I think Vietnamese should protect the country's financial sovereignty and prevent wealth from being robbed by dollars. The intelligence of Vietnamese is much higher than that of Indians, and they are more industrious. When China develops high technology and competes for high-profit industries, Vietnam accepts some industrial transfers from China, which is a very good cooperation. Vietnam and China are countries with similar cultures, I think China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam all have the same culture in essence, but our scales are different, so no one can replace anyone.

I was born in Vietnam, though I am a citizen of the USA. It depends upon what you mean by that slippery term 'Next China.' Will it be a threat and major economic player on the world stage? No. It's too tiny. And that would be expecting a flyweight to duke it out among heavyweight contenders. But its position has been secured by being a niche player in manufacturing. And it will continue to move in that direction. I'm just glad that Vietnam did not put all its prospects into tourism, like neighboring Thailand. And it's really trying to power forward in the direction of countries like Korea or Singapore.

It relies on all semi knocked down parts sent from China to Vietnam, gets assembled and ships with Made in Vietnam sticker. Making show and Tshirts are good but can’t make economy so sound. Vietnamese are smart and hardworking. I believe Vietnam will soon become an upper middle income country. But it is still difficult to become a developed country. Because Vietnam's recent rapid development is due to the transfer of mid-to-low-end industries from China. It is impossible to become a high-income country by relying on middle and low-end industries. If you want to become a high-income country, you must have high-tech industries, and no country will transfer high-tech industries to Vietnam. It is difficult for Vietnam to compete with Europe, America, China, Japan and South Korea in high technology with its own efforts. The current rapid development does not mean the permanent rapid development. This is the middle-income trap encountered by many countries.

Nah, Vietnam doesn't need to be "China" in term of economy. It needs to be second to China who will likely become number one soon. Historically, Imperial Vietnam has been around second or third economically during the ancient times to medieval periods because it was extremely rich due to trade with Imperial China. In the list of tributary states, Imperial Vietnam was number one to China, and Chinese emperors were persuaded by Chinese mandarins that China had been suffering huge trade deficits with Imperial Vietnam. It is ironic if you compare the history and current time.

    No, not even close.
    1) They are 2 entirely different sizes, China has the huge domestic market and supply chain to be self reliant, Vietnam can only hope to be a small cog in the global supply chain.
This mean they will be at the mercy of multinationals, who will always siphon profits away from the country, and just exploit it for the cheap labor.
    2) Vietnam since it's founding has been at war constantly, peace was only achieved in 1991 when China and Vietnam stopped the border wars.
This means Soviet help during the cold war were in military supplies. Vietnam never received any Soviet heavy industry.
Which means Vietnam's growth is VASTLY different from China's growth in the 1980s, China had a robust heavy industry, the heavy industry is the foundation of an economy, without it, an economy relying on textile industry and electronics assembly cannot grow beyond middle income country status.

The thing that the Filipinos, my countrymen, can learn from Vietnamese will be to have a strong sense of patriotism, nationalism, and unity. Their GDP has surpassed the Philippines today. Vietnam may be the next Korea or Taiwan in the future if things go smoothly as planned. Although the country is a new player in the field of electronics and manufacturing, once the Vietnamese children become competent and competitive people in the future then it will only take years for them to study the technology of neighboring countries and apply those learnings through a hybridization process. Since it has the same cultural genes as China, I think I will go to Vietnam to play when the epidemic is over.Vietnam's economic development is good for China, because it is right next to China, so it can easily import parts and raw materials from China to assemble products for export. Just like China doesn't care that South Korea and Japan are getting more and more developed, both East Asian countries, the more developed they are, the more helpful China's economy will be. This is determined by geography. Look at the South Asian countries. If one of the South Asian countries rises, the economy will certainly lead to the rise of the other South Asian countries.Of course, some industries in each country will compete with each other, but healthy competition can promote the economic prosperity of the entire region.

Vietnam is definitely on the up and up, but realistically it's more like "the next Korea" than the next China. China is a massive entity that no country (not even India) can compete with re its industry, labour force, infrastructure, and centralization.
Even then, Vietnam hasn't been really "tested." It could very easily fall into the middle income trap.

as a Chinese, i think if you want to discuss will Vietnam become next china.. you need to know what china is. Is China a country that only produces shoes and clothes? nah..China actually has many high-tech companies,Apart from high-end chips that cannot be produced in China, I can't think of anything that cannot be produced in China(And high-end chip technology will be mastered by China sooner or later)
china have huawei xiaomi OPPO vivo 1+ Alibaba baidu tencent dji byd and so many other hi-tech companies.China can produce everything from the space station to high-speed rail and
what Vietnam has? The production of clothes and shoes can easily be transferred to places with lower wages, but high-tech production is not easy to lose. Unless Vietnam has its own high-tech enterprises, I don't think Vietnam will become China, but fall into the middle-income trap

For me, Vietnamese people in my heart think that Indians are quite smart (it can be said that they are as smart as China if they are well educated). Simply now I see that they are limited by customs, culture and the divide between rich and poor and education. Hopefully they will develop well and Vietnam will cooperate more deeply with India to fight China. I never expected China to grow but I do hope India will.

Much of the manufacturing in Vietnam is owned by Chinese companies and cross-border supply chains often obscure where products are actually made (i.e. most of Ford is built in Mexico, but qualifies as a domestic car brand because it's finished in the US). Is Vietnam's economy surging due to manufacturing within its borders: yes. Is China losing because of that: not really. This nuance was missed by Trump who failed to realize that China avoided tariffs by rearranging logistics to disguise the origins of products. He, like many people, failed to adequately understand globalism. Still, as China becomes post-industrial, cheaper, more labor-intense jobs will move outside China, preferably close by. That's why I don't think Vietnam will be the next China because it's like saying Mexico will be the next US; both trade relationships are subservient in nature. What will happen in Vietnam will be what happened in Mexico since NAFTA: in general, the economy/wages will grow, the middle class will blossom, and standards of living will increase.

Vietnam is a replica of China. Aside the figures, let's be more realistic and focus on facts. Please be reminded that facts never lie. Up to these current days, I really do not know why the outsiders are so fascinating about VN economic growth even under the experts' view such as the articles of Bloomberg, Financial Times, Hong Kong Shanghai Bank, IMF, WB. Some dare to name VN as an " economic marvel " of the world. Very astonishing, as I am living in VN passing my youth through the dirty war and, more over, never an instance in my life, I have quitted my mother land even for travel purpose. Thus, as a matter of course, I profoundly know my people, the political and economic system of the past and in this moment in time. Let's consider the actual facts ( Oct, 2022) : a) the whole country is facing shortage of gases, fuel of all kind; b) bank run ( Saigon Commercial Bank ) founded by the being imprisoned top tycoon of VN, madam Truong My Lan, landlord of Van Thing Phat real estate conglomerate; c) as a result, 800 affiliated companies in relation with the said conglomerate have been in the state of being frozen under police orders; d) USD and gold price are skyrocketed at the point of 700 USD much higher than that of the international trading price, e) the stock market is now stagnated, the VN index is down to the lowest point; f) bank interest rate is spectacularly going up, and no more credits issuances; g) continuously, big tycoons and high ranking officials lined up into custody; h) galopant inflation, i) impressing spread of corruption, prevarications, malversations ; g) burst out of real estate bulble; k) shortage of medicaments and medical facilities and so on, . . . Is that the sign of a " star " in South East Asia, as per some occidental media's appraisal ? Even a prestigious media like BBC stated about the coming golden era of VN. Really strange, are they stupid or do they aim at another political target ? Or the propaganda of Vietnam works so well ?
