Many of the world’s leading scientists do not believe we have free will. A consensus has not been reached but studies have shown that our brain makes decisions several seconds before we’re conscious of what has been chosen for us.
I have battled mental illness since I was a teenager. I am bi-polar, neurodivergent and have episodes of profound and debilitating depression. How can people with mental illness overcome their emotions when their brain functions abnormally? I can’t control the imbalance of chemicals and misfiring signals. This requires medication which saves lives. If I followed your advice and stopped taking medication, I’d sink into an intolerable and hellish state of depression that would likely result in hospitalization.
I recently lost a friend to suicide and I think it’s important to understand that we are not always in control. External forces often control us and that is simply the nature of reality and we are powerless to change this.
You are very wise for an 18 year old and your logic is sound. However, I don’t think you’re taking into consideration the fundamental nature of reality which is subjective, not objective.

There are many things that went through my mind after reading your comment, and if I were to be honest, I didn't know and still don't know how to respond to you, but I will tell you my honest opinion. Please don't be offended...
Thinking that you are not responsible for your thoughts is such a weakness that I don't understand... Believing that is even worse... you still choose what to believe, you choose to do something or not. The reaction of your brain is trained and programmed by your upbringing, beliefs, and so much more.
I know that I do what I do because the actions I take are what I believe... The gut is the second consciousness that you have, your body as a whole is one as well. So, your scientists only focused on your brain. But having a response to something that came into your life, reality, or environment has more variables than just your brain... As I said, your health, mental state, beliefs, body, and gut are huge factors as well...
So please, just for your own sake, stop believing that your thoughts, actions, and decisions aren't yours. You will be like a feather in the wind that gets pushed from left to right without purpose, landing only in the dark and bad places of this world because you can't control your impulses in your brain.
Secondly, "I am bi-polar, neurodivergent, and have episodes of profound and debilitating depression." This really sounds cool, but diagnosing yourself with these kinds of things will not help you as well... How do you know that you are all that? If you can't even take responsibility for what you think? Again, for your own sake, stop diagnosing yourself with things that don't help you. Stop living in a self-centered world... Do you really think that everyone else is normal? Do you think I don't battle with abnormal reactions of my brain? I do, but I know how to control it. You don't; even worse, you think that you are not in control. And when reading my response, there's a really high chance that you even think that you are the victim and there's nothing that can change you. Again, STOP THINKING LIKE THIS!
"This requires medication which saves lives." Now to this interesting part... define saving, please...
Because what I see is prolonging the time of death, not saving a person. Taking away the responsibility of your own actions with a magic pill isn't something you should be aspiring to.
Now to "If I followed your advice and stopped taking medication, I’d sink into an intolerable and hellish state of depression[...]". I find this interesting because yes, I believe you 100%. If I were you, knowing what you know, living like you do, and believing what you believe, I would be hospitalized as well...
I want to ask you: Do you know your purpose in life?
Have you ever achieved something that can make you feel proud?
Do you have a goal in life?
      Are you fit?
Do you have a healthy body?
Are you happy about something that you can do tomorrow?
      Do you solve problems?
If you don't have answers to my questions, it's normal to feel such a way. No wonder that you are depressed... If you are not needed by anyone-not even yourself-you will feel like that!!!!
Now again, this is not an attack, but I know you will feel offended. I was too.
But this is the reality. Our society tells young and older men that they have this disease that they cannot fix. Everyone in this world is perfect except themselves. You cannot change it, and that's the reason you fall into something like this. I'm very, very sorry for the loss of your friend, and I don't want more and more men to feel like this, but the problem is no one cares about us men.
They just give us medications and take away our life’s purpose, and that's what I hate!
I want men to take control of their lives because you can. We can change and do the things we say we will.
We are problem solvers. You need to get used to feeling like shit. I'm very sorry to tell you this, but you are a man, and as a man, you feel like shit because you get a problem, and you have to figure out how to solve it.
You need to get good at solving problems. By solving them, you are a high-value man, not by earning a lot of money, sleeping with a lot of women, or having a six-pack.
It's by solving problems, creating a family, and raising children.
So please stop saying something like this: "External forces often control us, and that is simply the nature of reality, and we are powerless to change this."
This is absolutely the worst thing in the world you can say as a man to anyone!!!

If you are interested as to why I'm so sure of what I wrote, give me a response!
Because I have dealt with a lot of shit and I thought the same way as you, which made me suicidal.
Or I at least thought so....
You can change things and live a good life.
The very first best thing you can do is to KNOW you can change anything in your life.

@ I’m merely saying that many scientists have reached a consensus that free will doesn’t exist. It hasn’t been proven and is still a topic of debate. It could exist and I hope it does. I’ve suffered from extremely episodes of mental illness in my life and I can’t just turn off a switch in my brain that balances the chemicals and stops misfiring signals. You cannot control that.
