Mam, you need to add the hamming weight of previous stages also to the next stage( i.e.path metric), you have rejected some stages you can't until you reached the end to find maximum likelihood path(survivor path).
I took a simple example in this case so that students can understand it better.. To avoid complexity I did that.. If you consider those paths also then also you will get the same result in the case of this example..
