      Also, I’m glad you found a sponsor, but disappointed you chose to partner with that particular one which is as cynical as they come, and that’s not hard to say about wine clubs. Their wine “quiz,” which determines what wines they chose for the customer, is infantile, silly, and doesn’t do your work justice. For example, the “quiz” asks you to chose a “go to drink from Margarita, beer, dry martini, whiskey/scotch or Mimosa. What about those of us who “go to” drinks such as a gin and tonic, daiquiri, or a Negroni, or an Old Fashioned or a rum punch? Did the “brights” running the sponsor’s ad program even watch this video? Which is about gin……
      I have learned a lot from your videos, and I understand that you have to make a living, and that TH-cam is a tough platform to survive on, but unless this partnership pays you “generational wealth,” is it worth undermining your credibility?

    Sweden has seen a gin revolution in the last years, you can now find world class distilleries around every corner. Stockholms Bränneri makes my favorite gin with orange peel and long pepper which is then aged in oak casks, but Hernö, Tevsjö, Skånska Spritfabriken, Spirit of Hven and many others also make excellent gin. It's also fun seeing them incorporate local flavors like sea buckthorn, elderflower, meadowsweet, pine shoots, it really makes the scene incredibly vibrant.

    Tip: if you have long narrated texts, edit some “b-rolls” footage and/or still images over parts of your vids. Although its absolutely no punishment to look at you while you are talking (au contraire), change of imagery makes it more vivid to look at and pay attention till the end.

    Being a bit of a traditionalist I was delighted last week to discover that what used to be one of the biggest-selling brands, Booth's Finest Gin, is being made again and to its traditional recipe, so I ordered a couple of bottles. Marvellous! It is matured in sherry casks, giving it a light straw colour and a mellow taste. Apparently it was the late Queen's favourite. Booth's also used to produce "High and Dry" which was marketed as the driest gin in the world. I wonder if they'll bring it back too.

    I recently discovered a Galician (Northwest Spain) gin called Nordes that is absolutely delicious! I don’t know if you can get it in Australia, but it is super smooth and makes a delicious G&T (the most popular cocktail in Spain).

    There are so many different gins available nowadays - My favorites are Plymouth and No. 3, and as great as they are in a G&T, Martini or Aviation cocktail, I sometimes just pour an ounce or two over ice in a small espresso glass. Cold and slightly diluted, they're very clean-tasting on a hot day (when you realize you're out of tonic water, lemons or limes).

    Discovered Tanqueray and Tonic in 1970. I've been a gin guy ever since. Thanks for this class on my favorite subject.

    My first experience with a gin was neat. I tend to like strong flavors and actually thought it was good, my friends not so much. I have to try some of those more creative gins. Great video!

    There is a Genever festival in Hessalt Belgium that I went to in 2013. I highly recommend it. Also, Beefeater runs a tour of their facility in London that is well worth the trip.

    That was really interesting! I live in Ohio here in the states and we have a couple distilleries who make beautiful gins. One uses hops and juniper with some other things and is a great gin. The other is floral and can be sipped on the rocks or holds up great in simple cocktails! Cheers 🙂

    Cara this is a spectacular review of gin and it's history! I enjoyed this so much. I have tried many gins and I have to say the London Dry Gin is my favourite. But I always like checking out new distilleries especially if local!! Awesome video!! Cheers!! :-)

    Thank you for this. I've been branching out in my gin selection after starting with Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire. One of my favorites of late has been Bloedlemoen from South Africa.
    One thing I'd like to see you touch on is pairing of some of the more modern tonic varieties with the various gins. Finding something to pair with the botanicals in Roku or other craft gins has been a challenge.

    So you inspired me to go pick up a bottle of Old Tom style gin (Ransom here in the US)….wow…what a different flavour profile ….a Martinez and martini with this Ransom gin is something else !!! Lots of cardamom as well as juniper.

    I like juniper forward gins. Beefeater is my favorite in a gin and tonic. Junipero also very good with tonic.

    Super journey into the world of Gin. It's a classic spirit made more exciting know the subtle differences. I give all spirits an airing before pouring. Seems to settle the alcoholic rich aroma.

