Well. Exams in 8 days. I know for a fact I will fail. The word problems are unnecessarily difficult. I've thought about not turning up at all, maybe then I'd save myself the trouble. Seriously, screw mathematics. Used to love the subject with all my heart. I used to think it was an explanation to everything in the universe. Now? Now it turned into a mess of problem-solving and women buying x meters of cloth and friends dividing up their money and 40% juice mixed with water and workers working together on projects they were obviously supposed to finish on their own. Now I despise it. I thank you nevertheless. Your efforts are noble, and you certainly helped clear up a fair few topics. Unfortunately, sometimes there are faults with ourselves. Sometimes we simply lack the brainpower.
Teamblubz Not very well at all, actually. Real life doesn't have a happy ending. Engineering school for me. Could be better, but it's alright nevertheless.
I used to watch Mr Hegarty in 2014 when I was doing my GCSE's and he formed the way way I looked at maths and carried out problems. I got all A stars in GCSE and A levels. Last year I successfully completed my second Diploma in Cambridge University. I just want to say a big thanks to Mr Hegarty and I couldn't of done it without his video. I still make the same mistakes of not reading the questions properly...lol. Feb 2024.
Got my maths exams first one on Thursday and your videos are really helping ! I haven't been in school to learn everything due to issues but these are definitely helping me to achieve the best I can and go to college
Just discovered your channel last week, and just to say THANK YOU. I'm going into fifth year and I'm terrible at maths and somehow I'm in the higher maths class... But these videos will save my ass for exams and also in class cause we just learn something the next week it's a different topic but with these I can watch them over and over until you understand them! So thank you for using your time to help students - really appreciate it!
Thank you indeed. Hopefully you can find help at hegartymaths at a-level too! It's not much harder its just you need to be super disciplined and organised and do a lot more work. If you let things to and don't work hard it can become extremely difficult very quickly. So my advice for a-level is make sure you are an expert with algebra, surds, indices and QUADRATICs in advance and do everything teacher asks. Best of luck! You never know you might get 118.
xelygon Hiya - thanks loads!!! Any chance you could spare 30 secs to vote for HegartyMaths in this Richard Branson competition which ends in a few days. Would mean a lot to me and HegartyMaths. www.virginmediabusiness.co.uk/pitch-to-rich/start-up/hegartymaths/ Thanks Mr H
HI there. Stories like this just make me so glad I take the time to make the videos. I really appreciate your feedback and it is really rewarding to think I may have helped in some small way. I wish you all the best of luck for tomorrow and well done! Out of interest is there any chance of the A*? Keep working hard up till Friday to get that great grade secured. Please share the channel with family, friends and school as I want to help others like you. Very best wishes. Mr Hegarty
trust me that's so true and the thing is that they ain't even helping when they do that and it's stressing me out so bad and idk what to do :"""""((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
I was on 2 c's when i found your videos. I asked to resit both exams but was denied the chance for unknown reasons (they thought i would just fail again) and so i sent them an email and argued with the head teacher saying how it wasn't up to them. I was allowed to resit both exams and brought those 2 C's up to 2 High A's. Now i have unit 3 in a couple days and i am very confident that i can get an A overall. As all i need is a minimum B to get an A overall. This is all because of you. THANKS!!!
Last example opened up a whole new world for me, I never realised that the (2x - 1) ÷ 2 - (x - 5) ÷ 3 were fractions!! So I never knew how to do them when the common denominator wasnt the same, once you said they were fractions my math life flashed before my eyes and now I see the light!! So easy! Why did no one point out the obvious for me!?
I have a question, on example 8 if there was an addition sign instead of subtraction in-between the brackets would you then also have to somehow multiply the right hand side of the equation? I was just thinking because it would seem that the left side would just outweigh the right side if multiplied when getting the LCM :/
I cross multiplied but I got the right answer: 4x+7/6 = 5/4 ... cross multiply 4(4x+7) = 5x6 ... expand the bracket 16x+28 = 30 ... now it's just a linear equation (solve to find x) 16x = 30-28 16x = 2 x = 2/16 ... now simplify it (they both go into 2) x = 1/8 Ta da... DONE! Hope I helped & God bless x

