    intel 14th gen naming convention of breaking it into meteor lake (new process) and raptor lake refresh (updated old process) really reminds me of what they did to their 10th gen cpus (they broke the 10th gen into ice lake (new process) and comet lake (updated old process) cpu's which was really weird), if i should use the 10th gen as a frame work then maybe 15th gen would be a hit as they optimize the new process

    Solid review, Matthew! Especially testing the AI features! Also, THANK YOU, for showing a clockspeed run test, really useful. Did the tests hover around ~28W for most of them? I'm not really impressed with the performance, although I do appreciate we now have light intel laptops that are efficient. Also, think these would be great alternative for lightweight content creating laptops on Win especially with Intels Quicksync for media.

    Im going to give the benefit of doubt to the chip not being optimized. Adobe products crash often no matter what system you are running. they shouldn't be charging for subscriptions in my opinion. M series is still king though. Intel had a head start, they should be way further ahead than apple.

  • @davidspagnolo4870
    @davidspagnolo4870 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    I disagree that the apple m-series is easy to understand. What do pro, max, and ultra even mean? These chips can have differences in core counts that aren't reflected in their names either. Are you buying the 11-core or 12-core m3 pro? 14 or 18 gpu cores? There's nothing in the naming scheme that would tell you what it is you're actually buying. Then the machines that they put them in make it even more confusing. Air, Pro, Pro Pro, or Pro Max? How many cores, how much ram.? ..it's not a good naming scheme at all.

    • @nileredsexperiment834
      @nileredsexperiment834 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The regular M3 is for the avg consumer, the Pro is ofc, for professional individuals who need a little more power, the Max is for the absolute power user,
      and lastly, the Ultra is the best of the best, smth that a huge professional studio would need.

    • @davidspagnolo4870
      @davidspagnolo4870 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@nileredsexperiment834 Max means maximum. Maximum means highest or furthest extent. Why would anyone assume that ultra is better than the thing that literally means "the best"?
      That's not even getting into the variations within each "strata". The pro, max, and ultra have different sub configurations that the naming scheme doesn't take into account at all.

      Are you serious 😂😂😂😂😂

    • @tjl2836
      @tjl2836 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nileredsexperiment834 Apple's naming scheme is more consumer friendly and dumbed down, but it gives very little information. Intel and AMD's naming is very technical which is more efficient in professional situations like IT or manufacturing. If you've ever had to search for parts, a well-informed naming scheme will save you the time and patience otherwise spent digging through datasheets for every part. While it is definitely overkill for like 99% consumers nowadays and just makes advertising harder, it leaves no room for error like ultra vs max or cpu/gpu core counts.
      Basically both naming styles have their pros and cons, I'm just giving perspective on why a stupid hieroglyphic could be better.

    The hate for these 14th gen laptop cpu's is criminally over blown, the majority of people on windows laptops are using 2-3+ year old laptops and if you're upgrading from one of those the difference is stellar, its a transition from how intel traditionaly does cpu's and it could take a couple nore generations before it pays off. That being said if you have any greivences with the new lineup you should still be vocal about it, they've been comfortably behind on effeciency for way to long, plus they're billionaires so fuck em lol.

      For a laptop with 3K 120Hz HDR600 Nit OLED Touch display? 7 hours is absolutely groundbreaking. Trust me, my current laptop with the same OLED screen gets 4.5 hours of battery life on a last generation processor.
      This same chip in a laptop with 14" 1920x1080 60Hz SDR300 Nit IPS Non-Touch display would easily last 12 hours. And I believe ASUS does sell that configuration.

    People get confused after looking at benchmarks about what's happening under the hood. For the example: export times are faster in m3 vs intel but everyone forgets that export task happens between cpu cache (intel) and ram (third party) and blaming intel solely for this sounds unfair to me when they don't have control over third party peripherals.
    Lower performance iGPUs are placed in SOC to reduce die area and cost which gives users an opportunity to spend extra on dedicated graphics. Smaller die area is generally sought out by motherboard manufacturers for developing smaller form factor (again for cost reduction). More room available for NPU.
    Other challenges include support for legacy hardware and OS (windows and linux distros) which makes optimization bit more complex and hurts performance vs apple with less overhead. Point to apple as they work closely with software developers for better optimization and that's the benefit of smaller overhead.
    Power consumption is intel's greatest challenge which the is direct result of CISC based architecture.
    Battery life although is affected by power it still is something that's controlled by laptop manufacturers.

    Sure Intel will give you more battery life. But the AMD chip actually lets you play Cyberpunk or Assassin's Creed as long as you put it on a fan-driven cooling pad.
    Otherwise it'll get quite toasty and might shut itself down at some point.
    And battery life is great anyway. I like this Zenbook way better than my Asus gaming laptop, which has to go in repair for the second time in the first year!
    I would not buy another Asus gaming laptop, but a Zenbook, I would. The giant horror on the new Zenbooks is Windows 11! It'll make you insane and there are no drivers for windows 10, exept possibly in Asus' french office.

    I hate AI. Companies abuse the hell out of the word. It's meaningless. When the fans on my graphics card from five years ago claimed to have AI control, I thought it was cute. It would ramp up when the temps rose and ramp down when they dropped. It's a fan curve with a glorified name. Now they are literally throwing the word AI into everything and it annoys the hell out of me. 20yrs ago when you manipulated a photo digitally, it was called photoshopping. The same thing done today with an easier user interface and simpler controls is somehow called "AI" now and it somehow also has the power to destroy the world. I honestly think the night light in my hallway that turns on when it senses motion is some truly advanced AI about to murder me when I'm not looking. Must have an NPU inside.

    Great video and machine.
    I wouldn't buy it on the promise that Intel would fix the software, I'd go AMD or wait until they fix it.
    The P+E cores is nice in theory and can work on Macs + Linux, but Windows carry a lot of legacy which makes fixing scheduling very hard for a lot of cases.
    Plus Intel had a year to fix the Arc drivers and although they done a lot, there's still a lot to do.
