    I strongly believe Elvis would still be alive today had it not been for the Colonel's personal greed. The 1973 Hawaii special was Elvis's last great triumph, a challenge he exceeded. For the next 5 years, it was back to the same cities... the same stages...the same crowds. Elvis died of terminal apathy...he simply did not care any more.

    The Colonel held Elvis back from becoming even bigger, going on world tours and doing more interviews. Colonel Tom Parker pushed Elvis to the very edge, pressuring him to do more and more shows, to keep throwing him up on stage no matter how bad his health was. Some people say Elvis died of Drugs, But what really killed him was Colonel Tom Parker!

      I read a comment out there ,if it wasn't for Colonel Parker Elvis would not have been what he was without C Parker. And he would still be alive. something like that. Wow to the person that wrote that , you have your opinion and you're entitled to it. Colonel Parker was a fake the entire time. And Elvis did not know it. If he could have toured around the world , alone that would have made himv happy and he would still been alive just from that. But the dumbass colonel Parker couldn't go out of the states. Therefore he should have been fired.
      Elvis then should had fired that fat sob,and God ...y another manager. Because there were a lot of great managers in the seventies. Elvis already
      Was famous through the 50s and 60s. When he made his 68 come back. He arranged at himself along with someone else I can't remember the name. Colonel Parker wanted a Christmas show. Come on a Christmas show on your first appearance in 10 years. I laughed. Elvis did the right thing , Elvis 68 special comeback ,and he killed it. Right there and then he should have took on a new manager. Elvis would have still been alive fans would have been screaming etc.

Despite everything Elvis could do to waste money, e.g., give away jewelry that cost more than he made from a show, buying everybody a jet ... when he was close to broke ... Elvis never had a year when he didn't make money. More correctly, Parker made him work enough to make a profit. re: movies, Elvis was offered the role Glen Campbell took in TRUE GRIT. Elvis insisted on billing above John Wayne, other things that were impossible. He didn't dare get away from the formula that always worked. He could have fired Parker at an second, they had no written contract. Vernon recognized the truth, Parker was the man who created Elvis.

    There is a story about the colonel that goes like this. When he was a young man in Holland, where he hailed from, he was known as a bit of a flashy dresser as he used to get about town wearing a yellow raincoat, a bit of a trademark look. There was a young woman he was seeing who was last seen alive with a man that resembled the colonel and he was wearing a yellow raincoat. The Police went on a search for the Man in the yellow rain coat but didn't find him. . .On the same night this woman that was apparently murdered, the colonel went missing. He left his home in Holland, without telling friends or family, and somehow he made it to the USA, where he wound up working as a Carney. His friends and family never heard from him again till one night his sister saw him on TV. The story goes that the real reason the Colonel never left the USA or applied for citizenship or would never let Elvis travel, except for the stint in the army, was because he feared that Interpol would intercept him and interrogate him as to why he left Holland in such a hurry...I found this story on the internet when I was writing a paper on Elvis Presley, if you search Colonel Tom Parker Its out there somewhere on the web.

