Around 7:30, Rui asked something about the gender of the words (i think?). How normal is it for portuguese people to not know whether it’s male or female and to mix them up. Even if they know the word well but in the hurry of speech, mix them up?
I think it's because they are talking about a specific topic. It's not common to know grapes names. In this case uva (F) would mean the adjective/type of grape to be feminine too, morangueira. But Rui doubted himself, because 'morangueira' sounds like it comes from the word for strawberry, 'morango', which is masculine.
Great question, I (Joel) have wondered this myself so I asked Rui what happened here. He had misheard the word earlier, which is why he wasn’t confident whether it ended in o or a. In general (and surprising to us non-romance-language speakers), native Portuguese generally don’t mix up gender. Somehow their brains just lock in the correct one and it stays with them! Of course that’s Rui’s experience, maybe other natives will have a different opinion.
