  • This short view shows live operating using a Elecraft K4 (K4D with the sub receiver in use). Max, NG7M working 3DA0RU (Eswatini/Swaziland) from Utah 0125Z Oct 14th 2021.
This video also give you an idea of how the audio sounds on an Elecraft K4 / CW using the narrow filters. K4 VFO A Audio will only be on the left channel when I turn it on during the demo.

Max I'm on the edge on whether to upgrade to the Flex or K4. I've been using my K3 for 10 years now and it's been great but there's been a lot of upgrades since then. I skipped the K3S but do have a second receiver in my K3. Did you consider the Flex? Also, any feedback on using the K4 remote?? Thanks, Rick NJ5W

Hi Rick, I did consider the Flex option, but owning a K3 and K3S I decided to jump on board with the K4. One thing I'm still waiting on is what Elecraft is calling the VK4 as in virtual K4. I hear the software is close now, but it's been a long wait. We do have other options, for example Win4K4Suite works well for remote, including the spectrum over the internet. However, the remote option from Elecraft and the superhet module have yet to have been delivered which is very disappointing considering how long the K4 has been shipping now.
I don't think you can go wrong with Flex either. Flex had a lot of growing pains early on, that is no secret but I think they have things working pretty well from what I hear. Once thing that alway bothered me with Flex was the fact that they use a mechanical tx/rx relay. Not a big deal for some and I'm sure it's pretty quiet. But the pin diode switching in the K3 and K4 line sure is nice. The other thing for Flex was the charge for software updates. But as far as the flashy factor on the computer spectrum viewing side of it, Flex is pretty appealing.
I think with any rig, there will be some give and take. I wish I had some operating experience with the Flex 6400 for example. I think all the major manufacturer rigs are very good, but in most all cases, there is always something that needs improvement.
A long answer, but keep in mind, some of the claimed features on the K4 have been a lot of time coming. It's a very nice rig, and thanks to the primarily software implementation, software will fix some of the outstanding issues without hardware changes. Elecraft still is working through issues with QSK and keying artifacts. This has been a real pain point for me, but they are making progress.

@@ng7m-ham-shack It's a hard decision. I've had the K3 for 10 years now and it's still works like a champ. No complaints and I wonder if I shouldn't just stick with it. I had a Flex 3000 back when they first came out and the software was terrible. They have come a long way now however. I'm watching a couple of sales so we will see which works best. It's only a hobby, that's what I keep telling myself. Great video's keep them up.

Max, I am super keen to see a YT demo of the K4 DNR (Noise Reduction - NOT Noise Blanker) in action. Could you please oblige? Thanks, John 2E0SVB

Can you accomplish this with the K4 or do you need the D and two receivers. I can get something like this running split on my TS890. - i like to save 1000 and just get a K4 but can’t completely understand what I’m giving up - no interest in diversity receive.

You do not need the K4D to work split obviously. If you are not interested in diversity receive or listening on another band at the same time as the main receiver being on a different band, then you don't need the K4D's second receiver. The K4D simply has two analog to digital converters rather than a single one and thus has the ability to listen across two antenna sources / bands at the same time. So yeah... if you don't need it or would ever use that second AD, then don't spend the $$$. This is already well documented by Elecraft as to what you get with the second AD. Watch the videos on the Elecraft channel for more details etc...

I would love to see this compared to a FLEX radio. I am considering purchasing FLEX or Elecraft K4 for xmas.

That blows my flex out of the water. All down the filter range. But how does it hold up against the k3s? Cw only

Hi Jay, it holds up really well. I love it on CW... the narrow filters with zero ringing. The K3/S of course is great, but it's not even in the same ballpark on the narrow filters. However, they still have some work to do. Next software release will have narrower skits on the filters, and I'll like that. And I'm really looking forward to the superhet module too. Overall, it's a keeper so far. I also love the pin diode switching like the K3/S too of course... silent CW keying from the rig anyway. Elecraft seems to do a pretty good job on the updates based on the history of the K3, so any irritations will get sorted out sooner than later. Knock on wood! But right now the thing I would miss the most going back to my K3 or K3S would be the sound of the narrow filters. Oh, they need to get Bin spectrum data and I/Q spectrum data pumped out on the ethernet connection sooner than later. That's a sore spot as of the time of this post. :( Max NG7M

Wowzers! So RX/TX are clearly visible when working split? I haven't seen that before on any other rig - amazing! I am 100% SSB, but can see that'd be super useful. Thanks again for the upload, and subbed! 73, John 2E0SVB