    • @claxtonclawhammer9969
      @claxtonclawhammer9969 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, Marvin, I have been considering this logically and unemotionally over the past few days after seeing the new Elvis Presley movie. How many of us in the general public know the details of the business relationship that Elvis shared with Parker for so many years? Was Elvis so weak and timid that he allowed himself to be abused and used for years on end? He had no cojones to stand up for himself? I don't think so. That does not speak well of Elvis. Not any sort of "King."
      Let's suppose two men decide to start a business partnership to create a new business together. Like Hewlett and Packard. It is by nature a 50/50 partnership, where they share equally the expenses and rewards. They are equal partners in the arrangement. Not the typical agent/client relationship.
      The typical run of theatrical agents may charge only 10 or 15 percent of the celebrity's income as a fee for certain services like booking shows, doing publicity, arranging for travel, negotiating with producers, etc. But then they usually have an agency with a number of other clients.
      So the artist or talent may only pay ten or fifteen percent of his income, but he then he may only get ten to fifteen percent of the agent's time and attention, if that. Brian Epstein charged the Beatles 25 percent, but he represented a roster of other artists also from whom he collected money. The Beatles did not get his full time and attention. But even so, when he died, they did not last long managing themselves as a group did they? The band broke up soon after. So would the Beatles have broke as big as they did without Brian Epstein's unique knowledge and talents? Hard to say.
      So I think the Colonel Parker/Elvis Presley relationship was a unique and rare one in the entertainment world. Certainly not typical. I think when they formed their partnership they decided to go big and shoot for the moon, to make Presley the biggest thing in show business, a superstar, not a minor celebrity. Which they succeeded at, maybe way above their wildest dreams. But to achieve that they both agreed to give the project their full time and attention, to pull out all the stops and go for broke. Elvis Presley got Parker's full time and attention as his agent.
      But 50 percent of nothing is nothing. If Elvis had flopped, Parker would have been destitute probably, at least for a while.
      Anyway, that is the thoughts I have had about it. I have decided not to join the Col. Parker lynch mob. But I lived in Memphis for a number of years back in the 60's. I did not know Presley or Parker or have any connections with them. But I know the city and am interested in Memphis music, etc. Which is why I write all this, I suppose.

He was wanted by Dutch authorities for suspicion of murder. He worked hard to lose his Dutch accent, and avoided most interviews for that very reason. But the guy could not act his way out of a wet paper bag. He was horrible, even in those God-awful cookie cutter movies that were created around him. And again, not to take away from Elvis, but good management makes all the difference in the music world. Elvis was playing holes before Parker got a hold on him, and Parker pulled him out. Yes, Parker was a sleazebag, but you gotta give the devil his due. He did a heck of a job with Elvis. I cannot believe that this man, obviously so close to death, could still be spouting such a pack of lies. He robbed from Elvis, kept him from being the great artist he could have been and manipulated him into an early grave. NO ONE is more responsible for the wasted talent of Elvis Presley through most of the 60's (the comeback special and 1969 being the exceptions) and all of that touring in the 1970's. Elvis wanted to tour more? That's a laugh. If he ever said that to Parker it was because he had allowed himself to become a puppet to Parker's puppeteering and was being made to say and probably believe it. If only the people around Elvis had the balls to tell him that, he may be still around today.

    • @joecomer8275

      Yes, Dolly's and Whitney Houston's later version were by far the best versions of that song. Dolly is a smart lady who had already had a huge country hit with that song. I don't think she would have bowed to the Colonel's demands for anything.

    • @joecomer8275
      @joecomer8275 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are quite right except for one thing. I believe that Presley would NOT have had a number one HOT 100 hit with "I Will Always Love You". That would not have happened. It was a song so strongly identified with Dolly at that time, he would not have gotten away with it. He may have been able to have recorded so many other artists songs and have had many people fall all over him for doing so but not this one. Elvis' "Burning Love" was his last No. 1 and that was largely because it was a return of the Elvis of old that mainly recorded songs that were written for him and no one else. "I Will Always Love You" hardly qualified as that.

    parker only cared about parker and gambling debts. at time just before death he screwed elvis over contract with RCA and when all was said and done Elvis ended up with about 10 % after parker and RCA got done with the contract. also parker on the day of death had Vernon sign a royalty contract for 85% to go to him and 15 % went to estate. if that is not a screwing what is and RCA was as bad as parker because they were in cahoots with parker all the way for years and if elvis ever got what he had coming to him then he never would of worried about money like he did. Elvis dad Vernon was the patsy for parker because he was so tight and ignorant to hillbilly ways that parker got to him so he would make Elvis sign these contracts with parker.

