Bottom line, they're both legends. However, if it weren't for Anita insisting they let Toni do Love Should've Brought You Home, she wouldn't be the Toni Braxton we all know and love. Anita paved the way for her.
I disagree. Toni already had a record deal as lead singer before Anita passed on the Boonerang soundtrack. These are two great talents but it is unfair to compare them because there is nothing similar about them besides having the ability to sing sultry music! They do not even sound similar! Both have beautiful voices but there is an obvious age difference, style difference, and technical difference. One is more traditional soul whereas the other one is more pop. The beautiful thing is there is no song either one could sing without making it uniquely their own due their unique voices and vocal style
Lows- Toni Mid belts- tie Upper belts- Anita Head voice- Toni No one can deny that they both are legendary vocalist and amazing artists, it’s just that Toni is slightly better overall
Both are great. Toni has a better technique, though. She's basically mastered her own voice and has full control. Her lows are incomparable. Even Mariah Carey's lows fall short next to Toni's. Her tone, texture, resonance and accuracy is everything. As she goes up in her range, it kind of gives me a Whitney-esque vibe. Most singers voices thin out as they go up the scale, but hers becomes heavier and more full. It's oddly unique in that sense. Anita's voice is distinct, but her technique is weird. It sounds like she has a mouth full of water in her low to mid ranges and she slurs high notes often instead of hitting them spot on. The ironic part is that it works for her voice. Her clarity in her upper registers sound like gold once she places her voice correctly. I don't think anyone else can sing like Anita, but Anita.
I have always thought that Toni Braxton would be the perfect artist to remake some of Anita Baker's music. One things for sure, they must be sisters some how some way.
Toni Braxton has been my favorite female artist since I was a kid. Anita follows close behind. I’ll be 31 next month. You can’t love Toni w/o Anita Baker! Both living legends. Effortless singing at its best! Never understood why Toni’s never done any of Anita’s tributes. Like TF! Vocal range is similar.
Toni has a bigger range than Anita, and for a contralto, that is pretty durn impressive. Tone and approach (that's arguable...both are amazing). I think Toni has gotten vocally lazy over the years imo (live speaking). She can still sing, but in her prime she used to attack the stage. Anita still brings it.

Absolutely Anita wins!Toni is not all that bad in her own right, but anita is a legend!!!Anita sings circles around toni, especially when she sings jazz!!!
I disagree Anita can match Toni note for note, with the differences being Anita can belt when using her lower or higher register. Toni when singing the bottom notes has a tendency to sound breathy, almost like a whisper, Anita's lower range is fuller more defined because she has a better control of her instrument. Top notes Anita again vocally is stronger, in her ability to sustain and belt those notes, while Toni voice while does have an impressive range doesn't match up.
Anita Baker is a stylist! I've heard alot of people try to imitate sultry Toni Braxton, whose voice is beautiful, but Ainta Baker is in a class all by herself. No no one in the world sounds like Anita Baker! Her voice takes you to another place in time. Its BEAUTIFUL and mystical at the same time. Anita is more of a lower mezzo (alto) judging by her tone. She doesn't strike me as a Contralto, her lower notes aren't dark enough without a push. Yes, Anita even belted a C#6 ....lol
To me, Toni phrasing and tonality is more like Phyllis Hyman. Being that she is a Mezzo Soprano, Anita's style requires a certain vocal range that Toni as Lyric Contalto just doesn't possess. It's just like when Tommy Motolla tried to convince us that Mariah was the new Whitney...when really she was the new Teena Marie.
Winette86 The issue in these comparisons is not vocal range, it's the weight and dexterity of the fach that makes all the difference. Comparing Toni and Anita is like comparing Mariah to Beyonce.
Their both great singers but come on... you can compare toni with anita. I understand your doing studio vocals but anita will eat toni alive in a live performance and that's What matters to me because anyone can sound good in a studio with the right affects.
I can't choose. I love these women equally and for different reasons... I've been an Anita fan since Songstress I was 6 years old then. I've loved Toni since Love Shoulda Brought You Home. Thanks Anita for turning those songs down or else we wouldn't have Toni.
Great video! Toni took the lower register & belts up to D5, Anita took the rest of the belts & head voice was about a tie. By the way Toni's lowest note is a G#2 (possibly an F#2). Where is her D6?! I'd love to hear it!
I love Toni's D3's, & her voice period. Love both of them vocally. Toni: D3, F#3, G3, C#5, E5 Anita: Eb3, E3, B4, Eb5 , F#5 Tie: F3, Bb4, C5, D5 (because Anita's 2nd & 3rd D5's were AMAZING!), F5 (toni slipped on her last one thou) They both are great in their own respective vocal styles. I like Toni's voice BUT Anita sings with such a feeling that she brings shivers down your spine!!! I love me some Anita, my favorite!!!! Anita is a sexy beast!!!!
I love so much
Anita is more of a lower mezzo (alto) judging by her tone.
Toni isn’t a contralto she’s a mezzo soprano

Their both great singers but come on... you can compare toni with anita. I understand your doing studio vocals but anita will eat toni alive in a live performance and that's What matters to me because anyone can sound good in a studio with the right affects.
Toni is a beast LIVE too ... so i don't know where your going
Not true
Go check Toni’s live performance were she easily reach G5’s
I find it a bit stupid to compare the 2 ladies as they both are great
They both are incredible live but I do feel like Anita would take the cake.
proudtobedark andlovely you’re absolutely right. Anita has been retired for years cane back for a farewell tour and is still killin it like the 80s
Toni can def hold her own
There is no decision for me, it's a tie! They're both Goddess singers!😄 I grew up listening to them both all of my life!
Can someone tell me the name of the song at 0:27 seconds; Toni's D3.
I wanna be (your baby)
I can't choose. I love these women equally and for different reasons... I've been an Anita fan since Songstress I was 6 years old then. I've loved Toni since Love Shoulda Brought You Home. Thanks Anita for turning those songs down or else we wouldn't have Toni.
Anita's voice is at another level .. No shame in being runner-up to Anita though
I LOVE THEM BOTH!!!!!!! THEY SHOULD MAKE AN ALBUM TOGETHER!!!!!!!
Great video! Toni took the lower register & belts up to D5, Anita took the rest of the belts & head voice was about a tie. By the way Toni's lowest note is a G#2 (possibly an F#2). Where is her D6?! I'd love to hear it!
Anita is the Legendary Pioneer and Toni is the legend following in Anita footsteps
I love Toni's D3's, & her voice period. Love both of them vocally.
Toni: D3, F#3, G3, C#5, E5
Anita: Eb3, E3, B4, Eb5 , F#5
Tie: F3, Bb4, C5, D5 (because Anita's 2nd & 3rd D5's were AMAZING!), F5 (toni slipped on her last one thou)
They both are great in their own respective vocal styles. I think they're slightly similar, but not entirely. Love Toni, love Anita.
