- We're continuing the start of our new mid-size American city in Easthaven County, Massachusetts! This episode is about the initial road layout, one of the most vital things in the development of any city, town, or village - and we take plenty of inspiration from one of America's oldest major cities, one where the road layout can even feel more European than American! We also utilize the amazing road builder mod extensively to create highly creative custom road networks. Hope you enjoy!

I knew you where - So I figured now was the time to publish!
same actually
Your comments made me laugh really hard because it was exactly what I was doing!
@@Infrastructurist😂😂
The more wealthy suburban area you could call "Cigar Hills", named after the topography and the fact that back in the days a lot if the wealthy industry owners of the town, those that could afford cigars, would live up there. Name was originally just something the locals would use, but the name stuck over time, and now thats simply what they call it.
There could even have been a cigar industry in the city in the past, importing tobacco from the Caribbean and manufacturing it in the city before exporting it to Europe.
I live in Boston and love the chaos of our road layout. You can really tell it's full of history. Also another fun fact is all the skyscrapers in Boston are limited in height because of how close Logan airport is to the city.
I can't wait till he fills in the bay to expand the city.
I built Boston in city skylines 2 and it’s at 300k+ population, I want to create a channel so bad to show all the work I’ve done but I keep slacking, ps. I was born and raised in Boston
@@CamayahFilmsdid you at least connect North and South Stations?
@@CamayahFilms That'd be really cool and I'd love to see it! I've been slowly working on a 1:1 recreation of Boston using the image overlay mod but it's very slow going.
One little issue with those one-way parking roads is that normally, in places that drive on the right (vice versa if on the left), you should prefer making people park on the right as well, because of various safety reasons. Essentially the same as if if it was a two way road, and you are most often encouraged to park in alignment with the driving direction, in fact it's often in the law, though seemingly not heavily enforced.
Maybe it's the back-in angled parking? A hybrid of angled density and drive-out parallel.
Also, I think he has the parking facing the opposite direction as the direction of traffic, making it impossible to park.
@@colinmcnamar422 That's the point yeah
I know this is so nitpicky, but given how awesome this series is, and how committed you are to the authenticity of this area - Massachusetts is one of several states known as a "Commonwealth," and any sort of official documentation, letterhead, or even county headers (like the awesome one you've made for Easthaven County) would read "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" instead of "State of--." I live in a Commonwealth state and all of our official documentation says "Commonwealth of--." Keep up the amazing work, I've been loving all of your Cities series!!
Those intro cinematics are amazing.
Thank you!
5:04 the accent strikes again 😭💀😂❤
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
I knew it was the right call to add the duck sound. You guys would wreck me if I let my pronunciation make it through HAHAHAH
I was dying laughing😂
I saw a mod that removed the tire tracks from the roads, might be interesting to see how the city looks without them! Keep it up, love the street layout ❤
*Repost from last vid* How about Fort John. A fort established in the 1600s for revolutionary war uses, most famous for taking down 8 british ships in a day, taken down somewhere in the 1800s due to lack of employment, and fires, and later bought by private investors, and rebuilt as a city, with some ruins. Great video by the way.
The revolutionary war occurred in the 1700s. Many of the forts used were built in the late 1600s and early to mid 1700s, but it is important to note that the war occurred in the 1700s.
My favorite city in the us is Boston and I’m so hyped about this part of the city. I’m from Mexico!
Pd: Boston is such a walkable and cyclist city, the times I’ve been there I rather use the blue bikes instead of the subway, cuz it’s faster and u get to enjoy the ride.
I think you need a little Transport HUB near by the Central Station for Busses and maybe in the future for Trams
After a stressful day I can watch this, along with a puff of a good pineapple kush, life is suddenly a little better.
I will have to admit though, your skills in design makes me green with envy. Having driven around in Boston myself, I am pleased to see how you apply the feel of the city. In real life, driving there is a challenge, and I don't think anyone but the most enthusiastic detailer could make a true city build like that.
Also, the way you pronounce the word marking, you sound kind of like you are truly from Boston!
Thanks, Tak
P.S. Lenge leve GASOLIN!
