I eat Natto every morning with some rice. You gotta add a bit of mustard and soy sauce to it. It’s strange at first but you get used to it. If you get used to it, it tastes like roasted chestnut. But you have to stir it up aggressively to activate it. And it shouldn’t cost $12. The most I paid is $1.99 for a 3 pack at the Japanese store.

Good practical video. My homemade version is milder than commercial products. By controlling the fermentation time, I control the intensity. Also I eat it mixed with other food, as do traditional consumers in Japan. In my case it is broccoli sprouts and prepared mustard. Salt pickles are the best haha! You can add ground ginger, garlic, onions, soy sauce, fish sauce, red peppers, to your pickles to make them taste a bit more like kimchi. Seriously, natto doesn't really have that strong of a taste. It took me longer to get used to drinking black coffee, romaine lettuce, and eating grapefruit.

You get extra credit for pronouncing natto correctly.
I haven't tried natto for over 40 years. My mom eats it and my sister too. She likes it with mustard. Too bad for me because I now have a CAC score of 123. I now take K2 400 or 500 mcg per day. Unexpectedly I noticed, after about two months on K2, my blood pressure lowered to normal. Also my tooth sensitivities went away. Happy days.
I would stop at a Japanese, Korean or sometime an Asian market and pickup some frozen natto for my mom. It’s in little individual packets in the freezer section and probably more economical too.
This video should help in case you haven’t looked, and there’s others on TH-cam.
    th-cam.com/video/gvpdY844gX8/w-d-xo.html
I’ll take a follow up CAC test in about 6 more months to see which direction my calcification is going.

I lived in Japan back in the 90's for a while teaching English Conversation. I loved it. The first time I tried Natto I almost gag. It was horrible, but as time went on I learned to like it a lot. I liked it so much that I was eating it everyday.
When I came back to the states it's much harder to find it unless you go to a Asian store, and they might not even have it. Now Amazon sells it as well as other online sites.
The problem I have with these so-called test tube studies they do is that they don't look at everything about the participants. For example. The doctor says only comes to 2 percent decrease in heart disease. Did they see how active the participants were? Did they live a sedentary life style? What other foods did they eat? You can't base a study off of just one thing such as Natto. I've lost faith in the medical community because of this. Medical community just doesn't always look at the whole picture.

You have to eat natto the way Japanese do to enjoy them. We eat this for breakfast with a little soy sauce, Japanese mustard (karashi) and chopped green onions over a newly cooked rice. I also like it without rice with all the toppings I mentioned above. And of course, a simple bowl of miso soup with it is really nice. Oh, and the secret is using chopsticks to avoid slimy strands going to your face. 😊

Interesting video. I’ve been visiting Japan for over a decade. I have to say, I had the locals in hysterics when they witnessed my first encounter with natto. Seeing a foreigner wolf down a portion of natto with spring onion, mustard and soya sauce - without coming up for breath - was obviously not a common occurrence.
As someone who consumes a lot of fermented foods - kefir, sauerkraut, cheese and red wine - it just didn’t seem unnatural to enjoy natto.
$12 for a tiny jar of natto? As we say here in Scotland: No danger! Recently, the three packs you’d usually find in Asian supermarkets have become more difficult to come by, and are significantly more expensive than pre brexit, pandemic and war with Russia.
In Japan, a three pack costs as little as 60 yen - I’m guessing around 20 or 25 cents. In Scotland, the same pack sets you back around $6
Simple solution: make your own! Most of us own some form of Instant pot. One pound of soya beans makes around 20 generous portions of natto. Just be sure to avoid the nasty GMO variety so commonly available in the States.
There are plenty of tutorials out there, but the process couldn’t be simpler: Wash, soak overnight, cook, ferment, refrigerate, and enjoy!

I have tried natto with sauerkraut, kimchi and finally, I now eat it with 1/2 can of black beans. It's easy with black beans, I cut the frozen natto into 9 pieces, then eat each piece with some black beans, the soy beans and black beans have the same texture, and both soft, so just a couple chews and then an easy swallow, mostly just taste the black beans. Don't stir it up like the Japanese, that's just masochistic. It's cheap, and has the most k2 of any food (emu oil has more, but not so available, and is that a food?). It also has Nattokinase, the enzyme which dissolves fibrin (plaque in arteries is 8% lipids, 16% calcium and 65% fibrin) which is only in natto. So, K2 reduces the calcium, and Nattokinase reduces the fibrin, at least that's the theory.

Dude home made natto is pretty cheap & not that hard to make. Just get canned beans drain & heat them then put them in a loose container (prevent insects from getting in but allows oxygen to get in) for a bunch of days to ferment the beans with natural bacteria (although using the bacteria you get online could lower the risk of spoilage). I make natto using chickpeas, blackbeans, and soybeans.

