Wacaday (summer 1991) - FULL EPISODE

  • The gold mines of South Africa are the subject of this, the penultimate episode of Wacaday from the 1991 summer holidays. (So that makes the original bradcast date either late August or early September of that year, I suppose, but I can't be more specific than that - anyone?) Timmy Mallett is aided by Jacqueline Sharpe of Oakham and Dominic (from somewhere I can't make out - possibly Horsham, as suggested in the comments) throughout the usual fun and mayhem.
    One of the disappointments of this series is that it's after Mallett's Mallett was "sanitised" - that is, Timmy strikes the device besides the contestants rather than their heads. I remember the media pressure before that change was made after reports of children up and down the country whacking each other; I also remember being incredulous. We kids aren't that stupid, thought young me. Then not long after I went to visit my cousins. "Did you see Wacaday this morning?" asked I.
    "We're not allowed to watch it anymore," came the dismayed reply.
    "Whyever not?" I pressed.
    "Because I smashed [younger brother] over the head with a piece of wood playing Mallett's Mallett."
    Sigh.
    In defence of children in general, it's got to be said that some of the stuff that viewers made and sent in was really impressive. Are kids still just as talented today? I'd like to think so, but I wonder whether the modern-day equivalents of Wacaday (if there's such a thing) inspire their creativity as much as back then. I suspect not.
    Incidentally, halfway through there are some vintage ads for you to enjoy: Monster in My Pocket, Monster Munch, Frosties, Care Bears, and Ribena, to be precise. And now I fancy a packet of Monster Munch, which I haven't had in well over a decade.
    Huge thanks must go to Neil for providing this recording. You can view his fantastic Sooty-related channel here: / thesootyshoworg - highly recommended.
    (Please remember that this is an off-air video recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. Also, apologies for the one-legged sound. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

    Timmy made a surprise appearance at my 40th birthday party a few months ago and everybody loved him. He played Mallett’s Mallet with the guests and had my sisters dancing to Itsy Bitsy. He’s a really cool guy and despite how bonkers he comes across, he’s actually very intelligent. Hasn’t changed at all since Wacaday!

    After just the first five minutes, you can quite clearly understand why kids of the 90's LOVED this show....including me of course. Budgies flying around the studio, crazy clothes, silly laughs, shaky cameras, sounds and movements from the crew, kid contestants being introduced in the weirdest manner and Timmy being "UTTERLY, UTTERLY" brilliant! ...ahhh...this made my summer holidays as a kid.

    @VideotapeFTW- it was amazing! One of the best days of my life! I wrote a letter to Timmy, asking to be on his show. Paid for a stamp out of my pocket money and sent the letter off along with hundreds of drawings for Magic! My Mum knew nothing about it until the 'show' called, said they were from Wacaday and could they speak to me! I burst into tears and remember my Mum saying "Don't cry, they won't let you on the show!!" :0) We were put up in a posh hotel (I think it was the Hilton) overnight and had to learn the song the day we travelled down (it was sent by cassette tape so I listened to it on my walkman on the train!). I met Mike from TV-AM, Keep Fit Lizzy (do you remember her!! :0), Tommy Docherty (Scottish Footy manager) and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (now know as Mark Wahlberg!!). Thanks once again for sharing this on You Tube, the fact it's here forever makes me truly truly happy!! P.s My kids were amazed that a) I was once a child and b) I was on TV! I'm their new hero!!! x

    It was indeed the same holidays, too. WacAfrica was the theme for six weeks. That's utterly brilliant in itself, spending six weeks teaching kids in Woking about Kenya and South Africa. The next year, the last one, went all over the world. With the Africa bits being year-old footage, of course.

      I did read somewhere that Chris and the show's producer went in and were able to argue and get paid for the full 40 weeks despite the axe... so it makes you wonder how much TV-am saved overall with the axing! The show itself was basically BSB's Power Up under a different name... so they'd been prematurely axed twice in the space of a few months, both times due to reasons nothing to do with the show itself! The TV-am Archive channel put up a few clips surrounding the launch of TV Mayhem, and it's suprising how much effort they put into the promotion only to axe it literally as soon as the franchise had gone.