    Thanks Cara! I'm a huge gin fan and love the history and helpful information you always provide. My current favourite is the 4 Pillars Yuzu gin! Yum! I like to buy local (Australia) products as much as possible, so am so excited with the current boom in the local specialised gin markets at home!!

    Most people think I am crazy with my gin, but for my G&T, I believe the most important thing is quality tonic. I actually use very inexpensive gin (Gordon’s or similar), as long as it is a LD style, for my G&T. I like the flavor profile of the LD and tonic and use 2 parts tonic and 1 part gin and a small wedge of lime in a Collins glass. That said, I am the opposite with my Martini. I have yet to find a better martini gin than Plymouth. I like mine dry and sometimes use St Germaine in place of the vermouth.

    I use Hendrick's for my standard summer G&T. It goes perfectly with hanging out in a hammock after doing a little yard work.

    Very interesting, Cara...There is a boom of new gins everywhere as you said it & here in France too, there's gonna be even the first ever gin only devoted show in October ! They say 200 international references will be presented, but a lot of French gins, so many now I can't keep up (same for French whiskies, btw). For some, London Dry gin remains the model, often with a twist including French botanicals, or also distilled from wine...Other go into more experimental directions, one being perfume from the French historical city of Grasse ("44°N" is the name of the gin), others reworking sloe gin, etc...lots of lots of things, and one I recently discovered & was impressed about is the Christian Drouin (a famous Calvados producer) take on gin, with 4 different versions highlighting also apples or pears (obivously as it is the basis of Calvados, as you know) and while I was sceptical before trying, I have to say it works pretty well...Cheers !

      @@BehindtheBar France is not a typical country for Gin, as you know, and the French juniper spirit (Génépi) is more "'locally" than "nationally" drunk, if I may say. I guess it's the international boom for gin & bartender's role might have been crucial, during all spirits shows, pro meetings, etc to spread the gin word, but also not to forget the craft whisky distilleries boom here (& abroad), who need cash before their whisky gets the 3 years old legal stamp to be released as a whisky, so many of them choose to produce white spirits, gin, rum, vodka, etc...or both of them. I think you'd love those...Indeed I'll be happy to see some French gins in your videos some day...

    Try Barr Hill gin. Made small batches in Vermont USA. They use honey. Love your videos.

      Would love to! Unfortunately a lot of smaller producers don’t export to Australia, we have really high taxes which can make things prohibitively expensive by the time they’re shipped over here. I do like the Warner’s Honeybee gin though!

    If u haven't tried it yet, try Lind and Lime gin, Brockman's Gin and Citadelle gin. First one has the smell of the first kiss and love )) second one is with berries and it is amazing in cocktails, sweet and grassy. The last one is french and is soft, but reaaally has a lot of different herbals with taste and smell

      The pepper note of Lind&Lime is like nothing else. If you dont like pepper you will hate it but I love it for that.

    My friend made me a Roku g&t and it's the reason I drink gin in the first place. I still haven't found a gin I prefer over Roku, but I use Beefeater when I want to switch it up, want something more neutral, or can't get Roku

    I live on the Sunshine Coast Queensland and we have had lots and lots of Gin Distilleries open up here in the last few years. One of them been Steampunk love love love it.     Great educational video, but…
    You said originally Old Tom gin was made with neutral grain spirit as opposed to malt base spirit. That’s actually not true. Neutral spirit (or rectified spirit) was only available since Coffey Stills became widely used in the 1850s. Old Tom style gin was already popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s so way before neutral spirit was possible. And even after the 1850s, if you look at the history of spirit production in England, or gin recipes from that time you can see that 99% of spirits were malt wine based, that’s what they had widely available due to beer production. So Old Tom gin was indeed malt spirit based for the most part.

      That’s a fair point! I meant a more neutral spirit than Genever (in general) and explain that the invention of the Coffey still was important in the development of London Dry but should definitely have not used the term ‘neutral grain’ and been more precise in my explanation!     As always nice content, a gin that tastes like Pina Colada "wow". When I tried Gin (neat) for the first time (a local brand called "Blue Star") I felt I was tasting "shampoo".