Most people think european streetlayouts just consists of curves when in reality it is just a bunch of chaotic roads that go zigzag (suddenly turning 5-30 degrees) at every intersection while there is still being order (In a sense of there is a big road every 2-8 blocks that is being used if you want to get from A to B really fast) and after driving on it for some time it leads to a even bigger road that just sweeps through the city
Absolutely stunning build, as always Infra! I enjoy your road building episodes so much!
That insane interchange you made last video still amazes me and makes me laugh in equal measures.
There are a lot of old monuments in the US that are in those weird intersection spaces. They are usually surrounded by cast iron fences with an old statue in the middle surrounded by flowers. I think this would work great in the empty awkward spaces. Massachusetts is also big on sailing so some small boats to fill the marina and dot around the map could add some detail.
leaving that little pond/water feature in the new city is a good choice, need somewhere like The Fens in Boston for the irish mob to dump bodies.
It was a lovely Sunday, but now it's splendid.
The minimum width of sidewalks is ridiculous, compared to old European city centers. You have it at 4 meters, but have you ever seen such a thing? Some Amsterdam side walks are less than 1 meter wide
It would be awesome if these vids have chapters so we can return to our favourite parts! Great vid as alwways
I think Easthaven County would be a prime spot for a major naval base. Maybe some inspiration from Norfolk, or Bremerton, or maybe even Victoria or Halifax.
I always are looking for old roads and routes, so in CS I try to think about roads that were there before railways or highways have been build. Resulting in roads that seem to be cut in two by rail or highway infrastructure. Or even overgrown disused pieces of road that was connected to a road on the other side of the new infrastructure.
I love your organic build! Love your videos.
For the modifications in West Point, I suggest an ajustment. In a lot of coastal cities in Europe (mainly France, Italy, Spain) that feature beaches or smaller non industrial harbours, the diagonal parking lots along side the coastal road are very often on the sea side. If you could adjust that for a little more realism it would be great.
Otherwise great video as always ;)
Mate, in my opinion that's the best episode in the cs2 so far. Love your content.
I really am looking forward to seeing the city come to life and how you use buildings in the odd spaces
Man, you are the best. This is easily becoming my favorite CS2 series. Kudos!
Can't wait to see how you are gonna build the city with this interesting road layout!
This is porto alegre. Purely and simply. Love it.
I think this is by far the coolest interchange I've ever seen in City skylines 2 even though it's not out on console just yet. But sadly I might have to upgrade my Xbox to get it once it comes out. But keep doing what you do. I love all the amazing ideas of the road layouts you made and the interchange. I might have to use this in my city on City skylines 1. I don't know how that will work but I'm sure I will make it work. Thank you for sharing with us. You're amazing content❤❤
you should make a custom rescue station on the small island near the farm island (helicopters, custom dock, etc)
If you're curious about european road layouts and all this, theres loads of interesting places! Minden is THE stereotypical german empire mid town, with ring-grid and a central station right across the river from the medieval centre.
Düsseldorf is a bit odd, especially first 4 districts, mixing 18th century grid style, imperial ring expansion and representative buildings, a few skyscrapers in somewhat illogical places and car-friendly 70's planning.
Karlsruhe has a radial grid, it's a planned city from around 1700.
Hildesheim never really stopped following early modern patterns, except for some large arterials that, like, cut through everything... but even the south city with a few midrises and lots of 50's buildings has an outline reminiscent of 1600.
Wroclaw is another odd one, you see the jumps in planning theory between early modern, imperial german, a bit of bauhaus and then polish socialism.
Netherlands have very unique grids but they love their grid. Lots of cul de sacs, meanders and complex blocs, look at Barendrecht, Ridderkerk or Arnhem-zuid
I highly respect the effort you put into your content, 1 or 2 mins into the video I was thinking I should comment about the Big Dig to get you to be inspired from it, only to find out you know about it yourself!!!
I’m absolutely biased because I’m from there, but Boston is my favorite city in the world. I’ve been around to dozens of cities but none capture the charm of my home. I think you absolutely do the layout justice and I can’t wait to see where this one goes!
thnx for the uploads, you make it look so easy
love you mate thanks for this wonderful surprise
WOOOO 🎉❤ this city is turning out beautiful 🤩
Damn, that opening shot was gorgeous 😍
As a New Englander, I can tell ya that Boston has wicked bad road layout.
Another amazing upload… keep em coming!