    @Jacqueline Guthrie - That just sounds like the most amazing experience. I always wondered how I could get on Wacaday; it never really occurred to me just to write in and ask! Plus getting to meet Marky Mark, Tommy Docherty, Mike from TV-am, *and* Keep Fit Lizzy... I'm not sure young me would have been able to handle it. Especially that last one. ;-)

    This must have been the last series of Wacaday before TV-am knew they were losing their franchise... Didn't they start putting up repeats from the late 80s as weekends not long after that?

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think Wacaday itself continued right to the end of TV-am - maybe they repeated certain pre-recorded segments, like they did during the (numerous) strikes, but I'm pretty sure Timmy wasn't taken off the air. I can't remember for certain, to be honest.

    • @2001JamesTV
      @2001JamesTV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@VideotapeFTW Yeah, they put out old episodes at weekends during 1992, but still had new episodes during the school holidays- possibly the only new, original childrens programming during that final year? I think the likes of Top Banana and Dappledown Farm were only repeats (though the latter came back, both repeats and new episodes, on Channel 5 a few years later! Possibly the only time TV-am content was repeated outside of TV-am itself)
      I guess it saved them money, as they didn't have to commission anything new or pay to for an import for that slot, and a lot of kids probably wouldn't care (or even realise) it was 5 years old! Feels a bit of a disservice to viewers though the way they went on that cutting spree as soon as the franchise loss was announced... it's not as if they couldn't afford to keep making what they did before, they just went stingy.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suppose they had nothing to gain from spending any money on their shows, so they didn't - just fulfil their contract to the barest possible minimum. The speed at which they reached that point, though, is borderline hilarious.

    • @2001JamesTV
      @2001JamesTV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@VideotapeFTW Would barely matter if they didn't fulfil the contract... how much could the ITC really do when they'd already lost the franchise? At best probably a fine that would likely barely touch the sides when they were still raking in money while slashing costs. Take them off air early... but replace them with what, as GMTV wouldn't have been ready.
      I guess at least they didn't pull a Southern-esque on air tantrum and broadcast bitter speeches and songs. Or storm off air months early like TWW did.
      Of course franchisees that did win have been just as guilty at cutting things as soon as they can get away with it. Granada started winding down the Liverpool news operation almost as soon as they won the franchise for example. Admittedly not a requirement of the licence, but still something they did to look good for the regulator in the face of criticism for being too Manchester centric leading up to renewal.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@2001JamesTV I'm pretty sure Mike Morris had some strong but well-chosen words during TV-am's final broadcast. And didn't GMTV's franchise fee end up being reduced to below what TV-am bid? (I may be getting mixed up with Thames vs Carlton.)

  • @97channel
    @97channel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Mallett's Mallet thing... I came to live with the "sanitised" version, because Wacaday was still so utterly brilliant. But it wasn't the same, let's be honest. I remember how disappointing it was when they first introduced the gizmo version. Timmy was interviewed by Anne Diamond on TV Weekly and she asked why they'd altered the Mallett's Mallet game, as may children were writing in and complaining about it. She asked directly if it was a result from the pressure of copycat incidents involving people being maimed with heavy objects, but he denied it had any correlation and that they just decided to revamp it purely to keep it fresh. She pushed him on it and he promised it was the truth, pointing out that they still hit people on the head during other segments of the show. I would have doubted his honesty, but he does have a point there. I actually believe him because of that.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, and surprising. I suppose it could be true, but then again, if they were getting that many letters from children, why not change back? They could have done if it was indeed just a revamp without any outside pressure. Perhaps it was a pre-emptive move they decided to make before anyone whacked their little sibling a fraction *too* hard...?

    • @97channel
      @97channel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Come to think of it, they altered it right at the moment TV-am were applying for franchise renewal. Maybe trying to impress the ITC that their kids' programming wasn't encouraging violence? Anyhow, sanity was restored post Wacaday, good old fashioned head bashing in Timmy's various, sporadic Mallett's Mallet revivals which pop up here and there every now and then.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know what? That makes perfect sense - a good old franchise renewal always gets broadcasters voluntarily cleaning up their act. Mystery solved, I reckon. :-)

      @@Mitchcraft. Made matters worse, that machine was always clocking up the wrong score. Two numbers would whizz round at once, or none at all. And he didn't notice, because he was standing behind it. They got letters complaining about the wrong kid being declared the winner, time after time, so they started to make a joke of it by having people dressed as the Gremlins in the machine.
