I have not watched Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee. I imagine it was a bit like this. Steyn is the symbol of a bygone era and the last of the great fast bowlers who terrorized batsmen.

Shane Bond could've but he didn't last long enough for us to see. Mitchell Johnson did, but only towards the end of his career.

Both are 10kph quicker on average and both are better rounded, as in they both can do a bit of what Lillee and Thompson did, as well as a bit of what McGrath, Anderson, Hadlee etc did in smaller doses. There's actually several phenomena that leads to there not being as many such bowlers. Batsmen seem to have better reflexes and bowlers probably don't see the point in express pace anymore since it's too injurious (also 120-130kph medium pacers have also all but disappeared from the game as well). But to say that there can't be other fast bowlers like Lilee, Thompson etc is unfair. The game ebbs and flows over the decades. Test cricket has been dying for 70 years now and will continue to die for the next 200.
Seems to be the famous newlands test of 2011 which witnessed 26 wickets falling on day 2, and the seamers of south africa creating carnage on australia. Wow Steyn was an absolute show stopper across conditions. An absolute gem as a bowler. That south african test team from 2008 to 2014 was at the very height of their powers. Well even statistically, he's a monster..439 test wickets, avg 22.95 at a strike rate of 42.3 and imporantly his stats hold up in all conditions including Asia..Yes he won't be playing until his 60s like Jimmy Anderson but while he was playing, he was comfortably the best fast bowler...Anderson has ridiculous longevity but is not in the highest tier of bowlers..That includes like likes of Mcgrath,Akram,Malcolm Marshall,Ambrose and Steyn

The actual accuracy of the speed gun aside, bowling 148km/h at sea level is quite something. That’s in the 150’s at altitude. Factor in the ridiculous amount of movement he was getting and that’s not something you want to face too many times in your cricket career. For a shortish fast bowler, he generated incredible pace. Blessed with them fast twitch muscle fibres!
Styen is the greatest bowler because having average of 22.95 and 439 wickets in test and 25.95 and 196 wickets in one day that too when cricket become one sided batsman friendly with rules favoring batsman. This is great achievement for any bowler in this era.
SA has produced some of the greatest fast bowlers that cricket has ever seen. In the lights of Donald, Shultz, De Villers, Morkel to name a few. And in my books Steyn is on the the top 3 from any list of top fast bowlers.

The change in ball's path/trajectory before the bounce is called SWING, after the bounce it's not swing, it's known as CUT. Coming from a proper pacer of his era.
AT the bounce is cut. E.g. an offcutter is a fast bowler delivering with offspin type of hand motion and moving it left to right off the deck. If the ball moves in the air AFTER the bounce it is still swing.
basically after ptiching , its a seam moment. And if the ball is swinged , it means the trajectory or the direction of movement of the delivery has been changed , and after pitching , it will move in that same direction only , and get deviated from its original path , which could be seen against Brad haddin in this video