Incredibly helpful. Thank you. I am currently doing my foundation year electrical and electronic engineering and found that i needed brush up on my maths as i am a mature student who had sadly had forgotten the basics.
Example 7 was really confusing to me, you put (6x-3)-(2x-10). If you write it like that it looks like it should be -13. It took me a while to figure out it was -2(x-5). If you expand the brackets and take them away it's simpler because you know that -2 x -5 is +10. So writing 6x-3-2x+10 made it simpler for me. It was a small problem in an otherwise excellent set of videos! Thanks for posting!
nice one, I understood everything perfectly from this video however I am still praying that I get full marks tomorrow on exam day though I have my concepts clear, thx 2 u
At 12:27 -3 - -10... is it right to say when a negative subtracts another negative it automatically becomes a positive?🤔 I'm still processing this without a calculator!

I'm not from England but the thing we're learning for that topic is similar to example 8. Most times the denominator is the one containing the x - or + etc etc. and it's so confusing!! We didn't even start from anything similar to the previous examples. And we also have to use the quadratic formula/factoring to simplify and find its zeroes. Is that a different topic? I'm having a hard time and I can't really find the right tutorial. We're also not allowed to use calculators which makes this even more confusing.
I'm sure if you keep going over these videos as well as working hard in your maths lessons you'll be okay! I'm doing exams this year as well and I'm pretty worried about maths but I'm sure we'll do fine,good luck 😊

Hello mate, so sorry for the late reply. I asked the same thing! But you can cross multiply and get the same answer! 4 (4X+7) =16x +28 6x5=30. 16x+28=30 You want 16x on its own (make it the subject) So -28 to get it on the right side. 16x=30-28=2 16x=2 Now simplify 2=16 Divide both sides by 2 X=1/8

Would it not be easier to multiply all 3 terms by the LCM(2,3,4) which is 12. So 6(2x-1)-4(x-5) = 15. Solving gives 8x + 1 and x = 1/8
Yep multiply by 12 to take care of both fractions
Yes sir, that's the easier way
Studying for the equivalency testing. Really helpful. Best explanation that I had had yet. Thanks.

This has really helped me for the new GCSE (2016) but how would you do these questions if these were in a problem solving?
Thanks very much, am a teacher who needs no more explanations on related challenges.
I have a question, on example 8 if there was an addition sign instead of subtraction in-between the brackets would you then also have to somehow multiply the right hand side of the equation? Yes look at the website. It is in higher algebra. Cheers. Mr H
amazing explaining better then my maths teacher at school
Thank you very much very usefull
(Also first video i actually understood)
I cross multiplied but I got the right answer:
4x+7/6 = 5/4 ... cross multiply
4(4x+7) = 5x6 ... expand the bracket
16x+28 = 30 ... now it's just a linear equation (solve to find x)
16x = 30-28
16x = 2
x = 2/16 ... now simplify it (they both go into 2)
x = 1/8
Ta da... DONE! Hope I helped & God bless x
Thank you! I have an exam today and this will help so much!

X===1/8

How did it go
What grade would these sorts of questions be
Here's another reason for why 1/4x is equal to x/4. 1/4x (times 4) = 1x, we write 1x as just x.
which software did you use to do the writing?
On the last question why can't we cross multiply as at 12:45 we have a FRACTION=FRACTION? I cross multiplied and got it wrong through... so why is it that we don't cross multiply? thanks for any replies :)
Hello mate, so sorry for the late reply. I asked the same thing! But you can cross multiply and get the same answer! 4 (4X+7) =16x +28
6x5=30.
16x+28=30
You want 16x on its own (make it the subject)
So -28 to get it on the right side. 16x=30-28=2
16x=2
Now simplify
2=16
Divide both sides by 2
X=1/8
Example #8 lcm =12 and multiply sides for 12 to eliminate fraction. yours are fine but I a bit longer and the answers comes the same!
THANKS A BUNCH!!!
