Ok! Not tried so much with mIne iMator, however how about starting the surface as a "thin" line and then scale and move it in X when covering the body just to minimize the pre hit render artifacts on the back ground?
You can use it on a flat non-schematic map by NOT setting the render depth lower than 0, just raise everything else's depth to be above the object intended to make others disappear.

Another way to do this which is very, VERY tedious and high effort, but it would yield a higher-quality effect, is to have your character built out of colored cubes and rip them apart to create the effect. Also, I released a particle effect on the MI forums that looks pretty good for this sort of effect if you're interested in checking it out.

To make it more awesome, I recommend that the surface should be affected by wind so it's cooler.
I tried that, but due to the harshness of the edge it looked weird imo.