  • @firefly618

I actually make natto at home, because it's cheaper and tastes better than the packaged type. It's quite easy, you only need dried soybeans and a good starter (the spores of the right bacterium.)

Interesting video, Natto did not look as bad as I thought, I will have to try it. One note, a decrease from 6.9% to 4.9% is a 29% reduction, very large percentage in my book. Also, very interesting point about the fact that Natto has many other ingredients than just K2 that could be a factor. I never really thought of it that way, more reason to try Natto. Thanks.

    • @whomadethatsaltysoup
      @whomadethatsaltysoup ปีที่แล้ว

Personally, I’d agree with the good doctor regarding the percentage. Unlike pharmaceutical sales literature, he states clearly that he is referring to absolute percentage. You, on the other hand, are referring to relative percentage. So, a difference of 1 percent and 2 percent is, well, 1 percent. Yes, it’s an improvement, but what about the other 98 percent?
A good, or should I say bad example of this is where the sales of statins are based on a 50 percent decrease in the chances of dying of CHD as a result of this ‘miracle’ drug. Of course, the actual data shows an improvement of only one percent in absolute terms - up from 2 to 3 percent.
Only when it comes to adverse reactions, does the rather dishonest sales pitch revert to absolute percentages. Just saying.
As for fermented foods. Well, we have been consuming them for thousands of years, I don’t know of any studies that have shown kefir, sauerkraut, or natto to cause T2D, muscle or joint damage. There is certainly no evidence of The Japanese dropping dead in their prime - far from it, as I’ve noticed on my many visits.

thank you. i will try natto the first opportunity. in the mean time, i understand the natto powder, made from the dried beans is just as healthy, if not more so (from the concentration).....and somewhat more palatable. i think you're exactly right; the whole food has many more benefits than just the isolated k2 (from a pill, which i currently take, but plan to phase in the natto powder). again thanks.

Don't need a Cardiologist to tell us about Natto, he admited he new NOTHING about it prior to reading about it. Same thing you can do.

it's really not bad. it's just a very different texture than what we're used to eat. i just dump it on top of my chilli lol it helps blend in, as long as there are lots of spices

    Natto is delicious.
    I could eat it everyday.
I tried making some at home, and it stunk out my kitchen. Now I just buy it from the local Korean grocery store.
It's yummy with Korean kimchi too.

What people need to understand is yes Nattokinase does help but you need to drop your bad habits as well. Stop being sedentary, stop eating animal products, stop smoking and stop being so stressed out

I made som natto two weeks ago. I had bought some small pack about two years ago to try out. The one pack I had left was still viable and so made some from that. The taste is very much like tempeh, another fermented soy food. After a while you don't even notice the dirty sock smell or the taste. It is actually rather bland. I eat about 30 grams a day as a snack.

  • @miscellaneouscell

I tired it for the first time today. It came in a styrofoam package with some mustard and soy sauce. I mixed it all up and served it on top of rice. I don’t think it’s meant to have plain. Lol. I like slimey foods.

Natto is a weird traditional food, not good for kids but they give it anyway ( natto can make taste disorder, promote bleeding, increase heart disease risk… and other problems).
That’s why I don’t give to my children natto ( they are half Japanese)

Natto is always eaten with mustard and dashi sauce, it could be the mustard or dashi that's causing the decrease in cases, did the study concider that?

The younger someone is the greater the gag reflex is for foods that taste off, a natural response. As we get older we learn to accept varying tastes, a learned response.

So is there anything that has good fibrinigen break down?or something that is similar to a thrombolytic drug? That's natural?

    • @CardioGauge
      @CardioGauge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi ecom. No. fibrinogen break down is something a person needs if they are having an active stroke or heart attack. When that is happening, they need immediate, reliable effect. While nattokinase is a fibrinolytic, it is not reliable enough to take in the setting of a heart attack or stroke. Best bet for heart attack and stroke is to get to the hospital pronto.
In terms of long term supplementation with a goal of reducing fibrinogen, I don't know of any trials which have proven that anything in this area reduces chance of heart attack or stroke.

I tried to get myself to eat natto years ago, I ate it for almost two weeks straight trying to get used to it on the 13th day I could just not get it down. ( same gag reaction as the young man had! 🤣) I found the pills. Now I am attempting to try it again, medicines from real food is so much better then a pill. I am now going to attempt to make my own. With my instant pot and the recipes I’ve found on utube. ( years ago I even bought the bacteria starter from Amazon, but did not make it) you need to stir it up before you eat it to activate the strands. ❤️ thanks for your video. ( my husband took a video of my reaction to it when I first tried it. I eat weird things to so I figured I could get used to it. Wish me luck this time around. I am eating it for my bone health.

Suggest that you find a legitimate sushi restaurant (many are not operated by Japanese) and try natto. I recommend it with squid, roe, and quail egg. Absent that, find an Asian food store and buy the product imported from Japan. Yes, it is stringy but fresh natto should have a nice nutty flavor.