    Sometime back in the 70's, around the time Elvis was extremely bored and in need of new challenges, Japan offered millions of dollars for Elvis to perform there. Instead of jumping at the chance, Parker turned it down cold, possibly because of his illigal alien status. Who knows, maybe if a Japan tour had worked out, that might have helped Elvis' career. All Elvis did was tour the United States. That must have gotten old after a while.

    My commentary is based on some publicity/promotion experience: In the beginning, Parker was ideal for Elvis. Innovative, shrewd, creative & relentless. Brian Epstein consulted Parker before bringing The Beatles to America to understand the security required. The old man was sharp. His deals for E in those early days were deals no artist was getting. A million dollars for an hour concert? In those days that was unheard of. The Hawaiian Concert was beamed by satellite worldwide to over a billion people & that was in the early 70's. No artist played to a billion people or even commanded that attention. BUT...the Colonel was selfish. Elvis was kept from big pay days & an even developing a bigger reputation. He was not exposed to the best songwriters. He was offered parts in True Grit (by John Wayne himself), Midnight Cowboy, A Star is Born (from Barbra Streisand herself). He was approached by artists like Frank Zappa, John Lennon & Paul McCartney to play and/or record with them. Nothing. He didn't even join his close friends on record late in his career: Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins. He supposedly was approached by Bobby Darin to sing with him in concert. In the early 70's a management conglomerate out of Chicago made offers to buy Elvis' contract & bring him to Atlantic Records. Nothing. Of course, we all know now why Elvis never performed in Europe/Australia. The Colonel was an illegal alien (oops...undocumented person) Offers to perform overseas -- all turned down. The only time Elvis stood up was during the '68 Comeback Special. The Colonel wanted all Christmas songs. Instead, producer Steve Binder helped fortify the argument that Elvis needed to perform before a live audience. The what-if's are too numerous to mention. In the later years -- 1967-8 -- the Colonel should have been showed the exit. But no one had the experience or the balls. Elvis should have had more allies in Hollywood / Nashville by the musicians / actors who were determined to GET him into their projects. It would have been all different. Elvis would have had a viable challenge again & his fame would have gone to another level. He probably would have recorded an all blues album with the finest black blues artists in the business.
    Not all the blame should be on Colonel Parker -- but, the blame does begin with him. Greed. Elvis was stifled -- live concerts became the same creative prison as his late stale formula movies. (which he himself called travelogues). He should have listened to more Leonard Cohen, John Prine, Tom Waits & Dylan. He should have avoided songs that charted for other artists. It seems he started to: I was flabbergasted when he did James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues" in the Hawaiian Concert. One of the best songs he ever did.

    • @keithglimmer4505
      @keithglimmer4505 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very doubtful that Aloha from Hawaii was seen by a billion people. That number was given by the con man Parker 4 months before the concert & everybody just keeps quoting the figure. It was available to a billion people so if every TV set was tuned to Aloha in every country where it was beamed (40 nations, I think) then 1 billion people tuned in. Not to take anything away from the event, it was a spectacular achievement & EP was probably the only single artist that could have done it.