What an epic road infractructure you have built! 👍👍👍
I think we should name the new city “Dence” (pronounced like Dense). Reason being, it is a play on words, as the cities density will be very high, but also, the “C” in “Dence” gives it a European looking/sounding name.
My suggestion for the name and historical background of the city:
Name: Pequot
The Pequot were a Native American people from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and South-Eastern Massachusetts. The name is also an allusion to the fictional Nantucket whaling ship, The Pequod, from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, which set off from Nantucket, an island in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Also, Massachusetts has a long tradition of naming towns and cities after Native American names
Backstory: Whaling was a major industry in Massachusetts that grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Cities like New Bedford and Nantucket competed with each other as major global centers for whaling. New Bedford eventually dominated and even came to be known as the “city that lit the world” for the valuable whale oil used in candles and lamps. Because of the whaling industry, these small fishing towns grew to be very wealthy.
I think the size of Pequot would make sense in light of its past as a major whaling city. As whaling declined around the turn of the 20th century, Pequot could follow a similar trajectory to that of Boston, transitioning to industrial development and eventually a more services-based economy in the 21st century with financial, tech, pharmaceutical, etc.
This one’s good
In Boston builds are fused together, new building are built on top and surrounding older buildings ...
Excellent video, i love the road layout and the use of custom roads. However, and I know you mentioned it at the start of the video, i was hoping for a much bigger land reclamation. I think it would be needed not only for the industry on the other side of the highway like You’re planning but also for the downtown area, in order to have a nice transition between the main downtown and medium density suburbs (idk the correct term) without it feeling too cramped. I just feel like the island where the main capital of the region is should’t be smaller than that of the other, much smaller towns.
Still I love your work, You’re my favourite youtuber by far, already impatient for your next videos!
Yooo, the music you used for the time-lapse was an absolute banger at 1.75 pbs.
name ( Oak Lock ) or ( The Oak Lock )
Oak Lock/The Oak Lock was founded in the early 1800s on an oak-covered island. Though accessible by boat, train, and road, the city remains "locked" by its island setting. The name reflects both the dense oak forests and its unique, isolated charm. Today, Oak Lock thrives with a rich history and a distinct identity shaped by its beautiful, self-contained landscape.
i love how you everytime, without fail in any episode, take a whack at the USA. Even as you compliment boston for being old in american standards :D Makes you very friendly my dear northern neighbour
Great video once again infra
You need a road with an overpass that is just slightly too short for big trucks. A new Storrow Drive (famous for drivers not paying attention and getting stuck under the bridge.)
Good work!
Yeah, reclaim that land! Shop them who's boss! Greetings from the Netherlands.
The road parking is beautiful💫
Submerging the highway in the new city big dig style would be cool and fit the Boston theme
39:27 "...features like... a... stiff clips..." OK, added to my dictionary.
Idea !!!
why don't you create first cities skylines diamond interchange now we have road tool and mods, keep going❤
I pre-ordered CS2 but haven't really played it much yet. I think it's time now. Looks like the game has come along nicely. As I knew it would.
"Wahlberg" should be the name of course. Another great vid!
Nice, and don't forget to give some Road Builder love to the small fishing village where you first mentioned wanting to have some one lane with parking roads...
Name for the new place? Why not _Spalding_ or _New_ _Spalding_ since Boston is named for the Lincolnshire coastal town just along the coast from Spalding, which has the wonderfully named Spalding Tulips as their football team!
Cambridge is a very good city name
Some old style high-rise will look really good especially in the heart of downtown
There is a colonial Boston map on the mods page which shows just how different Boston was in the 1600s. I’m not sure if you knew going in, but the idea of adding land is perfectly consistent with the actual history of Boston which is today much , much larger than what was basically an island at the end of a causeway in the 1600s (Think Mont St Michel) which flooded during some high tides. Much of today’s Boston was under water or marshland at the time George Washington led the siege of the British who were trapped in Boston .
the John F. Kennedy Federal building is a building in boston which is copied almost exaclty in vanilla CS II as a high density office building, you should place that in the city
The only fitting name for this city would be "The Hub" short for "The Hub of the Universe" coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes which pays homage to the significant historical role Boston played in American history!
