You probably know by now, but this was based on a Steve Martin film from the 1990s. I saw the movie, but sadly, not the Broadway play. I didn't even know there had been one until watching your reaction. (And how cool is it that you spotted Leslie Odom Jr. in the background? Great eye!)

Thank you so much for another Raul reaction. As much as you love Raul's voice, I strongly recommend you listen to the Leap of Faith CD. You will be blown away. While the story itself isn't original, the music is unbelievable. And though I didn't get to see this on Broadway, I have seen a bootleg and why this show failed is unfathomable. Raul's name was above the title of the show on the marquee, and the show's failure completely devastated him. He's ready to come back to Broadway, and his fans are clamoring for him. He has been workshopping a new musical called "Galileo," but we've had no word on its status since the COVID recovery started. Anyway, do yourself a BIG favor and listen to the Leap of Faith CD. You won't be sorry you did.

I'm sorry, I no longer have a link to the bootleg. The owner apparently took it private. Sorry I can't help.@@TigerPrawn_

He has 2 different duets with his love interest in the show, "Fox in the henhouse" and "I can read you", and I would love to see you react to either or both. I know I can't ask you to cause I'm not a patron.

Did you read that this was based on the film that Steve Martin was in? In 1992? Raúl was in a play off Broadway round 2019 where he played a chef.

Somewhere there's an alternate universe where LEAP OF FAITH was a huge Broadway hit, and the title role was eventually played by Wayne Brady.

I was just thinking bout this. Haven't seen anyone do any NT2 reactions yet and it makes me sad.

He said that this show in particular was difficult because he had to use so much energy in every performance. He talked about how you have to build up endurance for these kinds of shows, but it was absolutely worth it.

To answer your question yes Leslie had a big part in this.

If any good came out of Leap of Faith being a big flop Warren Leight wanted to work together with Raúl again and wrote a character that he thought would showcase his abilities. He wasn't wrong either, what was only going to be a four episode guest star role turned into a six season regular.

Great to see another Raul fan. I think this is the opening number. He is not revealed to be a conman until later. I did not see it on Broadway but I have the Cast album, I've seen clips of the show and saw a regional production years ago (with, of course, different actors). The songs are great (Raul sings A LOT and he is AMAZING as are the other singers), dancing is spectacular. I think it closed early because the storyline is a little weak. It loosely tracks the Steve Martin movie of the same title (which was great). The story in the musical is kinda sprawling and not as cohesive.

I mean the story is literally the Music Man.

LEAP OF FAITH was indeed a huge flop on Broadway, sadly, only running nineteen performances. It had to close even though it got a surprise nomination for the Best Musical Tony - but even then, its nod for Best Musical was literally its only nomination, and everything else was shut out, even Raul Esparza. But flop musicals rightly become fascinating and beloved for lots of people: in fact, there's a *wonderful* book I recommend called NOT SINCE CARRIE by Ken Mandelbaum that basically goes through the history of flop Broadway musicals from the 50's to the 90's - including the musical adaptation of Stephen King's CARRIE that became one of the most legendary Broadway flops of all time - and it's a terrific read.

I agree it was a weird cut of the song and you didn't really get a sense of the plot, but I think it honestly didn't matter because the show had already been closed at that point. It's a wonder they even got to perform at all.
