    80% of retirees net worth increases…too many fear running out of money. Spend it while you can! I started my retirement at 60 hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, a 3500 km adventure in 2022. Last year my wife and I walked across Spain on the Camino Frances. This year, hiking in the Canadian Rockies and Italy. I spent my career as a family doctor watching too many patients let life pass them by. Time is our most precious asset. Don’t let it go to waste!

    • @planesandbikes7353
      @planesandbikes7353 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      Yes. This is right up my alley! Just retired at 57, but not sure if the wife will let me go disappear on a thru hike for 4 months. We hiked Mt Blanc last year and always do many weekend overnight hikes but I feel I need to go get on a trail for a month or more to get properly fit and lean.

      Awesome. Hubby and I are in Spain and Portugal this winter.. and will consider completing part of the Camino trail .. Did you complete it in one shot?!

      @@planesandbikes7353 Good luck! The AT is an awesome experience. Preparation and fitness pre trail is important. I had only done a few overnight hikes prior to starting. I did however walk 20-30kms with a full pack and climbed 100 flights of stairs with the pack regularly in the months leading up to the start. Getting your spouse on board can be a bigger challenge!!!

    • @doconawalk9367
      @doconawalk9367 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@brendalabranche365 The Camino Frances is a commitment and we did walk the entire 800kms in one go. There are lots of shorter Camino options and it is a wonderful experience! Good luck!

      @@doconawalk9367 Long distance hikes are not only a great adventure but they don’t cost much and keep you fit and healthy as long as possible. So you get the best of both worlds, a long healthy retirement and plenty of money to enjoy it. If you can share the experiences with your wife you are doubly lucky.

    I think it's great you are going to splurge a little, but on the other hand you might find greater gratification in helping those who cannot help themselves... We have a Veterans home nearby where disabled Vets live, and they love visitors and someone to play a game of chess or cards with. Also, traveling through Mexico we have been able to help some of the people migrating from other countries who are looking for work or place to live permanently. There are many areas to help out... Children's hospitals always need toys, and Nursing homes have residents that could use someone to walk with in the yard to increase their health and stability as well. Enjoyment and satisfaction come in many forms... We have clubs through our library where creatives can share poetry, writings and Art. So much to do!

      I would give Egypt a miss, although the ancient monuments are impressive, the experience as a tourist is hellish. The hawkers will not leave you alone, and there are an infinite number of them. They are relentless, especially around the main tourist attractions. Not a relaxing place to visit, plus it's dirty, polluted, loud, and the traffic is awful.

    I have a VW Eos convertible and love it. A real beauty. I am heading to the Mediterranean this upcoming summer ☀️ and then a cruise for 10 days. After my heart surgery I have decided to spend a little. My financial planner included a large holiday every three years. Retired, single, no debts, and a DB pension . I worked hard for 32 years as a high school English teacher and want to enjoy myself before I perish.

    So at 67 I bought a guitar and took lessons, I still play, have 3 acoustic, 1 electric plus a Greek bouzouki, good for the mind and hand coordination. We bought kayaks and get out on the ocean which allows us to see lots of wildlife, Orcas, Bald Eagles, seals, etc. When I turned 70 in June I joined a yoga fitness group and even get a senior discount on my monthly fee. This year I plan to get back into marathon running as I took a year off, thinking of targeting the Athens Marathon in a few years. Oh yes and we bought a second vehicle (compact SUV) as we live in rural area. All good advice.

    You are right about letting go and spending money while you can still enjoy it. What struck me while watching this video was all the purchases we need to make because things keep wearing out. When we were young, things were made to last. We had a toaster from the 50s that was still working decades later. I bought a blender in the 1970s that lasted over 30 years. Large appliances could be expected to run for 20 years or more. Same for TVs, and if any of these broke down, we’d have them repaired. Today, things are made cheaply and aren’t intended to last more than a few years, leading to rampant consumerism and contributing to pollution when we toss them. It’s sad….

    Hey I'm 70 and the Mrs. is about to turn 68. We're right in the prime Go-Go years , so, this week I've played hockey in my over 65 league. Been to the gym twice, and taken a few walks. Need to get fit to be able to walk everyday on my two week hiking tour in Italy (through SD Tours) coming up in April. Yesterday I put the deposit down on the two week cruise around South America's Cape Horn for early 2026. Then today I put a deposit down on a new 2025 Toyota. (no Mustang Convertible for me but DAMN I'm envious, however, they don't make Corolla Convertibles). When we kick the bucket, the kids are going get a little less than they hoped but that's okay. They already gave us permission to spend our own savings.
    Obviously we're doing all this just to keep up with you two but its good to have idols to live up to...