    • @lastrada52
      @lastrada52 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Keith Glimmer - Sorry for the long response, but you may find some of my commentary interesting at best: Your info was gleamed probably from published unsubstantiated tales from an Alan Hanson piece or Susan Doll book on the myths of Elvis. But, Elvis' own Marty Lacker addressed it diplomatically: "The day after the show we were sitting in the suite in the Hilton Hawaiian Village when the Colonel arrived with a Japanese newspaper that stated that 98% of the Japanese households that had TV watched the show. When Lagenestra (President of RCA) and the Colonel said,"Worldwide" they used that term to denote that it would be viewed in countries in the world other than the U.S., certainly there were places it wasn't seen, nothing has ever been shown in every single part of the world. As for the "First" in regards to an entertainment show via Satellite,it was in many ways and it was also the first show done on RCA/NBC's satellite. To try to minimize Elvis' historic outstanding performance 33 years later by someone who might not have even been born then or if he was might have not been aware enough to witness the true worldwide impact..."
      Suffice it to say, it was the largest audience in history by any artist especially for its time." - Marty Lacker
      Now Wikipedia (can we rely on that source? I doubt it) is inserting a fact that the "Guinness Book of World Records" reports that Michael Jackson's Super Bowl XXVII Halftime holds the record for the largest TV audience for a performance with 133.4 million viewers. Really?
      A captive Super Bowl FOOTBALL audience? Are we forgetting that the majority of the viewers -- 133.4 million -- were actually tuned into what? The Super Bowl? And that figure for 1993 is pretty paltry. These viewers didn't tune in exclusively to watch a Michael Jackson concert. Now, MJ did attract large audience in his day -- but to say that audience was HIS is quite inaccurate. Football fans tuning in at home don't turn their sets off because the Half Time show is on. When the "world" tuned into Elvis' Aloha from Hawaii there was no Super Bowl bonus audience tuned in. Those numbers tuned in to watch Elvis and Elvis alone despite the technology & in 1993 it was even being better than 1977. Many more families had televisions, as well as, bars and restaurants not to mention Pay Per View and reruns on HBO. As usual these bloggers/writers never compare apples to apples. It's let's try and de-mystify Elvis as much as possible. These are people who have no clue what the music business was like before Elvis in the 1950's because after Elvis it became an industry. No one asked Elvis to do a half-time show for the Super Bowl....because he wouldn't have done it, and he alone would have been too expensive even for them. Entertainers today need to do a venue like the Super Bowl to get that audience they probably wouldn't get otherwise. Look how many of your "super stars" today are failing, concerts cancelled, half-filled, poor shows. Two weeks ago the biggest act to take the stage in England at that big Glastonbury fest was Dolly Parton. Sends a message doesn't it? These bloggers/writers would probably answer me by saying "yes, the majority went to see her for her tits." But they'd be wrong.
      I do respect how you wrote your comment Keith -- it was civil and respectable. But the source of your information -- those two writers I mentioned who stated that Aloha figures were questionable -- are just not reliable sources. They substantiated nothing. Even if the figures were inaccurate, they would still be figures far larger than anything for a single entertainer. It was broadcast via satellite -- fact -- worldwide -- that's a fact -- they didn't do that for just anyone in 1977. In the real world, we know what Elvis achieved, how much he sold, how long his legacy has lasted and how much it influenced others. That's not myth. And that concert, if you see it today, was spectacular. I would've have liked to have seen him move it more, shake it more. But, he didn't want to offend any countries so he kept it low key. Even low key -- Elvis delivered. He didn't need smoke machines, laser beams, two hundred sexy half-naked female dancers behind him, or muscular back-up male dancers supporting him and huge helium balloons flying over the audience. He needed none of it. I don't see that today, except for maybe a Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. Because they too....their concerts are about them, We go to see them. Not the extravaganza or needing a Super Bowl audience.
      Time for a beer......

      Forget '67 , Parker should've been dismissed already 1965 when the film scripts turned more and more bad.

      John LaStrada one simple fact most people miss.
      Elvis worshipped the ground Parker walked on, he was the single most important person in his life beyond his family.
      He wasn't in any legally binding contract with Parker as non of thier contracts were legal as Parker was not even supposed to be living in America.
      Elvis knew this and tried everything in his power to stop him from being deported

      Interesting how so many USA men spend so much time online whining on about women. Like those ones who make groups claiming they don't want women, but instead of leaving women alone to have hero gentlemen types, they spend their time trying to make women feel bad, and trying to get other men to have horrible personalities like them.
      Priscilla was his partner from young, and he controlled her life. He would have wanted to her to be well looked after

    By the grace of God I have been clean/sober for a few 24 hours now.
    I can completely empathize and in some instances sympathize with Elvis.
    I must say, isn't it nice to be able to blame the colonel for everything else that's got wrong??? If you're not?
    I KNOW The colonel was a GREEDY BASTARD.
    For those of you like myself that loved Elvis we have to admit it's not the colonel's complete fault that Elvis left this world way too soon.

