Not everyone watching is "trained" to know the difference so once again, he was very likely doing it for the audience. That and it helps to add to the suspense for everyone who doesn't question every last little thing they see.

I would run the overburden over a conveyor belt. There install a Metal detector with a air pressure unit, that blows out the rocks automatically when a detection is made. Like in Recycling facilities. It is easy to install and you dont have to check overburden by Hand.