      This could be caused by a problem called “Soponification”…
      It’s generally caused by distillers proofing down their spirits with water too rapidly.
      Causing a soapy flavor.
      Some distillers proof down their spirits very gradually… sometimes over days or weeks to avoid this.
      Of course it could also be caused by the type of botanicals and ingredients as well.😊👍🥃

    What, no Plymouth? 😕 It's such a classic and specific gin, definitely one of my faves. I prefer Navy Strength since my cocktails are usually half club soda (Basil Gin Fizz is my #1), and Plymouth I always come back to.

    There's a lovely Canadian gin (Romeo?) based mainly on cucumber & dill. The perfect match for smoked salmon (as is almost any gin...let's be honest).

    I bought a pretty terrible gin from a local distillery (edit: I did not know it was awful before I bought it), and made it palatable by infusing strawberries and lime peel in it.

    Did you know that Jenever was actually invented by the Flemish (Dutch-speaking part of Belgium)? The first written documents date from around 1269 and have a Flemish origin... You're welcome 😉

What about those of us who “go to” drinks such as a gin and tonic, daiquiri, or a Negroni, or an Old Fashioned or a rum punch? Did the “brights” running the sponsors ad program even watch this video? Which is about gin.
    I have learned a lot from your videos, and I understand that you have to make a living, and that TH-cam is a tough platform to survive on, but unless this partnership pays you “generational wealth,” is it worth undermining your credibility?

      Thanks for the feedback Andrew! I actually think the quiz is cute, obviously if you know your drinks you know the tea question is about tannin, the chocolate about barrels etc but it’s also not estranging to any newbies. And they couldn’t exactly have every cocktail on there so I’d just choose the one closest to what you normally drink, or a second favourite! I like that they support smaller and more sustainable wineries, which is really the more important thing, so felt it aligned well with the values of the channel 😊

      Oh, and we put it in the gin video - we haven’t had a chance to film for a while so didn’t have too many options and wanted to put it in a long enough one that it wasn’t too jarring! Hope that makes sense.

I appreciate your putting a shiny spin on the “quiz,” so I looked at it again, and it still seems silly and condescending, even to “newbies.” The company clearly doesn’t care to tax their “experts” (or bots) too much to truly tease out a potential customers’ taste. Even the most “basic” of us enjoys different sweets at different times, we drink coffee in the morning, weak tea at teatime, strong tea when we are cold and herbal tea when we are sick tea, we enjoy all of the different cocktails at appropriate moments/seasons and drink wine on all the occasions offered as answers.
      Yours is a sincere, honest and direct approach to sharing information. This sponsor really seems to be all about making easy choices for themselves, putting their potential customers in superficial “boxes” and, frankly, making lots money by looking at wine newbies as rubes. I still don’t think they are a good fit for you.

    I've entered the chat. I'll drink it neat at times & I know others who have & do. So 100% wrong. We're just in the minority.
    I've had these Gins before:
    Roku (My favorite)
    Drumshanbo (Makes the best G & T)
    Empress 1908 (Color changing)
    Grey Whale (I hate this one neat, tastes like the ocean. Have no idea what cocktail this will be good in.)
    Aviation
    Tanqueray
    Gordon's

      Sure pal, the ‘tends to’ was meant to give a little leeway in that sentence but neat gin drinkers are very much in the minority. I know a lot of people who drink it on the rocks or with a splash of soda though, so always good to try neat AND with a splash of tonic, as I said 😊

    Tanqueray is a classic go to. But for some reason, a lot of Americans love Seagram's and I just ... can't do it 🥲😅

      I don’t know anyone that drinks Seagrams other than wine coolers 30 years ago. You need to meet more Americans.

      I worked as a bartender all through college and could have anything I wanted...I like Seagrams for gimlets, G&T, but there are other choices for more complex mixed drinks. Mostly, I buy vodka and make my own infusions. Indian longpepper is great with herbal cocktails: Indian Paintbrush (rosemary) and with thyme.