    Okay, so I personally hate the Colonel as much as most of you do, but honestly, I can't blame him 100% for Elvis' death because Elvis had the ability, power, and the right to fire the Colonel, but he never could do it. Elvis chose to sit back and let the Colonel walk all over him. That I think was part of his demise. Not only not being able to stand up to the Colonel, but to most people in his life. But I really do HATE the Colonel. He worked Elvis WAYYY too much and he took (STOLE) too much of his earnings. I really wish Elvis fired him. He would have probably lived longer if he had.. :( RIP Elvis, I love you!

      +MJJLOVE93 LOVE What I don't get, is why Elvis was paying off Parkers debts? That should be Parkers problem not Elvises. Parker was making half of what Elvis brought in. Parker could have paid off his own debts. If he gambled more then that, I would tell him, that is your problem, not mine. Parker did help Elvis in the beginning, but at the end of it, Elvis should have fired parker and got a new promoter and manager. But being the guy Elvis was, he felt an obligation to parker for what he did for elvises career. Elvis was loyal to the end. Where ever Elivis is , my thanks, my love and the best to you, you earned it. peace.

      @@frankstein5373 and it sucks so bad cause he fired him once and the colonel had the audacity to write up a whole list of what Elvis owed him starting from the gas that was spent for the performance in the Louisiana hayride. It ended up being a total of 2 million that he wanted from elvis And elvis had spent so much and was only getting half of the money that was being made. It’s so sad bruh. I’ve been a huge fan since I can remember because if my mom. And I’ve always hated this man so much for what he did to elvis. He was such a smooth talker and manipulative man. He was a very smart conman. And about the loyalty side of elvis he felt as if he was was obligated to still having him there. And it just makes me so angry that he was supposed to be helping him but he was just using him. There was so much life and talent left in this man. It’s just terrible.

    I wish Tom Hanks would have watched this so he didn't have to do the bizarre foreign accent while playing Colonel Tom Parker in the upcoming Elvis movie starring Austin Butler. I hear the movie is GREAT despite the off putting accent. At least to Elvis fans who knew the Colonel was born in the Netherlands and came to the US illegally at 20, but did NOT speak with an accent when he first met Elvis in 1955. I have NO idea why Tom came up with the accent. He even dodged the question at the Cannes Film Festival.

      I've seen the film, and agree, Hanks accent is terrible and make him sound like a weird James Bond villain but I think they were going for that because they really wanted to make him out to be the bad guy.

      Yea...Tom may put his own creativity in. We dont want to see just a copy cat without any artistic originality or creativity. Otherwise, its documentary film. You can just watch utuve, real Colonel. This guy is so crook n manipulative. Elvis can be a hard headed like drug addict then why he didnt depart from this crook? Elvis didnt mind fire his 16 yrs friends, Red n Sunny. He should fire this crooney a long ago...Your thoughts?

    So sad if you watch Vernon Presley’s comments after Elvis in concert, Vernon talks how trustworthy Parker was and they never had to worry about him. Yet Parker was taking an unheard of 50% that upset Elvis very much

    • @Mexicanita1904
      @Mexicanita1904 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vernon loved his son but I’m sorry he was a fool who prior to Elvis hitting a big could barely support his own family. He was not business savvy at all. Vernon’s little prison stint when Elvis was a child kind of shows he did not make good decisions in life. Elvis was the breadwinner of that family and he not only supported his parents, his entire extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) and he supported the entire Memphis mafia and their families too! Elvis carried a huge financial responsibility for years. It’s no wonder he took drugs to escape from so much stress. Colonel Parker worked him to the ground, saw Elvis as a cash cow and a profited off him.
