and the Denuvo and other pre launch drama for PD3. This is all Starbreeze's ineptitude coalesced.
What hurts me the most is that if you gave a team of modders a good 2-3 months they would have made almost half of all payday 2 maps and added them yo payday 3 for free. Everytime they released something its just been barely anything if not anything interesting at all. The story is also just not interesting, and the dialogue feels like it was written by an intern
I really am bummed it turned out this way. The heist genre has so much potential but all we have to show for it in the 2020s are this and crimeboss. I'm very optimistic towards den of wolves but I need to see more to decide. I still have payday 3 on my wishlist, and even though I have more than enough to buy it, I think I'm better off looking from a distance. At least for another year.
I was one of those stupid people that thought Payday 3 was going to be the biggest Payday ever and even pre-ordered it. Holy shit was I let down. Ever since the day I dropped it, I never played it since. It's a shame too. Payday 2 was awesome and I loved goofing around with friends and randos. And now new adventures await, buddy.
I completely understand man, coming from someone who was of course super excited and hyped to try it out after preorder, and was only met with my console early access cut by a couple days (because Sony somehow gave us the beta build). i enjoy the game and still even play it today but things need to change, it just hurts my heart and soul after hearing about the pubg and revenue lessoning bullcrap, i have small hopes but i just hope that things get better for this year, i really do.
the Payday 3 Collector's Club Discord is full of us folks who are truly hoping for this game to get good. While only so many people are really "active", it's still nice to have a community of collectors officially supported by SBZ. I say "Supported" in the way that sometimes Haua or Liz will pop their heads in. We get the same information as anyone else, at the same time. The Collector's Edition is nice, though. Super cool mask!
W video. I'd been trying to keep up faith in the devs but it's not easy when they've given so little to play. Even at its absolute worst, Payday 2 still got a new heist at least every 4 months or so for most of its lifespan, and even when it slowed down we still got weapon packs in between. There was still something new. PD2 got more content in the *last* year of its active development than PD3 has in its first year and a half. I've got well over 1000 hours in PD2. Probably closer to 1500 across all platforms. I've been a fan of the franchise for what? 10 years? Even at its worst, Payday 2 still had content and its was clear that the devs cared about the game. Payday 3 has just had none of that. It's tragic and baffling. PD3 has just been a hollow bag of nothing and it really makes me wonder how much of the remaining management were involved and are still involved in that whole insider trading thing. Starbreeze hasn't felt like a legit company for a while now. It feels like a shell company that scammed the OVERKILL devs into working for them, and now they're doing the bare minimum to put out "something" so they can use the brand-recognition and pawn it off on fans.
I just moved to Crime Boss Rockay City at this point. Ingame have been doing a fantastic job with it with a combo of free and paid DLCs that have been great. They even recently released a free heist where you steal a nuclear missile from the Soviets going full on Goldeneye. Payday 3 is Payday in name and name alone. Crime Boss at this point has Payday's soul, and does new things with the premise too. STEALTH IS ACTUALLY FUN TO DO IN CRIME BOSS!

Luigi's in custody but i knew Mario got us
Welp it was good. See you in Den of Wolves, lads.
Thank you Mario, the truth hurts on this one.
Nuclear throne music is a crazy nostalgia pull, thank you
I don’t care anymore
By Phil Collins
Thank you for making this video yeah it’s truly sad to see payday in this state I have been a fan of this franchise for over a decade it’s like a relative has died and now we have to hold a funeral truly sad 😔 😢
Had a friend who's just like you, holding out hope long after everybody else had long abandoned the game. The team cutting was the final nail in the coffin to him too - I commend everyone who tried to hold out hope... it's a damn shame this game has gone to hell in a handbasket the way it has... damn you Starbreeze.
Well...
New adventures await buddy!
Been a payday fan since 2013. It hurts so much man. It hurts
At this point i can only hope for den of wolves
How in the world the studio that legit only exists because of payday would then not care about there newest one it's crazy
How I wish, how I wish you were good
We're just two lost clowns heisting in a car game engine
Year after year
Running the same old heists
Have we found
The same old game?
How I wish you were good
Damn, thumbnail made me think this was a Pink Floyd beta (real) remix. Now I'm just happy I dropped the franchise after PD2 got the Epic games fuckery treatment, and the Denuvo and other pre launch drama for PD3. This is all Starbreeze's ineptitude coalesced.
this is so sad, alexa play razor mind
We're all upset, buddy.
Don't think you're alone.
Still begging for the full circus mind mix
look up fnaf mimic jackies box theme song by xtratuna... youre welcome
The roblox version will stand up while payday 3 gets backshots 💀
At least 10 Chambers which is made of og Payday devs and Ulf is going to release some sort of cyberpunk payday
this is the first time i hear my beloved psa man speak i was shocked at how good the video is
I was one of those stupid people that thought Payday 3 was going to be the biggest Payday ever and even pre-ordered it. Holy shit was I let down. Ever since the day I dropped it, I never played it since. It's a shame too. Payday 2 was awesome and I loved goofing around with friends and randos.
And now new adventures await, buddy.
10 years in the joint jumpscare
Them gutting further support disgusted me so much that I can't even bring myself to go back and play Payday 2. It infuriated me that much.
The disappearance of Spanish Shit's payday content has been detrimental to payday
1:37 Hah, I love the Sonic CD 510 beta reference here.
The programmer has a nap
Player should be the Payday clown stealing vault, not Starbreeze stealing our wallet.
stellar choice to use the soundtrack for a sewer level while talking about starbreeze
You forgot to mention the World of Horror music in the description. Also based music choice in WOH, criminally underrated game.
I respect you for using that NUCLEAR THRONE OST HELL YEAH
"If they can't make Payday work, what can they do?" So harsh, so true
the Payday 3 Collector's Club Discord is full of us folks who are truly hoping for this game to get good.
Thanks for reminding me i still had this game in my library
10 Chambers, save us from Starbreeze
A quarter of the people that watched this liked it.
Including me. 👍
Gag at 6:42 made me shit myself laughing, thanks.
Haven't been following Payday news for a bit. Physically gagged at seeing "Starbreeze partners Krafton to expand Payday into PUBG"
I'm more surprised from such a constructive feedback video of yours than you resigning from the program.
OVK's TWD died for this.
OVK's TWD died during the valhalla engine fiasco, that is some insane mismanagements .
nuclear throne music is really fitting
Nah when you stop expecting anything and carry on it can't let you down anymore
It was over the moment payday2 went the dlc route
I just moved to Crime Boss Rockay City at this point. Ingame have been doing a fantastic job with it with a combo of free and paid DLCs that have been great. They even recently released a free heist where you steal a nuclear missile from the Soviets going full on Goldeneye.
Payday 3 is Payday in name and name alone. Crime Boss at this point has Payday's soul, and does new things with the premise too. STEALTH IS ACTUALLY FUN TO DO IN CRIME BOSS!
music choice goes nuclear here
i feel your pain brother