    Very true I retired at 63 felt as good as I did ever. Now 76 and still feel really well. I never smoked or drank alcohol, and never drug use. My doctor says I’m reaping the benefits from that now. But from age 70 till now I’ve had 2 total knee replacements, prostate cancer, a pin stroke last year and another surgery. I AM doing very well now , feel great and feel lucky. YES do things while you can!!!! After 70 to 75. You will not feel as good. Was just thinking the other day of the services I can now afford to purchase which make life more convenient and enjoyable. I have a pedicure once a month, have a fantastic whole house clean once a month , have a handy man who looks after all sorts of household problems and this year for the first time i hired a guy who put up Christmas lights. For $150 he supplied the lights and a timer, set them all up and will come in January to take them down - money well spent in my opinion.

    I retired at age 53 and am now in my early 60s. Many people resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if you don't have to. I considered my life to be in phases. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." After I retired, I left the nation and now reside in Latin America. I was able to enjoy my new surroundings and escape from all the bad things that were going on in America. I haven't yet encountered anyone who laments their retirement.

      Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

I thought that you better get it now or you may never get one. It proved out. I have so enjoyed driving it while I was still working and the Km's are there to show it. It is so true that time and aliments will maybe reduce your abilities to enjoy things like that. Driving it makes me smile and I feel 11 years younger each time. Get the 5.0 litre you deserve it. All great advice! One must always "take a pulse" of their life in retirement, which includes the foundation of keeping oneself healthy in order to have the energy to enjoy life. With that accomplished and ongoing, everything else can follow. I've now been retired almost 3 years, and have come to realize that there is more available to me if I make goals and "swing big". Toys and little joys make life more interesting, comfortable, and enjoyable. Anyone who says "I'm not sure what I'll do in retirement" either has no creativity or has not yet come to realize that they are now the ones responsible for ALL their choices. The new found freedom can be overwhelming for some. I embrace every minute of it.

    One thing about a blood pressure monitor, it doesn't test for hypertension. That's where one's arteries are narrowing like holding your thumb over the end of a hose, more volume is forced thru a smaller tube. You can be registering normal blood pressure but be a ticking time bomb as well. An ECG is a better way to test if someone has that silent killer hypertension.

    • @wrongwayconway
      @wrongwayconway วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      An ECG evaluates heart rhythms which can discover if the heart is enlarged which would be a sign of hypertension. If you're in a hospital bed they hook you up to a monitor that registers your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. All that will give a good picture of your current state. However a blood pressure monitor does one thing: measures your blood pressure and it tells you whether you're high (hypertension), low (hypotension), or just right.

    Another great video. All fantastic suggestions, most of which I already follow. Although I'm not retiring for 5 years or so, I've been laser focused on prolonging my lifespan and my health-span since age 50. Now I'm 55 and in the best health of my life. All we have to work with is health, time and money (if we're lucky) in that order of importance, so it makes sense to protect our health to enable the most fulfilling use of the other two. I'm a lifelong car enthusiast, so I recently purchased a Mazda Miata convertible 6-speed back in June and I had a blast driving it all summer. It'll be nice to already own a fun sports car when I retire, I'm even considering doing some amateur racing, but not until I take some competition driving lessons. I am so ready for retirement!

The problem is that this car is perfect after 25 years of design but ......the noise off the road is 80 DB so it has damaged ears and if you like music or want to wear ear plugs or sound defining then it's NOT your new toy.

    It’s becoming increasingly obvious that your channel is geared towards the extremely affluent senior, not the average Canadian pensioner. Most people can’t risk spending their savings on frivolities such as fancy cars, expensive trips, or wasteful consumerism buying throwaway home goods without a care for the environmental impact they leave for their grandchildren to clean up. I posit that most of us have to worry about the quality of care we’ll receive in our final years and must hold onto our money as long as possible.

    I wouldn't count on the exceptional sharemerket returns of last 1-2 years being repeeated every retirement year to come. At some stage will be a bear market in which retirees will have to still spend on all these great spending ideas as net worth remains static or decreases. aside from spent amount.
    Everyone feels buoyant and clever in a strong market. Asset allocation and spending buckets things to consider for all market returns.

    Norm & Tina, do you find you are more relaxed about spending your retirement savings money now than when you first retired or even just more relaxed than even 5 or 6 years ago? I think that happens with many retirees, after a time they realize that "running out of money" really isn't an issue, but the secret is not to wait until it's too late and perhaps you don't have either the energy or the health to pursue those things you had dreamed of doing. Have fun with that Mustang!

    Driving around in a convertible wouldn't bring me any joy but imagining the wind in Norm's hair did bring mirth. We see the same asset accumulation issue after 10 years of retirement and even after spending like drunken monkeys the past 3 months on a major remodel including kitchen, we've got a greater net worth today than we did before starting the project. The one caution I would bring up is to be very aware of sequence of returns risk and to manage it early in retirement if need be. We were lucky to retire at a low risk time and didn't need to.
