Wonderful movie. You wouldn't instinctively think it'd be possible to muster such tension out of a "mutant baby murderer" plot-line. A very unique subject, brilliantly executed.
They made this movie in the wake of the thalidomide scandal -- a drug prescribed to pregnant women which ended up causing tragic birth defects . . . babies born with stumps instead of hands and feet, that sort of thing. Also, with Abortion having recently been legalized then, the movie touched more than a few nerves. I still remember the ending: a report than another mutant baby had been born somewhere else in the country. Rick Baker's creature make-ups were really good, one of his first breakout jobs, right before the KING KONG remake.
John Ryan was GREAT in this. Not as great as Runaway Train but great. And the movie was good fun. Ps - on the topic of Runaway Train...I'm seeing that movie get more props in the last 6months than I have since it came out out together. Good. I don't remember who won the Oscar but it should have been Voigt.
I was a kid seeing this in the mid 70's and it fascinated me .. pure classic!
Great review. Those TV spots were unreal back in the70s
One of the bloodiest PG rated films ever released!
Wonderful movie.

Y'all chose the wrong trailer. The 1977 trailer was scary to a six-year-old boy. Ryan gave a nuanced, tragic performance. You feel bad for the baby.
Ryan was brilliant.
They made 2 sequels to this and a remake.
Pink milk. It's not strawberry Quik.
