- In April of 2013, steam returned to North Carolina's famous Southern Loops with a series of four 21st Century Steam excursions headed by ex-Southern 2-8-0 #630. These were the final trips of 630's spring 2013 tour and were the first time steam had traversed the line between Asheville and Old Fort since #611's final run in 1994. Smoky Mountain Rail videos attended the event and chased two of the excursions. So sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of 630 thundering through the Western North Carolina mountains.
6:23 12:21 SOU #630's Ex-CofG 6 chime whistles blowing some good sounds, & the bell is dinging back n' forth.
12:06 Isn't that near the Andrew Geyser In Andrews, NC?
Nope, this one is a long way away near Old Fort, NC
the #630 has returned to asheville once more :) I wish it would visit the great smoky mountains railroad where it used to work on when it was known as the murphy branch
Nothing is certain yet but the VMT is studying the possibility of having 611 restored. We can only hope, but it would be amazing.
I heard of a rumor in a classic trains magazine that N&W 611 Is Probably going to come back in service, That would be great, woud'nt it?
This was a special event, one weekend only
Would love to see a OHCR 1551/SOU 630 doubleheader excursion in the future!