I would totally believe you if you told be there was a town in Mass called Thubuni (rhymes with Tympani). T'HubUni
@@drekfletch This is facts: Google it!
the name of the new city would be "Neu Bay" because, say, the Dutch/German explorers/settlers arrived in this group of islands first, and that town was formed when the people living there still spoke their own language, not English
i would like to see you try to make Cobblestone streets, custom invisible roads with surfaces on them
The city could be called New Rijeka. Rijeka is a city in Croatia and was the main port of the Habsburg Empire / Austria-Hungary. The backstory: when all the great powers started to colonize America, the Habsburg empire wanted in on it and sent an expedition to create their first settlement on the island you're building the city on. The expedition failed and the settlement was abandoned but stayed there long enough for the name New Rijeka to find itself on many maps. As maps are copied the name stuck and was mistakenly given to the island because they realized there was no city there. One or two Centuries later when a new city was built on the island it took the name of the ground it was standing on. New Rijeka.
could you let me know if you read the comment please?
It could be called "New Haven". "Haven" means "port" in Dutch (like "hafen" in German), and it's new, like New York or New Orleans. The original name might have been "Nieuwe Haven," which was anglicized to "New Haven" over time. They kept the "haven" out of tradition.
@@_Boni_ there’s already a New Haven ct
I know this is a New England based city but you should check out New York’s colonial layout, the Dutch built layout is actually kind of hidden.
Look up boston land reclamation. And see the potential of doing something like that when the city is big enough.
How about the island is named after a local French smuggler who assisted in the ARW - Hernes Robarde-Arquis?
The posh end could be named Arquis with the regular larger end Robarde's.
Those of us who appreciate the pun can chuckle without the name being weird to those who don't!
A great day to go to church and then go home and watch your videos while I eat a cheeseburger
thats what jesus would have done
I would love the name Nesolimnopolis, some european ancient greek fanatic in 1634, named the city so. It is „greek“ for „IslandLakeCity.“
Love seeing Easthaven county, but will the river view series continue?
Yes!
You should build a waterfront trolley down the waterfront road
whats your lumina settings if you dont mind me asking?
Roads galore 🤩
sooo far myy fav city
How about St. Botolph for the city’s name? It’s Boston’s original name before it was contracted.
I feel like theres a need for a clean coal plant right on the coast in East Haven.
YESS 2 MINUTES AGO WELCOME KING OF CS2!!!
Can we get the gamesave? I really would love to look at it in detail
52:52 - 53:00 you deleted quite a bit of parking there, but I'm not sure if it's just the visual spaces since cars remain parked.
Those roads with angled parking are cool, but would it make more sense to keep the parking on the same side that you'd have the buildings? (e.g. the shoreline road currently has parking on the shore side, instead of where the buildings will go.) Also +1 for the comment about angled parking on a one-way.
Great videos.... I'm new to City Skylines 2 so I'm picking up a lot of good tips watching these. One question though, How do you get the elevation height to show at the cursor when you are doing landscaping? I can't seem to figure that out...
Very good video.
Name the new area, Mystic, really nice high end area in Connecticut
Can you eventually set the theme of a new island to Winthrop? Its a small town on the other side of the airport from Boston. I only know about it because I met someone from there.
Sunday jost got better
Beautiful city! What theme do you use for grass, dirt, etc?
Don't worry. "counter balance" is perfectly acceptable (American) English. :)
You can name the city LAKE CITY or LAKE TOWN or BLACKPOOL or BLUEPOOL because of the lake😊
Roshen is good name related to old city in Neom at Saudi Arabia and vision 2030
Oh for node controller 😆
could you please show us your lumina setup and/or map theme?
So do we get save games via Patreon/some alternative way?
would love to walk around this place.
My GOD is Boston ACTUALLY like this!? This must be the real reason everyone hates the east coast! Forgot politics, it's the driving! This looks HELLISH!
Love the videos man!! Just had a question about a bug I have encountered while playing cities skylines 2: the yellow screen bug. Whenever I’m building roads or underground infrastructure, my screen turns yellow and I cannot see the game. I have to launch the game in dev mode to disable tunnel pass but then I cannot see contour lines and anything underground. Do you have any idea how to fix this without having to disable tunnel pass?
Is that a mod where you plop in angled parking and adding in the lanes etc
He says it’s his best…3 episodes later he demolishes it all, to make “improvements”😅
Hahahah, maybe just.. demolish a little bit? Just a bit :D
YEAY !!
